The Batman General News & Discussion Thread - Part 2

New Synopsis? It's not on the Official Site yet, so don't know if it's real, but it's popping up everywhere:

THE BATMAN is an edgy, action-packed thriller that depicts Batman in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

Thoughts?
Sounds interesting. So Bruce needs to find balance and uses his anger for good, to safe people.

Edgy has just found new meaning amongst blockbusters because people seem to think it means forced maturity that comes off cringey. It means anxious or unsettling. I’d call Good Time or Uncut Gems edgy and they’re fantastic films.

STATUS: Active Development
PRODUCER: Matt Reeves DC ENTERTAINMENT WARNER BROS. TELEVISION 4000 Warner Blvd. A spinoff of The Batman, described as a “Scarface-like” series about the rise of the Penguin character. The Penguin, otherwise known as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, is a dapper mob boss and one of Batman’s primary villains. (Production is due to begin mid 2022.)

Still waiting to hear something about GCPD. This is from Production Weekly.

I wonder if they hit a brick wall with GCPD. Been nothing but radio silence for a while now.

Nah, it's still on the writing phase. If that thing about Penguin is true it's probably because Lauren Lefranc is working with a writers room while Joe Barton is writing it all by himself.

Matt's The Batman script took 2 years to finish, Joe was just hired in January. It's reasonable to think it'd take him a year to finish the scripts for the show.

Maybe Penguin will cover some of the narrative real estate originally intended for GCPD.

Feel like I’m the only person really excited about Barton. I love his screenplay for The Ritual.

The Arkham working title might be a hint that the “Arkham show” (that Jett heard about) has taken over the GCPD concept.

New showrunner coming in...maybe they just couldn't crack the story and moved onto the other spin-off option that was discussed. Also GCPD may need Jeffrey Wright and maybe John Turturro to work, since it's set only a year before The Batman. You gotta have Falcone and probably Maroni in a show like that. So scheduling conflicts may be a thing too.

I don't mind if it happens or gets canceled. There's already a few other ideas around the corner.

It's still in the writing phase. I wouldn't read too much into it, and working titles typically don't mean anything. Joe still refers to it as Gotham PD on his bio.

Damn, so we could have GCPD out by late 2022, and Penguin by early 2023. And I'm sure we'll hear rumblings sometime next year about a Catwoman show which *fingers crossed* they'd start filming in 2023. A woman writer sounds about right.

I'm just not high on the team behind the Penguin as of now.

I don't think that Gotham PD will be out that early. My guess is that Gotham PD and Penguin will shoot around the same time, and they'll both release in mid 2023 to early 2024.

Oops I didn't see the typing dog, so I thought he saw "casting soon" and said “THIS!”

Okay so summer/fall shoot for Penguin probably means summer-ish 2023 on HBO. But GCPD might start shooting in the spring (must be much further along than Penguin). So id assume the cop show would be out anytime between spring-fall 2023.

Nah. Giri/Haji is quite fresh. It falls into some cliched crime/character stuff, but its well done and inventively structured.

Im honestly super excited about this show. I feel like once we see the film, we'll see the potential for what this could cover and what an awesome idea it is to expand upon the world Reeves is building.

I hear great things about Giri/Haji on Netflix. Not just the writing but visually too. Maybe he’ll bring some of that crew in for GCPD.

giri/haji is pure gold. Some of the absolute best writing on TV. Him operating in the Matt Reeves world is… ::chef’s kiss::

There is nothing degrading about sex work.
I agree in general, but for a fictional character to be portrayed a certain way for over four decades, then suddenly changed to fit what I’m guessing was Miller’s idea of empowerment struck me as a degradation. And while Selina Kyle most certainly uses her sexuality as a weapon, to actually suggest she’s having sex with many partners for money is ridiculous. MY Selina always took what she needed and wanted by stealth, wit, and if nescessary, force.

So taking it by force aka violence is more honourable than taking it through sex? Weird way to look at it. Wit plays into it as well if she's using ppl through her own sexuality. That's smart. And rich ppl would easily fall for that trap. Sounds like something Selina could do.

Some people don't want to admit it but Hathaway's Selina and her friend were totally escorts. It's quite obvious in that wrist watch scene.

You don't have to be "edgy" with it (as the kids like to say as a negative term). Maybe she used to be a prostitute and has given that life up. Maybe Falcone pays her to be his girl and they're not related in The Batman, and she wants out? Or maybe she doesn't care? Whatever the case may be, it doesn't have to be degrading for Selina to be a sex worker of any sort. And you can also write it in that she DOES feel degraded and wants a change, because ppl in Gotham are awful. Both ways work. It's all perspective.

Year One is an influence and Zoe was told to read it for research. So it's bound to play some kind of an influence. Or at least I'm expecting it too.

Not nescessarily, but that’s how the character was written for over forty years before Miller got a hold of her. Quote me an issue from the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Age depictions where Selina sleeps with someone for money instead of using stealth or force. I mean has she ever struck you as someone who would include the gratification of various men in her own pursuits of wealth?
