The issue with this incarnation is that the character out of the suit is too different from the chartacter in the suit and the audience can't bridge the gap and see the personality from inside the suit, the wise cracking smart ass guy, because he just doesn't seem to have any sense of humour as Peter Parker.
Well, that was kind of theway he was in his high school/early college years. And it's wierd, because most of the complaints I've seen is that Peter was TOO much like Spider-man in the ASM movies.

And to second what spiderman 2 said, I really don't get all the hate for the Lizard design. For all the complaints about not using classic looks, you'd think they'd get some appreciation for pulling the Ditko design right off the page:

Aside from have a shorter snout, The Lizard doesn't look anything like that in the movie.

I really wish they didn't make him talk... It was so cartoony... A giant lizard killing people because he's a giant lizard would have been way better than the "turn NYC into lizards" crap they gave away in the trailers.

Okay, I can respect them for wanting to go with a classic Lizard design instead of the Iguana one everyone is familiar with, but they made him look so weird. I don't know if it was the cgi or the voice but he was pretty weird. However, The design they were going with for Spider-Man 4 wasn't much better. How hard is it to make a Lizard that looks like the Todd Mcfarlane version? They didn't even give Lizard his lab coat! Well they did... for a minute or two.

“Something you can do in a comic that you can’t do in a film is that you can have thought bubbles. So it was really important for us to be able to express the emotion and the humanity within that Lizard. And I wanted Rhys’s performance to come through with that and that was an important part of creating and designing the villain in this case.”

That's why.

Yeah that makes sense but he wasn't really intimidating like The Lizard should be.

The Lizard was a bad choice for a live action villain in that case. With so many other GOOD Spider-Man villains, they could have went with someone without having to make such a dramatic change to their appearance.

The Lizard in ASM wasn't a great villain so it didn't help the look was drastically changed on top of that. Just another poor decision by Sony.

Ah yes, but don't forget the toys! More villains=more toys! Would a kid rather play with a figure of some old guy with wings, or a black, monstrous, Spider-Man like creature? The kids want their Venom toothbrushes and their Venom candy! Don't forget their Venom shirts, sneakers, and hats! Oh, and you can't possibly forget the pop cans and chip bags with Venom on them!

All of which goes to Marvel because Sony sold them all the merchandise rights.

You know what I hate about the idea of scrapping the ongoing franchise?
What about the fedora guy visiting Connors in the cell? And the resurface of some of the Lizard scales?
And what about Spider-Man's love interest past Gwen Stacy?
And I also hate that we won't see more of Norman Osborn, based on the deleted scene.

I'm interested in what we might not have, I'd like to see it.

well just look at the whole uncle bens killer subplot that seem to have got completely scrapped in TASM2 while they actually continued it in TASM2 video game instead

so there is a chance sony would been to busy watching other franchises for inspiration rather then making an effort on their own

there is 2 ways they could have done the lizard and both have been done in comics and animated form and thats either giant killer mindless beast (wolfman) or to do a sorta half intelligent man, half wild beast (dr jekyll) type villain

there is no right or wrong answer because the lizard has been done both ways in past

because one is a comic book drawn cover, the basic idea with what they did in TASM is pretty similar looking

I really do hope we get ASM 3 with Garfield in the lead. It's not too late to save this franchise.

Even if Sony decided not to deal with Marvel, Garfield is already out by all accounts.

I never read anything about that being confirmed. I understand marvel doesn't want him because of the association to the previous films.

There were supposedly emails leaked that said Garfield offended top brass at Sony Japan by no-showing at some event where he was supposed to meet up with them. This had a few different sources as well. I can't say it's a fact as I am not in that circle, but it looks very likely.

I played the game, not much of a fan.
And I lost interest in the killer with the star tattoo.

I actually dug Lizard's design.
Ditto.

Sony and Raimi have admitted why the reboot happened. Sony didn't think the Vulture could carry a film on his own and insisted the script be altered. Raimi on the heels of SM3's poor reception was hoping to make SM4 his redemption film and set the franchise back on course- even hiring the SM2 writers. However after 4 or 5 drafts he was still not happy with the story, this lead to delays in production and several bumps of the release date. Finally Raimi told Sony he needed an extra year- pushing Spider-Man back to 2012. Sony refused causing Raimi to quit, and the cast walking with him. Given Spider-Man was their biggest franchise they had backup script for a reboot, which they began active development on upon the departure of Raimi. In Sony's eyes Spider-Man 3 was a success, this is why they repeated the same marketing strategy for Amazing 2, and why they asked Raimi to come back. It had nothing to do with the poor reception and more about Raimi/Maguire's refusal to work in the same conditions that fostered SM3.

While yeah but if they felt like Vulture couldn't carry a movie on its own that means they where not trusting raimi though plus it was still going to have harry has goblin so its not like it was just going to be Vulture and having what happened with sm 4 agains means they where not trusting him again because if they had there wouldn't have been so many draft or they would have been ok with giving him an extra year to work on the script. If they will wanted to they could have done sm4 and give raimi extra time or they could have done a sm4 but with out raimi or something instead of a reboot. I think they felt like they couldn't make a good movie with raimi any more other wise why not give him an extra year or stop interfering again?

This only depends on what road they decide to go on.

If sony keeps sm I think that is the best thing to do because I think if you do asm3 with out Garfield has most people like him you are going to make people even more agest you. If they reboot again I think having a 3erd guy play sm and another reboot in a pretty short time is going to hurt them even more then just doing asm3 with Garfield.

It would be great if we could get asm3 that surprises people like XMEN first class did has people thought that movie was going to suck after xmen 3 and wolverine origins and wolverine and then we could get asm4 that is like xmen dofp has right now asm3 if it gets made is a lot like xmen franchise was going in to xmen first class. I hope we can get a really good asm3 with Garfield and an amazing asm4 with Garfield has it would be great if he could get 2 really good/great sm movies with him and he desevers to play sm for has long has possible has he is just amazing at the part.
