The Atheism Thread - Part 6

I have yet to see evidence to prove or disprove a god so I just live my life as I see fit within the confines of the law of my area, give or take a bit. :p

That's pretty much how I live too, although I theoretically identify myself as an atheist.

I don't really consider myself anything. If verifiable proof turns up one way or another I might change my stance but it'd have to be consistent.

We've already missed four or so AND Ragnarok, so I'm assuming you're out of luck.

Damn...I guess it's time to get drunk, read some Nietzsche and have a crisis of some kind.

When God makes it stop snowing, I will finally believe in him.

It's always snowing somewhere. It's called the seasons Mrs. K.

I can't handle it. It's giving me Seasonal Affective Disorder and evidently God either doesn't care or doesn't exist.

Give it a month or so and it'll go away for a while. Also, those tend to be the options when talking about god. That or 'mysterious ways'.

And it's actually pretty logical. "I don't believe in something that probably can never be proven and I see no evidence of." Pretty straight-forward.

Unfortunately, it isn't straightforward to a lot of people.

I'm just puzzled about something here. Now there are some Atheists who are quite tolerant, but those I have dealt with are much more vitriolic and militant about their beliefs to the point of trying to force their opinions on me (Has something to do with their perverted, selfish, disgusting intentions I assure you.) that there is nothing out there even though science has confirmed there is a possible creationary atomic particle which logically explains the existence of "God" as a real thing, not some bearded guy on a cloud like many uneducated humans view God as. What baffles me is that they accuse Christians of pushing their views on them (Which I have not done at all.) but are guilty of the same intolerant behavior. I have no problem with people that don't want to believe in the "God" Particle and its level of creationary force, but please I wish Atheists would stop trying to "convert" me to their illogical belief system.
This post is one giant cluster**** of ignorance.

I've noticed. And they're allowed to think that, but since they come into the atheism thread, I'll try to explain it to them as best I can.

I know. I'm referring to in general. There are lots of misconceptions about atheism in general, i.e. atheism and agnosticism being mutually exclusive terms, atheism being about worshipping the devil, etc. It should be straightforward to understand and yet it isn't to so many people, and that makes me facepalm at the human species.

Well, in that case I feel the same. It's exasperating at times.

I came across this video just a minute ago, and thought I'd share it. Scary part showing indoctrination of children speaking in tongues and being excited to die and an adult preacher justifying the deaths of children at the hands of God starts at 2 minutes in.

You know, there's that saying, fool me once... but how many damn times?

These people need to read a history book. Learn a bit about William Miller, and his Great Disappointment. Or that jackass who predicted the world would end last year. You know... that guy. Actually there is a jackass every year, so I don't even remember his name.

You know, I actually worry about some terrible natural disaster (whose affects might be exacerbated by the actions of mankind in some way), say the Yellow Stone caldera erupting, or an undersea Earthquake causing a massive coastal tidal wave, that kind of thing, leading to a new " Great Awakening" kind of affect on the population of the Western world. The scientific world view is just not deeply ingrained enough in our society to stop a large scale movement to old world religious thinking at this point. Look at all the people that WANT to believe Hurricane Katrina was somehow about Gay marriage and Abortion.

I'd like to think it goes without saying that most if not all of these people depicted fall under the category of extremists and do not represent Christians as a whole.

Nothing wrong with people being religious, just that no one wants to see destruction and what not cause from it. If that makes sense.

Thunder, did I ever tell you about the video I saw (from like NatGeo or something similar) in community college summer 2012? About a Catholic guy who for like a few days or a week a year would let himseld get possessed and cure people? Like he would eat glass and eyes in back of head stuff. In like South America or someone. People who didn't convert all the way to Christianity and have some of their old faith.

I actually have respect for people who truly hold to the best aspects of their faith ETM, especially when it comes to compassion or seeking some kind of moral justice in this world (It's why the scandals of pedophile priests in the Catholic church anger me so. The God I used to worship and looked to please was a God of true justice. How can one muster outrage for two gay people loving one another, but not do everything in ones power to stop the sexual exploitation of children at the hands of authority figures IN the church itself?!! ). But... I do worry that in the event of some kind of mass disaster we could see a very shocked and weary populous turn to a very extremist and dogmatic form of religion, which would not, in my opinion, be good for the whole of society.

Look at what happened to the Library at Alexandria. Think of the vast knowledge we would have today of the ancient world, think of what the West and Near East lost when it was destroyed by zealots. I worry that we are not yet at a place where that slide into irrationalism is not something that could easily transpire.
