Ok, I know that this is the general discussion for future Spider-Man films.
but, I finally convinced myself to watch TASM 2, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it, since this is now the more active thread.
I..........actually liked it. Given everything I read and heard about it, and given how I didn't really care for TASM, I had pretty low expectations about TASM2.
But, surprisingly, I liked it better than I thought I would. I certainly didn't hate it, so that's a positive.......lol.
I think, overall, the TASM films had some great ideas under the hood - but poor execution of those ideas. as well as inconsistent tone. Between the 1st and 2nd films, it felt like the movies didn't quite know which direction to take.
And I'm still not sold on Garfield as Peter. I just didn't care much for this version of Peter Parker ( though he was less unlikable in TASM 2 ). Outside of his relationship with Gwen, I just couldn't connect with him. I never bought him as a nerdy science geek.
In costume, as Spidey, however, he was on point. and TASM 2 was on point in that regard. The way he wisecracked, interacted with the public, and the way he moved and fought all felt very much like the Spider-Man from the comics. I especially liked how Spidey was a symbol of hope and how he went out of his way to save individuals from harm. Batman vs Superman needs to take some cues from TASM 2 when it comes to showing Superman interacting with the public.
The other area where TASM 2 shined was the relationship between Peter and Gwen - which made the ending even more tragic and poignant.
And I actually liked this version of Harry/Green Goblin as well as Electro.
Rhino, otoh, well...................
So, overall, TASM 2 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
but, I'm eager for Marvel to get the rights back ( or for Sony and Marvel to work out some kind deal ) and for Marvel to take back the reigns on their flagship character and give us a new reboot.
hopefully, the new series of films will be in line with the Spectacular tv show and/or the Ultimate Comics, where it follows a younger cast in HS.
make Peter, MJ, Gwen, and Harry the 4 principal characters. and center the films on the relationships and friendships amongst those 4, and how Peter being Spider-Man ultimately affects their relationship - for good and for bad.
