The Batman comics recommendation thread!

Batman Annual #14 is still the most interesting interpretation of Two-Face's origin to me and it's a brilliant Two-Face story to boot as well. The Long Halloween owes so much to it to but was never anywhere near as interesting cause reading Loeb's writing is such a plodding chore at times.

Mothy, do pick it up... it's good.
absolutely. it's a beautiful, little crime story in the same ilk as azzarello's tremendous "100 Bullets". well, not 'as good', but still pretty damn enjoyable.

I'd also like to recommend azzarello's "Batman: Broken City". it works damn fine as a prequel to 'Joker', and is - overall - very good.

is anyone reading THE WIDENING GYRE?

what's it like?

trying to figure out if I should pick it up when it comes out in trade...

Agreed! I've actually given a copy or two out as gifts.

I´m currently reading The Widening Gyre - I´m surprised not to find a thread on it, BTW - and I´m enoying it. I like the notion, "what if a regular girl Bruce likes is actually okay with his mission, and will make the best out of their relationship under the circumstances?" Smith has a really good grasp of Batman and his world, he manages to write Batman´s inner monologue in a captivating way still being true to the character, it comes to show his skill that´I´m enoying a long Batman story where he´s not fighting his A-list enemies or has a major case to investigate. I´m curious about Baphomet as well, is he a great new ally or an enemy in disguise, or something in-betwee?

Finished reading Nightwing: Mobbed Up & Renegade. Really liked both GNs! First GN was kinda soft on heavy action but it was intriquing to see Dick do undercover gigs for Blüdhaven's safety. :)

Renegade was awesome! Deathstroke and Rose we're cool villains and Superman's appearance is always welcomed when it's a Dick Grayson story! Tho i do have to ask. Whatever happened to Dick and Barbara's Marriage?

If you guys like reading stories with Batman teaming up with other heroes, let me propose some of my favourites:
1) Superman/Batman Annual #2
2) Superman-Batman-WonderWoman: Trinity
3) JLA #1-4 (Morrison's run)

They 're all fantastic stories with Batman.

Mr. Earle... is Superman-Batman-WonderWoman: Trinity really any good?

I've looked into buying it but some of the reviews are terrible.

Its a really nice story. I dont know why you said that the reviews were negative since wikipedia says:
Critics and fans applauded the series, during and following its original release in comic book format, and onto collection format. Reviewers felt that the change in storytelling by having the characterization more of the star of the mini-series, than the pacing, plotting or action, was a welcome change. This was due to, what reviewers felt, that all three characters had "shallow portrayals" in their monthly titles at the time.[1] Some reviewers found some drawbacks, such as the concept getting a little lost along the way. As well as the fact that some felt that there was no feeling, nor challenge, that could've even suggest that the Big Three might have been unable to prevail in the adventure from this mini-series.[2]
The "25 Greatest Batman Graphic Novels" by IGN, later used on amazon.com, listed the TPB collection ranked at #36.[3]
Amazon also has good reviews for it:
http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Superman-Wonder-Woman-Trinity/dp/1401201873

Maybe you're mixing it up with the Trinity (just "Trinity") monthly series, which is indeed a pile of garbage.

Oh, I was just going by some reviewers on AMAZON, but yeah. I'm gonna read it.

Thank you Mr. Earle.

Alright I just finished The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, and Batman Private Casebook. Can't decide if my next read should be Final Crisis, Batman RIP, or Batman and Robin volume 1. Any other pointers or recs?

Read in this order: Read in this order: Batman RIP, Final Crisis then B&R vol. 1.

add battle for the cowl between rip and b&r.

I'd also recommend neil gaiman & andy kubert's "whatever happened to the caped crusader?" which is better than rip imho. :cwink: :woot:

Read and loved Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader a few months back. Thank for the input, there are so many good ones out there that sometimes I don't know what to read next.

Also, Batman #682-683 aka "last rites," that explain the events at the end of rip and how he end up on the closing moments of final crisis.

An amazing read is paul dini's "heart of hush," origin story of hush and a prologue of sorts to rip. A Paul Dini classic masterpiece story. Can't recommend it highly enough. :cwink:

Private Casebook is the first time I've read anything written by Paul Dini. I don't know what took me so long to come around, as BTAS is what really got me into Batman and all the different villains. My list of must reads shall continue to grow.

Then "heart of hush" is a MUST READ for you. ;)

"Heart of Hush" (Detective Comics #846-850)

Parallel to the main story in Batman, but actually a prologue to it, Paul Dini's Heart of Hush deals with the return of Thomas Elliot to Gotham City and his plan to kill Batman before the Black Glove. Also explored in this arc is his connection to the Gotham underworld, and how his family history helped transform Elliot into Hush.

I want to start reading batman but I only have money for one trade a month.

Are all the comic books connected like Spider-man or can I just choose the best and follow it in tpb?
