The mods have approved a thread for discussion about the 73 year old senator from Vermont and Democratic candidate for the 2016 Election, so here it is.

Do you agree with his ideas - such as raising the minimum wage and bringing reforms to Wall Street - or do you find them to be too far to the left to actually work? Does he have a real shot at the presidency, or is Hillary the Democrat to beat? Discuss! :)

Bernie has my vote in the primaries

Agreed. I personally trust him the most to actually look out for the people more than any other candidate. I believe we need to be making more strides to have universal health care, give our citizens a full public education, and decrease wealth inequality in our nation if we are to keep up with the rest of the industrialized world.

Same here on all those points. I made a comment in the Trump thread but it seems like as of right now America is clamoring for candidates that say what they mean and at least appear to be attempting to back it up. That seems to be the key with both Trump and Sanders striking a chord on their respective sides

And others are afraid of him because of his more socialist ideas, but there has got to be a happy medium between an overbearing socialist leader and this corporate-dominated cluster**** we're in now, and he might just be it.

I feel that Bernie would be an absolute disaster in the general election. He strikes me as a Tea Party type of candidate. One that absolutely excites the base, but his policies will turn everyone else off, particularly in vital white suburban areas that Democrats need to win in states like Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, etc.

Hillary Clinton will become the next American President, Bernie. Drop out now before she is forced to go negative on you.

Far too leftist to actually work/win a general election. I'm concerned about all these minimum wage hikes. While I understand there is a problem in our economy with most of the new jobs being created coming from the low paying service industry so I can see why this might seem like an easy fix and it's one of the reason why I'm warming up to the idea. That being said I think all these cities are foolish about how they are going about it, if there is going to be a massive minimum wage hike it should be tiered like they have in Australia, or else there are going to be a ton of 18-20 year olds unable to find jobs, learn the responsibilities and values of hard work. I know I put my way through college by working at a grocery store and I'm not sure those opportunities will be there for these kids coming up. I'm also concerned about the kiosk replacing workers if they start to become too expensive and how it will lead to less jobs (per the CBO) and whether or not our economy is strong enough to pass legislation that will destroy jobs. It's not as simple as the left makes it out to be, and why I understand some of their points it seems they are dismissing any of the concerns.

Personally I like the guy. I'm not a fan about everything but he does say a lot of the right things that get the younger generation on his side while a lot of the Republicans are just *******s and whine about the 'poor stealing their money'. If I was American I'd vote for him over any other candidate. Sadly, I don't see him winning. :(

Sad thing, he was warning the country about NAFTA all the way back in 1991, which I personally believe, is the reason for huge wealth inequality, and many of our employment problems in the USA.

And on the issues that lead to the 2008 crash. This man has been on point one too many times in the last 20+ years. I can see why the establishment would be frightened of him.

I mean, not really. If anything half the things he was proposing were just as much of the problem leading to the crash. He's complaining why banks don't lend more money to the poor and middle class and that's what they did and people bought houses they couldn't afford. This is a man that voted against TARP, the single most important legislation that helped us get out of this recession. I don't think his opinion on economic theory should be trusted.

Bernie's got my vote, no doubt about it. I was also genuinely surprised and proud of my hometown of Phoenix during his rally here. He had something like 11,000 people show up. Shame he won't get the nomination. Clinton is too big a political machine and will grind up anyone in her path on her way to furthering her career. I'm a liberal and I'm absolute against Hillary Clinton. It's never been about the people with her. It's career, like so many other politicians.

Bernie Sanders has zero chance of winning the Democratic nomination. Hillary Clinton is the only Democrat who is capable of raising the billions of dollars neccessary to fight the Republicans. Any Democrat who votes for Bernie is wasting their vote!

I'm only a Democrat by default. I'm a progressive first, so Sanders it is.

Im registered Unaffliated but have voted Democrat in the last two presidential elections and that wont change with this election. The only reason Im not registered Democrat is because being Unaffliated gives me a bit of breathing room amongst my strongly conservative Republican family. But Im a stalewart liberal and progressive so Bernie will get my vote in the primaries. If Hillary gets the nomination fpr the Democrat ticket Ill vote for her tho.

I drove up from Yuma to attend his Phoenix rally, and it was pretty awesome. The first election I was old enough to vote in was the '08 race, but no candidate had ever incited me enough to get up and get involved. I am attending a meeting here in Yuma tomorrow to see what we can do to hopefully drum up some support in Yuma County.

It will be interesting to see how the next year turns out, frankly I don't see anything worth writing home about in any of the other candidates. Especially the other side, I mean Rick Perry is potentially facing criminal charges for abusing his power as governor! "Hey, vote for me!"

But I thought America NEEDED Rick Perry because Comrade Obamer and the Satanic SCOTUS is making war on Christians??:huh:

Guess we'll have to pray for him if we want him to succeed.

Anyone who works for a living shouldn't be for Bernie!

Dude, we get it. You are all about Hillary 2016! but there is a process here. Voting for Bernie in the primaries is a way to force Hillary to take a stand on several of the issues she is trying to shy away from so she can run to the center as possible. If Hillary wins the nom (which I'm sure she will) she has my vote but I would rather see her take a stand on issues that are important to me and a lot of other Dem's so she stops being so vague with things. So no, it is not a wasted vote. It shows her that she risks losing some of her base if she doesn't play ball

I'm pretty sure you have to be registered as one of the main parties to vote in their respective primaries. As long as your family isn't in the habit of stealing your mail I don't see how they could ever find out you regestired as a Democrat

Anyone who works for a living shouldn't be for Bernie!

Once again another idiotic statement made by you with absolutely nothing to back it up, you literally bring nothing of value to any thread I have ever seen you post in. Why would any of us liberals take advice from you when you appear to be the typical FAUX news loving uninformed Republican?

This is how it works for Unaffiliated voters:

I'm Unaffiliated. Can I vote in the primary?

If you registered as an Unaffiliated voter and want to vote in the Primary, you can ask for the Democratic Party primary ballot, the Republican Party primary ballot, or neither. Your choice does not change your Unaffiliated status or obligate you to vote for a party’s candidates in the General Election. However, if there is a Primary Run-off, you can only participate in the Run-off of the same party that you selected in the original Primary.

Wow, I never knew that. Very cool. I almost want to register as an independent and vote for someone horrible in the GOP primaries haha

Well if you do make sure you register "Unaffliated". "Independent" is actually its own separate party with a specific set of idealogies like the GOP and Democrat party, and isnt the same thing as being registered "Unaffliated".

When I first registered I about registered Independent but the DMV employee stopped me and asked me if I was registering for the Independent party or if I wanted to be registered Unaffiliated. She said I wasnt the first to make the mistake.

Right. The work that everyone has been putting themselves under piles of debt to get access to. Nope, nothing wrong at all with the way things have been run. No major changes necessary.

:whatever:
