The Dark Knight Rises The Box Office Thread

I miss the days when people only cared about a film's quality, instead of attaching their egos to its box office performance.

TDKR could be the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year for all I care, so long as I enjoy the film. Anyone who is seriously this invested in box-office success that they need "their" film to perform better than another one should be ashamed of themselves.

Are you referring to this entire thread, or just one particular user on this page?

The film could rake in 400 million WW and I wouldn't care less. All I want is for Nolan to give us (fans) a praiseworthy movie for the ages. A work of art, not money. And I'm confident that he'll deliver. It's never been about making a billion, it's about giving a wounded and loyal fanbase the franchise it deserves after eight years of darkness and humiliation.

People like MovieWorldExpress on YT are pretty pathetic trying to use The Avengers B.O. numbers to antagonize the Nolan-Batfans. It's morons like him who worsen the whole stupid rivalry.

Holy hell though, I'm really glad I believe the opposite of everything he says is true. He's an embarrassment to nerds and fanboys everywhere, I don't care what you're a fan of.

I dont disagree with your point ,
But ,ALL films are works of art .
Technically, at least .
And I would also add that from my perspective ,
Nolans Bat films are not just for Bat fans ,
They are for EVERYBODY, CBM fans and non fans alike.
And I think that the record breaking box office of these films proves that I am not the only one that views it that way .

It just kind of feels that everyone who wanted to see Avengers this weekend saw it.

I don't think so. I still keep seeing reports for Sunday of people getting turned away because showings were sold out everywhere and up to the end of the night.

That was your first mistake. :funny:

Like any troll, he's a sad, lonely man starved for attention. I'm sure even Avengers/Marvel fans are embarrassed for him.

It just kind of feels that everyone who wanted to see Avengers this weekend saw it. I don't see 700 domestically. Even if the competition is bad, May's always a crowded month, meaning no matter what, it'll lose screens. I mean, it's losing IMAX to Dark Shadows this weekend.

You'd be in a rude awakening this weekend. And no, it won't make 700million domestic. But 600 million is a possibility.

everyone cares about the quality, some just find the business side interesting too.

another note- tdk did 22.5m admissions on only 9,300 screens. That translates to 2.4 million people per screen! That's amazing. Avengers, on the other hand, at 22.5 / 11.8k screens, fails to top 2 million. Wow, 158 on 9,300 screens. Imagine how much more it could have done if it had 11,600 ala Pirates 3. If no other stat says TDKR can increase significantly upon TDK's opening weekend admissions, it' s that one. It is legit going to see a 30% increase in screen count. That is an enormous boost to it's potential ceiling.

After a glance @ the midnights thread - think we look for roughly 4,000 theaters to hold midnight showings, TDKR only needs a 10k average to break 40 million. Thats a slight increase over twilight, and 2k below HP8. Fo sho doable.

TDK dailies inflate to:
fri: 56 (minus midnights), sat 53, sun 49.
that is 158 million. Say TDKR simply matches that.
Add in 40 million in midnights, youre at 198.

factoring in a 30% in screen count over the count that got that ^^^ gross. It's obvious TDKR has a looooot of room grow. It's PSA in 2008 was 17k. Inflates to 19k. On 12,00 screens, that 19k means roughly 230 million.

TDKR topping 207 is not impossible, in fact it probably likely, if it can secure a theater count as large as Avengers. Regardless fo

Forecasting box office numbers and caring that YOUR movie makes more money than the next is taking geekdom to a whole new level. :o

Nobody cared who he was.
He's broken the Bat.
And now he's going to break the box office.
He is Bane.

It's very sad. It annoys me when people say that a movie is good because it made a lot of money in the box office. That is not always true due to a movie like Spiderman 3. What also annoys me is when some people say that TDKR will be another Spiderman 3. I'm sure some of them are marvel fans and they wouldn't say that when Iron Man 3 or Avengers 3 comes out in the future. I think some people want TDKR to fail period. Why can't we all just acknowledge the fact this is a great summer of movies? The Avengers was awesome, but I am not going to jump on the hate the Batman bandwagon.

I'm sticking to the opinion of NolanFans.com, and that's this:

The Avengers is just a preview as of right now.
TDKR is going to smash records like nothing we've seen before.

I don't know why I feel this way, but I just feel like it's coming.

And I'll say this: I don't know WHY it's going to be magical, but the #1 thing that will make it as special as I presume it will be will be its STORY, and that story is going to blow peoples' minds and surprise the hell out of the planet.... easily more than The Avengers did.

I tend to agree. Records are made to be broken, ESPECIALLY opening weekend records.

This could merely be setting the tone for the biggest superhero summer of all time. We simply don't know yet. This has established that America is still willing to come out in droves for a big superhero film.

The Mayans predicted this movies BO already, it'll be #1 every weekend until December and then the world will collapse because it wont be able to handle it. Obviously this hurts TDKRs Oscar chances too :o

I agree wholeheartedly. The only people who should be that concerned with a film's box office take are those who wrote, directed, starred in, or produced it (as well as the studio's shareholders). If you don't fall into any of those categories, your earnings fixation just makes you look bizarre and pathetic.

Yeah because Nolan fans never tried to shove the B.O. of TDK in the face of Marvel fans. :o

There's blood on both sides of the fence, I'm not defending what anyone said here. However there have been plenty of people that have said 1.) Avengers wouldn't break the record 2.) that Avengers had no chance of being larger than TDKR and 3.) Avengers would only beat TDK because of inflation and 3D.

Well now we know all three of those are untrue, and now the people who initiated the flame war are acting like this is no big deal.

It's a big deal when a movie breaks a record like this. It was a big deal for Spider-man, POTC, Spider-man3 and TDK, and now for Avengers.

It's like sports fans, and people treat that as pretty normal. :oldrazz:

Avengers isn't good, just because it made money. It's good because it's a damn good film, and the critics reviews were out before it ever broke any domestic records.

I agree TDKR isn't necessarily going to be Spider-man 3. I don't think there is a 3rd movie "curse" either. Spider-man 3 and X3 were not as good as the previous installments, but they are lightyears better than Superman 3 and Batman Forever. I don't need to see TDK to know it will be better than those two movies, and hopefully it will be better than SM3 and X3 as well.

My bad, let me rephrase that. I definitely agree that The Avengers was a damn good film. I definitely expected it to be that way. But some people try hard to prove that it is by stating how much money it has been making instead of simply stating the pros of the film itself. The Dark Knight Rises will be awesome as well, but some people expect it to fail critically and financially so The Avengers can stay on top. I just want both films to be an equal critical success. I don't really care if one film makes more than the other as long as the amount exceeds the budget of each one.

Hey , I want a great story out of TDKR too,
But, there is no reason to take a jab at The Avengers at the same time .
