The Atheism Thread - Part 5

I think if you're Atheist you shouldn't be able to celebrate holidays like Christmas or Hanukkah.

Eh, Christmas is as Christian as a mosque.

In other words, it's not Christian at all.

So, yeah, when the company I work for closes on the 25th, I'm not about to go in and do nothing because no one else is in the office. If I could even get in.

By all means don't work. I didn't go to school in Jersey on Jewish Holiday's and I'm not Jewish. Enjoy those corporate perks lol

Just don't exchange gifts Christmas morning dammit! I should go on Fox and back the war on Christmas...and include Atheists as well, buying up all of our gifts......imagine how much less hectic black Friday would be....people probably wouldn't get stomped to death. I'm trying to save lives here.

Black Friday is a religion unto itself. And it's awful.

I open presents on Christmas Eve. Christmas day is reserved for drinking all the alcohol left over from Christmas Eve.

To me Christmas has become far too commercialized to have any substantial spiritual significance. For me it's just thanksgiving with presents AND food lol. But it is definitely not nearly as "Christian" as Christians think it is.

I think his point is that it's just as Christian as it is atheist or any other religion that isn't pagan.

Although I'm pretty sure nicknitro was joking? Could be wrong. The interest makes sarcasm difficult.

Bingo.

Exchanging gifts is a common activity at festivals, and I doubt it really has much to do with a baby born in the garage of a Middle Eastern motel many years ago.

Christians should stop trying to ruin everyone's Yule festivities with their misplaced sense of ownership.

They just hijacked December 25th for whatever reason. No originality.

But, yeah, you're right about the commercialized thing. It also seems to be the time of year where every guy gets "subtle" hints about buying expensive jewelry for their wife or girlfriend or even proposing (and make sure that rock is huge).

And it somehow gives legitimacy to women everywhere to get mad at their significant other for not buying into the commercial bullcrap.

Bingo.

You know what sarcasm is right?

Christianity being associated with Christmas has been going on far longer than you and I have been alive so I would expect you to at least be used to the association by now. I'm really sorry our Church going effects your pagan rituals. Unless you're some pagan God sent down to tell us all whats what........but you couldn't be because Atheist's don't believe in any God, pagan, Christian, or the like. So you really just hate Christians and will take any chance you can get to show us how much you disagree with our views.

P.S. the "baby born in a garage of a Middle Eastern motel" comment was cute.

Huh? Are you speaking in tongues?

I am content for Christians to do whatever they like on Dec 25, as long as they don't harm anyone else. I just don't think they can claim any ownership of the traditional festivities, which have little to do with wee Jesus.

December 25th being associated with anything other than Christianity has been going on longer than Christianity itself.

Your church going has zero affect on how I celebrate Christmas, as long as you keep it to yourself. But, the religious are incapable of such a thing. So, I feel the need to tell you how Christmas and Christianity have very little in common because you feel the need to judge me because I'm not a Christian.

Read an article today talking about the war on christmas making a good point:

Government votes to cut millions on food stamps which leaves millions of children without nutrition...but god forbid you don't say Merry Christmas!!! "These poor starving children must know christ before we starve them to death", said the government!

Jesus said to take care of the poor not worry about the proper salutations for a damn holiday he never knew nor cared about.

Socialism = communism and "capitalism" = Christianity according to various people and governments in the US.

Kwanzaa>Christmas You know why? Because there is a hilarious look that people give you when you say that you celebrate Kwanzaa. Since only two people celebrate it you can scheme people into buying you guilt gifts for like 7 days.:o

Jephthah (Judges 11)

Yahweh apparently demonstrated kindness to Abraham by changing his mind about whether he wanted Isaac sacrificed. What happened when it was Jephthah's daughter's turn under the knife?

Which is so weird to me since Jesus was extremely liberal and would probably be considered a commie bastard by many who claim to worship the man today.

He was certainly liberal, though I don't think there is anything to suggest he was a statist in any way.

Overall, he seems pretty laid back. I think I'd have liked him, as long as we stayed off the subject of religion.

At a lot of modern Christians would probably be very disappointed to hear his views on healthcare, gun ownership etc.

I hate that Christianity coincides with being conservative. I think thats why I like Eastern philosophy soo much.

Well, it doesn't always. Methodists are often quite left wing. Reverend Paul Flowers is a prime example.

In social media being Catholic and being right wing is like peanut butter and jelly :whatever:

I find Catholics to be the least conservative Christians. The Church is quite conservative, but the people are fairly moderate.

With the Protestants it's sometimes even the reverse, with the churches being more liberal than the people.

Love you man.... but you're just mad cause anyone and everyone has not surprisingly used the national holiday to mean whatever they want it to mean. And that kills you.

Regardless of their religion, their belief, or not. And everyone does it; jews, hindus, buddhists, atheist, everyone, and they don't believe in your god.
Indifferent to how the date supposedly connects (and it doesn't), they've just filled the holiday with fun tradition, imagery, gifts, customs, and whimsical elements, that have absolutely NOTHING to do with anything in the bible, never have and never will.

They celebrate with love, for family, friends, and all humanity no matter their belief.
And that's what makes it a fun holiday for everyone!:woot:

You instead are like the grinch saying - well they shouldn't be allowed to celebrate, wanting to control who gets to celebrate and how, you'll probably be fuming with your self righteous anger and bitterness all season.

Merry xmas
