It had loads of heart, scenes between Peter and aunt may "you are my boy", the beginning with peters parents, a lot of the stuff with gwen

Yes, there were definitely emotional scenes.

The Parker's "death" in the opening was way more emotional than I'd expected - I loved that.

But I just didn't feel any heart.

I NEED to see the movie again, though. I just can't shake the feeling that I'm supposed to like it more.

Good review.

though i personally don't agree with this part.

It can have a dark and mysterious, sad scene going on and suddenly turn into a cheesy comedy in a blink of an eye. Overall, I liked the balance between comedy and seriousness, but there weren't really any transitions between the two, it came off as effortless

In that regard i thought it transitioned as well as it could have. for example there were little to no jokes after
Gwens death

That would've undermined the drama for me.

Yeah, after that the problem's gone, but until then I thought there were some severe tonal inconsistencies.

Nicely written review.

I assume your 4 star rating was out of 5?

Yes, it's 4 stars out of 5 ;)

Well, I might as well just write it now. Since it's on my old nokia, I'll keep it short. The negative reviews you've read so far? They're way too forgiving. I have to say this, but this is one of the worst films I've seen, easily among the terrible cbm ones. Iron Man 2 is way better. Thor: The Dark World is way better. And yes...Spider-Man 3 is better. Peter's dance is nothing to the huge amount of cringe worthy scenes in this one. Electro is much worse than I expected even with the reviews in mind. I almost wanted to leave already in the first act. And yes, while the score sounds great on cd, it did not fit at all in the film. Dr Kafka wears frickin lipstick. Neither Norman nor Harry felt anything like the characters you know and love. Electro is much cooler in the comics. Green Goblin...ugh. Giamatti does his worst role. Sandman were better than any of those. I am completely honest when I say that to me, the B&R comparision isn't too far out there. I don't even think Andrew and Emma were any special except for the last scenes. The action was disappointing and the visuals weren't anything special either. The film is so bad, that I now find it hard to appreciate tasm1 anymore because this is a franchise killer. Oh, and Uncle Ben has left absolutely no impact, in fact Peter seems to give no **** about him. And when Peter has to watch Youtube to understand batteries, or be reminded by Gwen about the physics class in 8th grade, yeah Peter comes off as stupid. Electro literally plays music with those poles. The airplane scene is dumb and is only there to remind us of how oh so dangerous a 4 min black out is. Time is rubbed in your face. The subtleness of tasm1 is completely gone, so is the heart. You think this review is badly written and messy? That's nothing compared to the writing and direction of this film.

Oh my goodness, Oz. That really sucks. I was totally not expecting to read something like this from you; it's a real downer to see you make those remarks. I thought for sure you'd end up liking at least some parts of the movie or call it average at worst. I hope I like the film more than you cause I'll probably swear off this franchise if I dislike it more than SM3.

Here is my spoiler-free review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I'll write a spoiler-heavy review after I see the film again sometime next week :yay:

A very well-written review that came off as someone who is being objective although clearly a fan of Spider-man. I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you.

General Discussion thread is reopened.

A solitary person may not have liked it but there is no way in hell this is a 'franchise killer' I guarantee it won't be, and will be well received by the majority.

Obviously you can't please everyone but there is no way in hell this film kills the franchise, from what I've seen so far, working in a cinema, the general public are enjoying it and it's being received well.

It's not bad so much as frustrating - you can easily see how it could be great, but it is happy being mediocre.

I'm not a huge Spider-Man fan but I could potentially see this be frustrating for some fans. I don't think the villains are done a great deal of justice, they're either too one dimensional or unintentionally comedic.

Sounds like it's time to fire Marc Webb. If you can't deliver one good movie with two shots at it, time to go. You don't deserve a third shot.

He's already delivered multiple great movies (TASM and 500 Days) as far as I'm concerned, will judge TASM2 as soon as I'm able.

I actually really loved it. I won't go much into detail, but I can't really think of anything that bothered me in the movie. Maybe the Rhino suit slightly, but I'll give it a pass since we didn't get to see it for that long.

The films aren't awful, but they are lacking. I've come to the conclusion after two films that there are promises being made in both films that aren't being delivered, that story elements aren't reaching their full potential. I think the issue is with Sony deciding to plan so many Spidey films in advanced they're kinda not focusing enough on the film at hand. As such we're getting acceptable films but by no means great films, films whereby story elements are kinda touched on but are never really followed through to any satisfactory degree. It's also paramount in the advertising for the films, the trailers of the last two movies seem to indicate something different is in the works yet the final product is very much something pretty straight forward. For lack of better phrase what's been delivered to date feels more like a dressed up version of a standard superhero film, something that's trying to look more intelligent and serious than it actually is.

What did you think of the screen time Goblin got? and the Length of the fight scene?

I think this will do reasonably well. I saw this with my children and the cinema was about half full. Most of the audience seemed pretty engaged. My impression is that most people watch movies for the experience and they won't nitpick. I don't think people who post on message boards are representative of the general audience.
I am pretty sure the kiddies will like it... It has resonances of Spectacular Spider-Man.

I would have loved to see more of the Goblin, because he was really good for the time he was used, but considering Harry survived (and Norman probably is out there), I would say it's a safe bet we'll see a Goblin again. Maybe in TASM3 already. So yeah, would have loved to see more Goblin, but he played his part well. When he showed up at the power plant, the laugh and his presence was really creepy.

Also, I got some strong Doc Ock vibes from the Kafka guy actually. The accent was weird though.

And yeah, there wasn't scene with "QUESTION OF THE DAY".... Or maybe only in Russia...
And "SOME WEB DESIGN" scene...

Michael Bay delivers great movies as far as some people are concerned. Critically and non-decisively...no. 500 days of Summer was good but it's clear Marc wasn't ready for the big time. We need some experience at the helm...otherwise we have to wait another decade for the hopes of a great Spidey flick. He's had two chances and has fallen short.

You've summed things up really well. While I haven't seen ASM2 yet, it's clear from even the positive reviews of the film that it has several issues (villains, script, editing) that just should not be happening and have now been present for two movies in a row.

Still going to go see it in a few weeks with an open mind, and I'm still excited to do so, but it's just disappointing that after two tries this team hasn't, from most accounts, been able to pull it all together.

Sam Raimi had one strike and was out. Who gives someone three chances to make a good movie?

Sorry but that is YOUR opinion. Your opinion isn't the Sony execs' opinion.

I feel that all studios with cinematic universes and plans ahead fall into the same trap.

I like the way you think. Sony, send a **** ton of money to Phil Lord & Chris Miller to take over Spidey. They would be perfect.

Also, this isn't baseball.

Sam Raimi would have done SM4 and Sony would have let him but he chose to walk away, and either way I personally think raimi hit 3 strikes already by then

I am not much of a big Spider-Man fan. More of an X-Men guy but I caught the film last night here in Sydney. It lacked something for me. Was a fun, enjoyable movie. And there is nothing wrong with that. I think I just felt the story didn't really go anywhere. Spider-Man had some development but not all that much. The scenes between him and Gwen were great. The villains felt a bit lackluster. I did enjoy the effects and I especially loved the score and music when Electro was involved. But they really didn't have like a motive if that makes sense. Not every villain has to have a reason for being bad, but I think in this day and age we need more than I hate Spider-Man let's kill him.

Overall I thought it was a fun film. Not as good as the first Amazing Spider-Man, but in no way as Batman & Robin like some people said. There was some cheesy bits but most comic book films have those moments.

7/10
