The Amazing Spider-Man: The Game - Part 4

I picked this game up the other day. After hearing so many good things about the return of freeroam in New York City, and the Web Rush, well I was sold. Then I picked up my copy and played it.

What a major let down. Almost everything about this game has disappointed me. I don't mind the voice cast, the story and graphics, but so far nothing else, for me, is good.

The combat is bland and uninteresting. The stealth elements feel....not so much stealth, just standard combat.

And the major disappointment for me was Web swinging. What a complete and utter waste of a detailed city. At no point did the webs hit any building to swing from. I felt as if Beenox rushed this game again to release much like their spider-man game lat year.

And web rush was a joke. An interesting idea, but felt tacked on and pushed as a major game feature for the web head.

I'm not even going bother with the web rush because you've obviously either never even played the game or have no idea what you're doing when you play it. But just because your web shoots up instead of a little bit to the right or left which you wouldn't be able to see anyways; even though the swinging has a good feel to it, and a good sense of momentum, it sucks? That is dumb

Sorry to say, but I didnt enjoy this game. My own opinion. I didn't enjoy web rush. I hated the swinging, as it seemed like we went back to the first Movie Game.

I've been playing a lot of Spider-Man 2 on Xbox and having webs actually attach to buildings makes a big difference. Adds a whole new sense of challenge to te game. You had to work your way around the city by using webs and making sure you had buildings to fire at.

This game seems to think we can't navigate via that method and decided to take a massive step back and have webs attach to nothing. Not something I enjoy. Not something others enjoyed if I remember back to posts from last year.

And yeah I've played the game. Reilly1984 is my gamertag on Xbox. Add me and you'll see I've played it. Web rush is boring and made being Spider-Man an easy task. It like they didn't want to give us a challenge during gameplay and gave us web rush which makes almost any indoor level boringto navigate.

Sorry everyone else disagrees with me but this is not the Spider-Man game I've been waiting for.

I wont argue ur other points as I can understand where u are coming from but ur just wrong on web rush. I mean there isn't much else to say. If you want to go back to a system that made it difficult to do the moves that Spidey does without a seconds thought then by all means, head back to SM3. Web rush is the first system allowing us to move like the title character. Go from the ground, to the wall to the cieling and drop down behind a guard before he ever had a chance to turn around. THAT'S Spider-Man. This system allows the user to leap to the cieling, wall crawl and then leap back down, all with out getting disoriented like in past SM titles.

You can play without using the web rush, try doing that

Either I'm really used to the system in SM3 and don't feel the difficulty plus not recalling it, or never faced it
The system in that game is easy

As much as I'm disappointed that webs often attach to nothing, I have to say it's the most fun web-swinging I've ever experienced in any Spider-Man game. I love swinging past buildings, only to tap the web-rush, to quickly change direction, run along a wall, jump over antennas and then resume with my normal web-swinging. And I'm playing in the Black Movie suit. It just looks badass in this game. But I hope we'll get more red and blue variations. I can't believe that there are like 5 black suits in the game. There's even a black variant of the new Movie suit. What the hell?

Am I the only one who plays all mini missions and side missions before starting a main campaign mission? Sure makes the story take some time :P

The story is too interesting, so I mostly skip all of the stuff. Makes the story less immersive IMO, when I take my time to stop every mugging, while Gwen's life is at stake.

What you're neglecting to realize is that the web shooting 'alittle to the right or left' would completely alter your swinging trajectory, not just the appearance of the webs. As it is now, Spider-man is swinging from an invisible ceiling. If webs attatched to buildings, it's not like everything would look exactly the same except with webs going to the side of the screen, Spidey would swing in ways that are impossible in this game (such as side ways).

To the people complaining about webrush, did you realize that you can target a second object before reaching the first object?
You can repeat this infinitely and bounce down the street faster than the cars, moving seamlessly from cars to streetlights to walls. I ask because I don't understand how you can not like the feature if you have seen it used properly in this fashion.
Since I was a kid, while in a car I would often look out the window and imagine Spider-Man keeping up with the car by flinging himself between poles and vehicles in exactly this fashion. The webrush allows you for the first time to move with the speed and accuracy of spider-man in exactly the way I would imagine, It's literally like a dream come true.
And indoors, for the first time I am able to bounce down a long corridor in mere seconds moving from wall to ceiling, faster than I possibly could on foot, just as I'd see hime do on the cartoon. I can easily get to any part of a room quickly and inconspicuously, and thanks to the camera and the 'back to the wall' feature I can bounce around a room, dodging bullets and shooting webs while never losing sight of the enemies.

The webrush feature makes the game, if you don't like it... then we are definitely looking for different things in a Spider-man game. Now, it could still be improved. One thing I would suggest is removing the web animation when jumping short distance. Too often I would see spidey shoot web at something within jumping distance, or even within arms reach (air vent covers). Cut out all the unnecessary webs, and make them sound better too. Reducing the range that you can target might help too. It'd make it seem realer, and prevent you from accidentally pulling yourself 80 feet away from your destination.
This feature definitely helped me get past the swinging on clouds, which I do find slightly disappointing.

I just got the game, I love the free-roam web-slinging it brings back the good old memories of Spider-Man 2 which IMO is still the best Spider-Man game ever released. The boss battles are basically the same as Spider-Man 3 and the story is very similar to Web Of Shadows with the whole virus infecting the city. The stealth and combat is so copying Arkham Asylum/Arkham City.

Btw did anyone notice that the voice of Spidey sounds like the voice of Donatello from The animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003 series) ?

"I pick up on that where their was a turtle joke reference made by Spidey in the sewer mission"

I keep seeing comments about the combat and people saying that it's too easy. And most of those people are also complaining about the lack of realism with the web swinging. But shouldn't the combat be easy?? I mean, if we're talking realism, at least a realism for the ol' Webhead, the combat should be easy...right?? I can understand that anyone would want a good challenge during combat but at the same time if you want to feel like Spider-man, whooping ass on a group of thugs is as Spider-man as it gets. There's no way that any human thug/enemy should give Spidey a problem, even a group of 10 armed with bats and knives would be a real issue for him. He's much too fast, strong, agile/acrobatic and Spidey sensed out. In Arkham though the combat should be more of a challenge to pull off because of the fact that Batman is human. Don't get me wrong, Bats is one hell of a tough SOB, but even with all his training, he's still bound by the limitations of whatever a human can do. So...taking down a 10 person group of bat and knife wielding thugs is feasible, it's still gonna take the goddamn Batman a bit of an effort. I guess I am thankful that it's not to difficult for Spidey to take foes out because of his abilities...he should and you should feel like a bad ass in those scenarios. I would probably be PO'd if it was a pain-in-the-ass challenge to take out a group of thugs and I certainly wouldn't feel like Spidey. Turn the difficulty level up to Superhero and it provides just the right amount of a challenge.

Not its not. At least not compared to this game. Its impossible to do the stuff that i mentioned in this game and have it work the way you want it too. That game was just too spazzy.

I usually leave most of those until after the main game, but with the earliest I'm likely to see the movie being this Sunday I might just do that. I'm skipping scenes as much as possible and I don't really want to leave the game lying around for about a week (though I supposed I could play Skyrim, I've still to complete a couple of guild questlines).

Also, when you play as Stan Lee which gives you the option of Free Roam as well as the comic collecting challenge, does it affect the side missions/petty crimes available in the main game? I swung around for a bit and came under attack by one of those flying robots and took it out. Would that affect what's available in the main game as Spidey?

I couldn't agree with you more. And that's my whole point. Spider-Man 2 shows us that having our webs attach to buildings is a massiv difference and adds its own challenge to gameplay. Having webs fire up and sticking to god knows what (my guess are birds) makes this games attempt at Freeroam a joke, for me.

Last night I spent another hour web swing Freeroam to see if I was crazy about my earlier comments. I wasn't. It was boring and to me, to me, this city felt like a Hollywood version, so in other words, it felt like a Los Angeles backlot version of New York City.

And while I'm at it, what's with the small buildings. Examples, the Empire State building and Chrysler Building. This game just pains me.

I think a lot of people's problem with the webswinging is that they went into this game with Spider-Man 2 on their minds. The swinging isn't as horrible as some people make it out to be, with all the video that was shown previously, if the you hated the mechanic then, why do you own the game now? I honestly think it doesn't matter where his webs are attaching to. One thing about Beenox, they do look at fan response, so maybe in the next game, the webs will attach to any and all surfaces.

If I think Ultimate Spider-Man style of swinging, will that help?

Nah what helps is treating the game as its own separate entity and not associating it with the previous freeroam Spider-Man games.

Maybe they could have both kinds of web-swing in the next game, so each one becomes and option in the menu.

They did something like that in Uncharted 3, but with the aim system. Some fans complained about it, so they released a patch with Uncharted 2's aim system and it became and option. I immediately changed to U2's aim.

I actually enjoy the stealth components MORE than Arkham City. It feels more satisfyingly spidey to me. Slowly sliding down on a web, tapping on a dudes shoulder then webbing him to the ceiling. I like the freedom of wallcrawling anywhere instead of stealthing from certain grapple points.

Also, I totally dont get the complaints about the combat being like Arkham City. For like the last 2 years, or at least since before Shattered Dimensions, I remember people saying in the Spidey game forums 'I would love the combat to be like Arkham City but more acrobatic'. Now we've got that but it's a bad thing? I don't get it.

Well, they're most likely not the same people. I've wanted an Arkham-like combat style for ages and now I'm satisfied they've delivered. I don't think it's even all that similar, the finishing moves give it it's own identity, very fitting of Spider-man.

I also prefer the stealth in this game over Arkham. Wall crawling is better than gargoyle hopping. Wish I wasn't forced to drag every guy to the ceiling though, and I would've benefited from the ability to crouch or peek around corners.

Best Spidey game for me due to it's combined strengths, but it still hasn't replaced Spider-man 2 in the webswinging department imo. I don't have a ps2 so I have to chuck in SM3 when ever I feel like proper webswinging. Here's hoping for the next game.

Something else I'd like to see return is the webstrike from WOS, the one that let you bounce over an enemy and then target a second enemy. All you need is a limit on the number you can chain together. 2-3 tops. It was ridiculous in WOS when you were required to webstrike 30 people in a row.

Yea im scratching my head as well. This is the combat system iv always wanted for Spidey. Sure it could use a little polish, but damn its fun and looks good to boot.

I love after a room clearing brawl, i pan the camera around spidey to see everyone either webbed to the wall, ground or ceiling. It just looks great.
