I agree that she's gorgeous either way, but I can understand why they gave her so much makeup for this. I believe she naturally has freckles, which go well with red hair, but not so well with the platinum blonde look they're going for.

I remember when Lady in the Water came out, people were saying she looked "nasty" or somesuch things. I thought she was even beautiful in that, though haunting.
