Homecoming The Amazing Spider-Man 3 General Discussion - Part 8

All this discussion of S6 should all be moot now, since Spidey is likely going to end up in the MCU and S6 is highly unlikely to be made now. Sony would be absolute fools not to deal.

The fact that those Sinister Six pitches had Sony execs frothing at the mouth (initially) is extremely disheartening.

Pretty sure the Sony execs are the ones that came up with that dumbass idea in the first place. Some of them (like Arad and Pascal) think that they're writers. The problem is they can't write for ****. Arad in particular dictates much of this crap. Who made SM3 an overdone mess with Venom added? Arad. Who wanted villain spin off movies? Arad. Even the good Spider-Man movies are quality films in spite of Arad, not because of him. I still remember listening to the Spider-Man 2 commentary track years ago and thinking Avi Arad was a moron. He suggested that it was no big deal killing off Ock because they could always bring in "Docky Ocky" in the future. The writers and directors don't seem to have much of a say in Spider-Man movies (before the hack, the ASM composer actually spoke out against the producers of the film).

Maybe we have to sit through a disastrous S6 movie before major changes happen for the Spider-Man franchise.

I think because of the discussions between Sony & Marvel, we don't have to worry about the S6 movie.

Nothing beats his "Batman came and went" comment. Then TDK happened.

I detest Arad.

Arad did the commentary for Spider-Man 2?! Looks like I will never listen to it.

Arad's done multiple commentary tracks. Listening to them is how I got a head start on knowing he was a dumbass before the rest of the world caught on.

EDIT: IIRC he said something about his family trying to order hot dogs from a fake shopfront during the filming of The Amazing Spider-Man on that commentary, so I think he just has the Stupid gene.

Reminds me of that movie The Stupids

I hope Avi eats some fake food from a film set.

Lets not forget that Avi also suggested a love triangle between Peter-MJ-Doc Ock

There's nothing - zero, nada, zilch - in that email remotely approaching stupidity. It's a filmmaker (a proven one and a smart one) being excited for his movie, throwing around ideas. Good ones, in fact.

- We're doing something different - it's time to celebrate the bad guys for once.
-We're inspired by the classic team/mission of movies: Dirty Dozen, Magnificent Seven, Guns of Navarone. We want that spirit, that SWAGGER.
- If the Spider-Man franchiseis the Beatles, then we're the Sex Pistols.

It's becoming more and more of a long shot, but if this still happens and Goddard remains on board, so do I.

One condition of the deal is Avi gets to play Uncle Ben. He's going give the best, "With great power comes great responsibility" speech ever! Also it's rumored he's going to be Venom, not EB or FT.

 totally agree with you

(However, I don't trust what sony could wind up doing to Goddard's vision)

MJ will probably get jealous, especially since she's the only non powered one.

The problem I have with the Goddard pitch is it doesn't sound like he is taking the material seriously. What are the most respected Marvel movies? Cap 2 and Iron Man. And what are the most ridiculed Marvel movies? Thor 2 and IM2. And what are the tone of those movies respectively? It's like no one at Sony wants to elevate the material.

I see what you mean, but the way I see it, it was a private e-mail. He was excited about his project.

I get that they're not the coolest studio at the mo. But one can either approach this as "a new movie by Sony" or "a new movie by Drew Goddard". I choose the latter in a heartbeat. Among all the directors currently hired to do comic book stuff, I'd rank him easily in the top five. Yup.

And not for nothing... but if you swapped him as director for any other movie at the moment (say... Suicide Squad), not for a single second would the fans of those properties refrain from counting Goddard as a huge plus. But because he's working for Sony, suddenly he and his potential/talent are worth squat? Bullcrap. Extremely narrow-minded POV.

Anyways, Merry Christmas, guys.

The tone was good in ASM1 but the but the movie was undermined by the weak villain, clumsy origin and uneven pacing.

One thing I noticed is that the camera was a lot shakier in the first films when he was swinging. It felt more stable in the second.

Most definitely. The ASM1 swinging was done with a much narrower field of view, it seems, probably resulting in shakiness.

Isn't there anyone at Sony that wants to tell a nuanced and sophisticated story?
They have their moments with some of their smaller films, but when it comes to their major franchises...

**** no.

If Nolan came up with the idea of a 100 foot Sandman I'd say it was crap. The idea isn't crap because it's Goddard, it's crap because it's crap.
