The Boondocks Thread

"was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined."

That line says it all right there. My guess is that whoever was responsible for the long ass delays between the seasons couldn't get their **** together. Considering that they did season 4 without McGruder it leads me to believe that he has been the culprit behind the long waits in between every season. It's a shame because the show is legitimately one of the best adult animated series ever, but we are only going to get 4 seasons in 9 years whereas most shows already jumped the shark and ran their course in similar time spans.

I get the sense McGruder isn't the type that likes working to another person's schedule or deadlines. I bet someone at Adult Swim told him, "If you're not going to be consistent in working on the show, just let other people do one more season to finish it."

I have heard this as well and he's not good with deadlines. That's great for him creatively, but it must make him a pain to work with. I hope he doesn't burn bridges, or The Boondocks will be his intro and swan song in the world of cartoon animation.

I really hate that he's doing the Black Jesus show. The YouTube version sucked, and I don't think that a bigger budget is going to help. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

That it has taken this long because of his creativity stalling is disappointing. I get having writer's block or whatever you'd call this but 4 years? It's time to either let someone else take over or cancel the series and stop pretending like you're going to have new episodes "soon" for over four years.

And to think I thought it was too long when it took Sherlock about three to finish, but it was well worth it and we knew the true reason behind the delay.

Yeah, someone also hijacked the Uncle Ruckus page as well. Have no clue what it really means either.

Or a publicity stunt for the upcoming season. Even if he's not in control it would not surprise me to find out this is all part of an attempt to publicize season 4.

FROM AARON MCGRUDER:

As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.

I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.

To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks - particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.

As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS.

Almost get the subtle hint that he's saying if season 4 doesn't hold up to expectations it isn't his fault.

He's probably somewhat bitter that Adult Swim likely forced a fourth season when he either didn't want to do it or was dragging his feet in getting it done.

His "Hollywood is a business" statement implies that there were decisions he didn't agree with that happened anyway.

"Don't hold grudges" implies the same thing but also that he's trying not to be resentful.

Overall he was probably screwed over but how much of that was his own fault for not keeping a tighter schedule we may never know.

I will say this. Regardless of any disputes, who owns what, or who is at fault, it must suck to see your creation go on without you at the helm.

I didn't realise he started the comic stip 2 decades ago. I imagine ending his work with The Boondocks in a negative way is more than enough reason to be bitter.

and people wonder why Bill Watterson didn't commercialize Calvin and Hobbes.

I'm going to have to block the knowledge of McGruder's non-involvement so I won't be extra critical.

The trailer looks like classic Boondocks.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the fourth season is a sucess and well received.
