When I was working as a cashier at Kroger (and the bagger..and the cart pusher....and well, everything) I only took a small test that came with the instructional video. It wasn't anything big, just a few questions about dealing with the customers. The managers usually do the hands on training for the cashier job.

It was kinda like Starbucks, over 100 people turned up for 8 job's (it was a 'open casting call') i personally think they were just finding excuses to pick as many people off as possible.
