THE BEST BAND/GROUP OF ALL-TIME(according to SHH!)

Their biggest hits were in the 50s. Plus if you think about 50s rock and roll lasted from 1954/1955 until the advent of the Beatles in 1962/63. I do not think the everlies should be in the 60s category.

Well, the Beatles were definitely the best band of the 60's in my book. However, I'm not the one coming up with the list of choices.

Success has nothing to do with being the more talented or best of two different bands, Red. If it did, Britney Spears would widely be considered the most accomplished musician ever, perhaps. Success is often more about marketing and who gets pushed to the masses than it does who has more talent or makes better music. When the Everly Brothers were big, they had a HUUUUUUUUGE marketing push behind them. They were good looking white guys who made "safe" "rock and roll", so the record company marketed them to death and payed plenty a DJ to play their records. The O'Jays were a group of young black men who made "black" soul-funk-rock in a day and age where that was considered dangerous to society and black's weren't given equal societal status. Who was the more talented of the two groups from a purely musical perspective? Wasn't the Everly Bros.

QFT.

(Everly Brothers vs. O'Jays)

I personally just think their music is better. Success shouldn't necessarily be a factor in talking about quality, but it shouldn't be a damning one either.

And I agree with whoever brought up the fact the Everly Brothers could fit in the 50s better, but since all of the best groups of all time were apparently from the last <50 years you can't expect too much consistency in this contest.

Even though I only like a few of their songs, I'll vote for the Stones. They are one of the most highly regarded bands that I don't actually like.

They don't call themselves The Greatest Rock And Roll Band In The World because it's simply a catchy name.

The Rolling Stones, easily, over The Band or anyone.

The O'Jays didn't write or have any hand in their own material, however. A large part of their musical greatness goes to the great Philadelphia based blue eyed soul producers of that era, such as Thom Bell and a few others whose names escape me.

The Band is brilliant, but no one can deny the sheer power of The Rolling Stones. Gimme Shelter, along with Sympathy For The Devil, are two of those perfectly crafted songs that just go down in history.

My vote goes to the Stones.

Do not forget "All Down The Line," "Satisfaction," "Brown Sugar," "*****," "No Expectations," "Honky Tonk Women," "Midnight Rambler," "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," "Live With Me," "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo," and countless others that ooze raw, unbridled passion and pure energy that absolutely define what rock and roll is all about.

Also, they are the greatest band ever in terms of live performances (Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, anyone?). I have one of their concerts on right now.
