The Disney owns Fox thread

I guess I misread your intentions then. My bad.

At least there is a confirmation on that finally.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the studio won’t interfere when it comes to the R rated properties they will gain as part of the 20th Century Fox acquisition.

Speaking about the nature of the studio opening these types of movies after the acquisition has gone through (via Coming Soon, Iger says the success of the “Deadpool” films are a great example and: “We’re going to continue in that business, and there might be room for more of that.”

Iger adds they will have to be careful in their branding of the films, and make sure they are properly marketed as being R.

They'd be stupid to give up on making R-rated movies. Just keep them as "Fox" movies like they said.

Duh. Anyone who believed otherwise is a huge moron. Sorry but it's the truth.

It's Disney and they aren't above pulling their weight so it wasn't moronic for some people to believe they actually would sanitize their new purchase.

Elizabeth Gabler’s Fox 2000 To Shutter As Disney Takes Over

In a surprise move, sources said that Disney will be shuttering the Fox 2000 label run by Elizabeth Gabler. It was believed that Gabler, who made a slew of mid-budget elegant tastemaker films, would continue to lead the executive team who make up her label. , but sources said that isn’t going to be the case. It remains unclear if Gabler will become a producer, but sources said that division will cease after Woman in the Window, the Joe Write-directed thriller that stars Amy Adams and Gary Oldman.

Gabler’s division would seem a strong fit for a hybrid making pictures for theatrical and streaming. Her highlights include Hidden Figures, The Fault In Our Stars, Marley & Me, Love, Simon and The Hate U Give.

I imagine Fox Searchlight will be taking over.

Disney already cutting the fat from their new steak.

Just read the first few pages of comments for fun...according to some, the movie industry will crumble since this deal has finalized. :funny:

I wonder how any peoples' opinions have changed since 2017.

It's going to set off a wave of studio consolidation like the airline industry did a decade ago. Less competition, less riskier projects that can pay dividends for the right studio...

It's good that Disney won't discontinue the Fox brand completely, but the fact they're cutting people now (and dropping Fox 2000 when they said they wouldn't pre-merger close) doesn't bode well for the number of Fox-branded output after 2020.

They'll be making just as much projects when you factor in streaming content under the Fox brand, less for theaters. But that's why they paid 71 billion, not to just cut 6-8 theatrical releases per year.

It doesn't surprise me one bit. The only surprise was how quickly they announced it. I thought they would take at least a month or two to "evaluate" before chopping parts off.

All those people who thought this was a good idea probably still won't care though. They got what they wanted, cost be damned.

What is exactly the difference between 20th Century Fox and Fox 2000? I thought it was weird when I saw "Fox 2000" in the opening credits but they don't show the fox 2000 logo at the start of the film. I guess its a division making films targeted for female audience. 20th Century Fox would just have to absorb whatever Fox 2000 was/is doing especially the Marvel ips fox had is now under Marvel Stud10s.

Not for girls per se but a lot of YA adaptations.

On second thought....

Disney already cutting the fat from their new steak.

Yep, fat that includes making mid-budget (therefore higher than most Fox Searchlight fare) films that appeal to more than just fanboys like Life of Pi, Hidden Figures, Fight Club back in the day, or recently Love, Simon and The Hate U Give.

Sorry, this leaves a bad taste of fat or otherwise. The writing is on the wall that they're going to kill Fox's mid-budget productions for adults like they did for themselves when they more or less shuttered Touchstone Pictures. My real question mark is what they do with Fox Searchlight. Or perhaps more apt, when they do in Fox Searchlight. It won't be this year.

Disney has no incentive to make mid budget dramas which is basically what Fox Searchlight does. Disney would rather produce a 100m budgeted blockbuster than 3 30m budgeted drama/rom-com/comedies. There's more money to be made through toys, merch, ancillary sales, theme parks, rides etc off of a blockbuster. They can monetize the big budget movies for years using different avenues. They can't do that with smaller films. So a single 100m budget movie doing well is preferable to 3 30m budget films doing well. Since the latter barely contributes to the overall bottom line. Disney probably sees these mid budget movies as a hindrance to the bottom line so they've stopped doing them altogether. So it'll be very interesting to see what Disney does with Fox Searchlight.

0k, I would hafta replace Fox Searchlight with Fox 2000 but y'all get the drift. This decision just makes sense to me. I don't hafta like it but the logic is there.

Been on the same page this whole time. And I too still worry about Fox Searchlight. I think the outcry in the press would be too bad if they just shuttered them this week like Fox 2000... but give Disney a year or maybe two as folks get used to Fox just being a label for R-rated franchises, and then maybe Disney does this again well before the next awards season. It's going to happen.

My real question mark is what they do with Fox Searchlight.

I think having both Fox 2000 & FSL was redundant to the Disney top brass. They'll keep FSL running for nao since the prestige movies from FSL will be their ticket to top prizes come awards season.

But Disney will probably do some re-structuring/re-configuring in the future.

Disney do have the incentive to keep at-least one of the adult oriented studios running since it'll provide content for Hulu.

I keep wondering what's up with Blue Sky Studios now. Do they keep doing animated flicks under the Fox banner?
