I've never loved the Dark Knight Returns costume and bulky short-eared Batman outside of that particular story. It suits the very specific themes and imagery that Miller was going for there, but it doesn't have much appeal to me outside of it. It also doesn't help that Snyder in his extreme machismo fails to see or adapt the human elements of the design. It is supposed to be an aging Batman who is coming out of retirement. The bulkiness is because Bruce is an older man and not in the same shape he was in his prime. Miller omitted the elaborate musculature seen in art at the time depicting a prime Batman for a reason. That Batman is an aging prize fighter like Ali in the late 70s or Rocky in Rocky Balboa. He is thicker, softer, and has to rely on brute force because he's lost his speed and stamina. The blocky chest symbol and short ears on the cowl reflect that.
Snyder doesn't understand any of that (just like he didn't understand most of the subtext of Watchman and the way the costumes there are not supposed to be flattering). Instead, in his Randian quest to make everything badass and ubermensch, gives this aging, bulky Batman ridiculously defined muscles that rival Superman's. Without steroids, a human being can either be a bear mode tank or some lean, ripped Bruce Lee type... Not both.
On top of that you have the technical execution... They brought back the aging foam latex from 89' through Begins, which was already showing its age a decade earlier. Regardless of their attempts to add textures or pretend it was some sort of fabric pulled taut over rippling muscle, it never look like anything else other than what it was, a highly artificial and constricting rubber suit. And Affleck, already an actor of limited talents, failed to look anything other than constipated due to the way the heavy rubber cowl crushed his face.
Pattinson's suit is light years ahead and understands that comics and live action are entirely different media. With its effective use of strategically located armour plating, miliary cloth undershirt, lightness and flexibility, it does a much better job of conveying the Batsuit's comics attributes in live action. It gives Pattinson added bulk in the right places while maintaining an overall tall and lean silhouette like Neal Adams' best work.
