DISCLAIMER: I loved the movie and do not condemn it in anyway. This thread is more of a concern than a complaint.

"Does he still stand for truth, justice, all that stuff?" - Perry White in SR

Why doesn't he stand for the American way anymore? The writers even said that they purposely left it out of the script. Why?

The American Way is more than what our recent presidential canidates stand for. It is the ideals America was built upon and why Superman became so popular in American culture and worldwide. If they were so keen on giving us lines from the old Donner film, why couldn't they have come up with an alternative for this line:

"I'm here to fight for truth, justice, and the American way." - Superman

"You're gonna end up fighting every elected official in this country!" - Lois

THAT shows that the American way is more than the politicians running the country. It shows that America stands for more than what some elected official wants. It shows that American ideals embrace freedom, peace, and tolerance.

So why make Superman a globalist in Superman Returns? Why detach him from his American roots simply by subverting one line in the film?

Well, given what's happening in the world today (Iraq?), it might be hard to sell a film overseas with that perspective. If you're following current events at any level, it shouldn't be hard to understand that the American way does not agree with everyone.

Why didn't they use that line, or even market the movie with that aspiration? America is more more hated in the world today than it has ever been. Go figure.

On a related note, perhaps the understandable lack of patriotism of Americans for their own country played into the lackluster opening numbers.

Singer is a Lib anyway...........

They removed it to make him more marketable. the fact is he's 100% Americana, and is american through his core so his philosophies are based on american ideals and whatnot. But what can you do? Money/Politics vs Art yunno... Pride in your country be damned.

I watched the old Max Fliesher cartoons, they said 'Truth and Justice'........no American way.

I guess American Way was added in during the propaganda era. It makes sense to remove it now. It isnt as relevant considering Supes in an international hero.

because everyone hates america these days...LoL

The American Way is essentially just propaganda added to the Superman mythology. If "truth and justice" don't sum up what Superman is all about...what does? What more does "The American Way" mean? A house, two cars, and a boat? He sure doesn't stand for that..."justice" sums up a lot by itself.

Because America isn't too popular anymore, what with the fascism and all.

Plus it is cooler that Superman helps out the whole world as opposed to one place.

You could tell they were going for more of an international angle with this version of Supes, especially with the montage of news shots showing him saving people in Germany, the Philippines, and other places. It's as it should be, Supes represents humanity, not America.

As far as I can recall Superman has been a defender of the Earth. I resides in America but he goes where ever he is needed.

He is the ultimate illegal alien.

If there was a script that has him America bashing I could see a problem but Perry not using the exact tag line that Superman was quoted by Lois in Superman the Movie is not a big deal.

Unless you are Fox News of course. I mean in America are we that insecure that we have to have a fictional defender validate our sense of self worth?

I think not, but it makes a good platform for politically driven news houses to get their agenda out to all of the little lemmings.

honestly, i wished they wrote it in as "truth, justice and liberty". its still very American but is a lot more inclusive of nations who has adopted the same beliefs.

I've always thought that line was dated. Besides, he was sent to Earth, not America.

that'd have been a good change. either liberty and freedom might have been a better choice than "all that stuff"

I'd even have taken "the kryptonian way"

It was dumb to do what they did with that line, he is an American hero, I'm tired of all the American bashing, a few short years ago there was all this American pride and now when America's champion Returns they leave that out. It's B.S.!!! I love America and Superman and he is the American way, he is an American hero, if he was british I wouldn't mind them saying and the English way. God Bless America.

That's ridiculous. Really, you should be ashamed.

I think it's b/c he's a GLOBAL hero, not just America.....or even Metropolis. We see him rescue people from other countries IN other countries in the film. It might be a way to let everyone know Superman doesn't play favorites.

But, he still stands for the American way.....kinda. He's the ultimate illegal alien, and back then.....we, the U.S., were considered the melting pot and all. Now though...I dunno, we seem to want to throw ALL illegal aliens out....so, it's a tough spot to stand on.

It really bugged me that the line was omitted. Why include it at all? It almost seemed like a very purposeful political statement was being made by presenting it the way it was done. Come on, everyone knows that line, and to hear it said without "...and the American Way?" is just lame. Especially in a movie featuring the triumphant return of an American icon premiering just before the 4th of July!

I didn't mind it was left out, still a great movie no less.

Well, I think it was also to get the point across that Perry doesn't really care.......he just wants the scoop.

SR is getting unnecessary heat because of this, if they were going to leave it out, it should have been left out COMPLETELY, alluding to it as they did only gave people reason to complain.

I don't think it fits in as easily as it did in the past, however there are a lot of people that were apparently offended.

I believe that Superman is a part of Americana. Just give us a shot of Superman with an American flag in the background or something.

This is not about being left or right wing: Superman is AMERICA. If Spider-Man can do it at the end of the first flick (remember), Superman can do it too. THere's not wrong with it, and it has nothing to do with our stupid president.

But, Superman is MORE than that......you could say the shot of the world could display that as well.

I think EVERYONE knows the line, it's well known....so there wasn't any need finish it. But, remember....Perry said it. He doesn't give a **** what the line is.

I won't debate politics here but the "fascism" comment is just asinine ignorance. But I guess it sounds "cool". America is not Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Stalin's USSR or Kim Il Jong's North Korea.
