he works better if he's your average, almost boyish looking guy. we can relate to him more that way.

You know what? It's irrelevant. Raimi stated that Bryce was chosen first for her acting ability, and making her look like Gwen Stacy came next. The important part is that she's a very talented actress who plays the character well. Being attractive (to what degree is a matter of opinion) is just a bonus.
