The Community Forum is Dying

Thats why the community forum isn't for you. You can go back now.

It's a double edge sword. On one hand there's too many people and tastes to have just 1 general hotties thread, but there's too many celebrities to have a separate thread for each of them.

I love Olivia Munn. But now that's she's off ATOS, I'm not going to create a new thread for her.
The entire celebrities forum can be summed up into 3 threads: male hotties, female hotties, and celeb news. The entire books and music forum can be one thread each. Politics and Tech help really still need their own forum imo. Then of course merge back the diner as well.

Community isn't dying. In my near 11 years on the Hype, I've noticed that threads like this pop up from time to time. I can also tell you that it is just a slow period. Its happened before. Not much has happened in the superhero movie front since TDK. With three major releases this year and three next year, we'll see a big revival around May, we'll get some newbies, some old faces will pop back up and a new cycle will begin. Eventually another down period will begin and we'll have another thread like this.

I've been part of Community since I signed up and I never seen it this slow. The other day I even counted the number of new posts for half a day and it was 14 posts. However since this thread, it has seemed to picked up a bit.

Its happened before. It'll happen again. It is a slow period. Nothing more.

I think we could certainly merge most of the diner back, but close a few of their threads too, I mean theres one thats just people counting to 1000?

I think everyone has to appreciate the fact that all of us have gotten older, and certainly those of us who were here in '03/'04 are probably all out of college now. Have been for quite some time. I joined here nearly 7 years ago, that's a long time. The things many of us found funny, and the senses of humor we had back then have changed. I honestly don't think I'd find something like GR87 as amusing now as I did then. I remember back in the old "Hype" we once derailed a thread by seeing how long we could talk about Asian Transexual hookers before the mods caught on, which again, is something I wouldn't do now. I also wouldn't stay up until the wee hours of the night on a weekday when there is nothing to do frivolously posting away. I think some of us have to acknowledge that we have changed and it's influenced the tenor of the site.

Correct. But before you guys, there was an even older guard. The likes of Cyclops, Green Goblin, Scarlet Spidey, Dew, Lizard, TMOB, Kevin Roegele, and myself stayed up until 4 a.m. busting Bakerboy's balls. But, as some of us outgrew the site, the new guard came in. Now they have become the old guard who are leaving and a new generation, drawn to the site by Thor, Cap, GL, Spider-Man 2012, Superman 2012, and DKR will take over.

Was he the one obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer? Anyones, this kind of furthers my point. The old-old guard grew out of that behavior too, long before we did.

I can still rail on someone if they are just asking for it. However the days of ripping on say a Bakerboy or a Ghostrider87 are a thing of the past.

This is where the real issue is for people who claim Community is dying. I think they just miss all the old posters who used to come here. Ones that have been banned, or left because some of their friends got banned. I do miss some of them, but certain others I'm glad are gone.

I wonder sometimes if I don't notice people like GR87, JAL or Bakerboy anymore. My roommates say I'm very easy going, and I have developed a mind my own business mentality. I'll let myself engage in certain meaningless arguments on this site about NFL or some comic character, but for the most part I'm not looking to rail on a probably mentally handicapped poster. So I can't fully say that GR87(s) aren't here, or if it's just me not looking for it anymore.

Yeah, I agree that's part of it. Certainly the old posters knew each other a lot more intimately and almost played off each other creating a lot of banter which probably seemed inaccessible to others

It's been a slow period for pretty long now...over a year.

The hype is growing but this place is decreasing. That usually means something is wrong.

He was indeed.

Exactly, its not that the Hype is dying. It is that people fear their relevance to the Hype is dying. Take our good friend Jag, for example. If he returned to the Hype today, many people would not know who the **** he is. People fear that is happening to them as their friends leave or are banned. However, if we just accept that the Hype is ever evolving, and can still continue to be a pleasant experience. I'd take Kane, for example, over many of the LSP posters who are now banned.

They're still here. Go down to the Batman or Spider-Man forums and you'll find them. ;)

Give it time, Chase. Its a slow period for Community. It happens. It'll revitalize in due time. What will likely happen is, the next two years will see a huge increase of newbies in the comic movie forums such as DKR and Spider-Man. This will lead to the old newbies of those forums, who have dominated the discussion since TDK and Spider-Man 3, becoming frustrated and they will turn to Community. Just like that, there will be a revival.

Merging the Diner back in here would be counter-productive; it'd annoy people to have to search through all the spam games to find a legit thread to participate in. So I don't foresee that happening, and if it is an option that will be discussed in the Mod Forum, I'll fight my ass off against it. Because, as I've said before, I want what's best for Community.

We should have a news forum because I am tired of all these dumb news stories popping up in here and crowding the place.

With more superhero movies on the horizon, I think the Hype will get more new posters in the near future, which is important to keep Hype going long-term. I don't think it's gloom-and-doom like some of you think, heck I still remember the forum getting bogged down when TDK was released not long ago. The Hype will be fine.
