About the world comment:

I went to a fundamentalists Christian school and they preached that the world was the Devil and his domain and the only way to be closer to Christ was to reject the world and it's worldly ways and strive to be more like the good book tells us.

You see, music, cursing, movies, vulgarity, porno, violence, video games, vices, addictions, untucked shirts, alcohol, bars, restaurants with bars, eating out on Sunday etc etc are all worldly things.

I know a woman who won't eat out, because that's what people of the world do. And she only shops at certain places because she believes the other places are worldly and for the Devil. And I am 100% serious about this. Oh and Latin is evil. Yes the language itself is evil and of the Devil. Anything Celtic isn't allowed in her house. Catholics are all devil worshiping lost souls too...who pay taxes to the pope who is a devil worshiping anti-christ. It's insanity.

Rodhulk's view of worship and rejection of 'worldly' things demands an extreme level of control. It's Orwellian. It's just the way Christopher Hitchens describes religion.

What kind of a system declares that 'lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, boastful pride of life' are things that are satanic?

What kind of a person believes you are to put your priorities on a mythic being, over humans, over the things we can take joy in in this world?

Jesus took this thought a step further when He said, "Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life." Not loving the world extends to our own lives as well. Jesus said if we love anything more than Him, we are not worthy of Him

What kind of a sick view is this? You've lowered your status to that of a slave and have convinced yourself that you're not to enjoy life.

How can you distinguish these bizarre beliefs from that of a cult? You beat up on yourself and convince yourself you're worthless and born a sinner, you put this mythic figure as priority number 1 even over your own life, you set up impossible standards to live up to. Sounds like a cult to me. Just like Orwell's 1984, a system that demands total control of your life, and enacts double-think to believe that giving up your life to the party is a virtue.

How can such a pathetic person even be reasoned with? Such a person's willingly not just given up their brain to a 2000 year old book, they've given up their own self-worth.

Trying to go to church for a few months and finding a lot of the people there totally arrogant and obnoxious makes me not interested in spending eternity singing with them in their competition to see which of them can blather to the sky the loudest.

The pastor was a cool dude though, I would be a character witness for him without hesitation. He's a chill, laidback dude who doesn't judge people and tries to guide his congregation to be less judgmental (with iffy success).

This "don't love the world" stuff is just nuts to me. The world is life; it's all around you. Rejecting what you can see, feel and enjoy for something that has never been proven to exist seems bizarre. It's not unlike rejecting your biological father's love because you're waiting for Santa Claus to come and be your dad instead.
