Is it because of the date that this hit theaters that the opening BO for the movie was lower?

I know it pretty much hit the forecast.

It came out around the same time as the first one did, and that one was going against Scott Pilgrim, and Eat Pray Love.

Maybe it just needed some more word of mouth.

So, is it better than the first one?

I don't know if the first one was actually competing with those two movies, though. Maybe Scott Pilgrim (which I didn't see until dvd, and LOVED), but not Eat Pray Love. It did have The Other Guys come out the week before and Inception out a few weeks before, so those were probably still making some money that could've gone to Expendables. Part 2, though, had Bourne Legacy come out just a week before, which is a huge action franchise, so people waiting until week 2 to see that might have taken away some BO. Who knows.

right now, it says that the 4-day BO is $7 million behind the original. I am hoping that positive word of mouth and repeat customers can help cover that gap (even though I can't afford to go more than once). We shall see.
I hope so too. I just find it strange that the numbers are lower than the first movie, but it hit the target that was forecast.

I'm also a little surprised at the BO numbers. I would have thought the movie would have exceeded expectations. Hopefully the positive word of mouth will get people out to this movie.

It came out back to school weekend for half of the country. People during opening weekend were probably more focused on school then a movie with a bunch of old guys kicking ass. Give it time

Not really. He just shows up and kicks butt.

The film is honestly not all that far from a pg13. The violence was pretty comic-y. And honestly i was surprised at how non-gory it was. Even seeing someone get pushed into the propeller of a helicopter wasnt as bad as i wouldve thought. And I dont think there were any f-words.
In a way this shows how much movies have changed, I was watching Rambo First Blood pt.2 and Rambo 3 both rated-R and considered violent for their time but they seem pretty tame, sure people get shot but there's hardly any blood to be seen and only one F-bomb in each movie.

Now compare that to Rambo from 2008 where CGI blood and guts are in abundance.

yeah, lots of meat-grinding scenes in that one...

Was that really all Stallone's doing or did Lionsgate have a hand in it?

Just got back, it was ****ING AWESOME! So entertaining and miles better than the first one! Hilariously funny, very violent and great character moments (of the few there is).
This.
Is.
An.
Action movie.

We've seen that match up already. He lost.

Granted, Stallone had to shoot him but still...

:p

Finally saw it today. I've said it, and will eat crow on this one.

This was fun. It's like the 1980s all over again.... just a bloody, fun, and silly film. If they can make a third movie as fun as this, I'd gladly welcome a sequel with open arms and guns a-blazin'.

Here's something I just remembered--When Church meets Barney in the plane for the first time, Barney asks Church who exactly he's working for and Church tells him not to worry about it.

Common sense would dictate that he's referring to the CIA but that whole exchange made it seem like he may be working with someone else as well?

Curious...

Not that I've seen EX2, but in the first the CIA was never actually mentioned between Barney and Church. Barney asking him who he's working for just seems like an attempt to suss out whether his information is correct (Remember him pulling up Church's picture on the laptop in the first?).

I don't remember that whole scene from part one but I do remember as they were looking up information on Church, Jet Li going:

"So...we're working for 'The Agency'."

But if we were to assume it isn't the CIA, it'd be pretty bad ass if we found out Church was working for some other organization.

Perhaps run by Clint Eastwood? Hmm...

E2 was so stupid it was brilliant. The lines were so cheesy, only a genius could think of that. "Your ego is as big as a big dinosaur" was amazing for instance. The first scene was really fun. The movie itself is the kind of bad movie that is good because of how dumb it is. It's not as boring as the first one. But it needed to have more fights. I can't think that someone is badass only because he uses a machinegun and he screams at the same time. Chuch, Arnold and Bruce didn't seem badass to me. not to mention the gunfights were really lame and disappointing. Chuch was funny though.
Statham had the best fight scenes of the movie, but his duel against adkins was a letdown, because of the editing. The editing was better than in E1 though. Van Damme was awesome, but he didn't get much to do, which is a shame. He did well in his fight, but the fight itself is nothing special.

I think most of the action was very generic, and that's a pity. E1's climax was better IMO.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed, because it was funny and I had a good time. It was better than E1 in almost every regards. But there is a lot more potential than that. Lundgren barely did a thing, and Couture should have at least a real fight, considering he's a beast.

In the end, I would say the movie itself is brilliant because of its dumbness (when Stallone tries to be serious, it becomes a masterpiece), but the action is mostly a letdown, save for the opening scene, and statham's fights, which were good.

Yeah it did sound like Mr. Chuch was working for another group as well as the CIA in EX2.

I think a collaboration between both, remember Lionsgate also does the SAW films. I remember reading stuff here that this Rambo would be very brutal as seen in the red band trailer showing Rambo ripping a guys throat out.

but it WAS funny when Arnold told Bruce, "I'll be back" and Bruce replied, "you're ALWAYS coming back"...

and then Arnold retorts, "yippy-ki-yay"...

priceless...

For me that was one of the one liner moments that fell flat and came off as forced, awkward, cringeworthy. I saw this in a packed theater and NO ONE laughed or chuckled at that part, they laughed at a few other parts, but when it came to that part dead silence.

huh, that's weird, that DID get a laugh response where I saw it...

maybe your audience wasn't that hip to the Die Hard line... it HAS been a while for the Die Hards... maybe your audience had more of a younger crowd that just didn't get it......

Saw this movie for a second time yesterday afternoon. Liked it a lot more than I did the second time. But I got to thinking, action movies like Transformers, and Resident Evil get bashed to hell for having weak stories and crappy dialogue humor, no character development etc but the expendables movies get free passes because of the cast? Not saying the expendable movies are horrible (they are fun action movies), but the movies have an almost non existant story and cheesy sometimes cringe worthy dialogue (which is a throw back to the 80's/90's) and zero character development. Just wondering why this movie gets held to a different standard. Any other movie would get trashed on by critics and people the frequent message boards (like us lol). What gives?

It was a mixed crowd of young and old (I am 24 and got the references) but I just didn't find that particular exchange to be all that funny. To me it was just a forced bit trying to be funny and provide fan service but fell flat.

Because it does its thing better than those two franchises.
