No, he walked into that scientology center on 42nd street, never to return

Scientology center? I'm heading there in the morning.

So it looks like there's a big possibility I'll be moving to NY in the next month. Is there any chance for a cheap hotel anywhere in the city or nearby that I could stay at while looking for an apt?

What part of the city are you looking to be in, Calvin?

jag

well, it would just have to be commutable to the city. It's gonna be a rough move since I have to leave before august 15 (my lease here in PA is up), and I don't have a place in NY yet. Nor have I even begun looking.

Did you get a job up there? NYC just approved a big-ass hike in rent/lease costs and control, so you picked a terrible time to move there. The outer burroughs like Queens are going to be a bit more affordable. You'll pay through the nose to be in Manhattan.

Well, I found a job up there that should be easy to get. It's something I really like doing. It doesn't pay a lot at first, but I do have some extra cash stored away as a buffer to carry me through initially. I just don't want to be bankrupted paying for hotels while I look for a place. I do have a free round trip ticket that I could use to go up early and look, but the hotels would still be a problem. Are there hostels in NY?

I think you should explore any possible mooching opportunites.

The problem with cheap hotels in NYC is that, well....they're cheap hotels with all the negative connotations that go with it. Try www.hoteldiscounts.com and see what you can find.

jag

Well, it'd just be for a few days while doing some hardcore apt searching, so I could deal with some negative connotations.

Apartment searching in NYC does not happen in days, man. It can take a month or two to find a place.

jag

Yeah, it's not easy to find an apartment in ny.
And they arent exactly cheap

Brooklyn or queens is probably your best bet
I prefer queens

Well I mean it doesn't have to be exactly in NY. I'd be willing to bus or train for an hour or whatever. What are the leases like? Is there any way to not get tied into an apt for a year? Could I get one, then search for a month, then change? It's tough to do that here, but is it maybe different in NY?

Queens. My in-laws live there. You can find reasonable (for NY) apartments and housing there and there are some decent neighborhoods. A lot of families live there because it's affordable, nice and fairly safe as far as NYC goes.

I like the sound of Queens. I've always loved the accent

Ah, Craig's list, good idea. I'll try to scope out a ton of places and be ready to check them out before I head up.
