Slumdog Wins First Major Award

The National Board of Review, which launches the movie awards season each year, named Fox Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire best film of the year Thursday. The Danny Boyle film, about a poor boy, played by newcomer Dev Patel, who emerges from the slums of Mumbai to become wealthy, thanks to India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, is regarded as a top contender in the Oscar derby. Patel also won for best breakthrough performance by an actor. Boyle, however, was passed over for the best director award, which went to David Fincher for his The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Clint Eastwood took the best actor award for his performance in Gran Torino, and Anne Hathaway, the best actress award for Rachel Getting Married. The National Board of Review is composed of film historians, students and academics. Its awards will be presented in New York on January 14.

Anybody that's laughing at Downey Jr's chance of getting nominated at this point is delusional.

At this point, I think "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire" have better shots at winning the Best Picture Oscar than "The Dark Knight" does. Sure, I'd love to see "The Dark Knight" win, but I'm just being realistic. I think that the biggest award TDK will walk away with will be the Supporting Actor award for Heath Ledger.

I dont see any of them winning over Benjamin Button.

Yeah, I totally agree.

Have some of you already seen Benjamin Button ?

I just don't get all the buzz about Slumdog Millionaire

And TDK may very well win the Best Director award, if not the Best Picture.

It's your typical traditional Oscar film. The same exact thing we've seen a million times. :sleepy: I'm not judging the film itself, but just the darling that these film always are with the academy. It's time for change.

Obama should help TDK with it's Oscar chances.

"If America can change so can it's Oscar chances." :woot:

I think anyone laughing at anything's chances at this point is delusional. Oh and to cinemaman, have you seen slumdog? I havem't but plan to because I feel that if I'm gonna root for Dark Knight properly I should at least see Benjamin Button, Milk, and Slumdog Millionaire.

Benjamin Button looks great. Alot more interesting than Slumdog. Plus, it's David Fincher. The commercials are so well done and very touching.

LOL, I really hope Obama's ideas will spread out and reach the strict academy. I will really get pissed off, if they give the main award to Slumdog Millionaire.

Personally I find this all to be a bit silly since more than half of these films haven't been released yet, and what always happens is half of em aren't as good as proclaimed and then an unexpected Dark Horse comes up, blah blah... I'll just wait till the dust clears in January before I even talk about predictions :)

:yay:

I know. The academy can't just except that the best film of 2008 is a comic book film. :woot: Seriously, these traditional oscar films are getting boring and predictable. That's why the ratings are so low. People are sick of these films getting nominated. And TDK is just that gust of fresh air to move forward with change. If LOTR can do it, whay can't TDK?

Have you even seen Slumdog? Because you're pretty clearly talking out of your ass right now.

Buddy of mine...who is pretty into film saw Slumdog Millionaire and said it was fantastic. Easily one of the year's best. No doubt that will get a nomination.

Doubt is getting some mixed reviews from what I've read.

Slumdog Millionaire was an excellent film. And anyone who says it's Oscar bait not only has no idea what they're talking about, but they obviously haven't seen the film. It's way less conventional than TDK, especially in terms of narrative. It was also the better film by far.

Doubt is a hard sell, it has some powerhouse acting but also looks dreary and static.

From the trailer it looks about as appealing too me as sandpapering my nads, but I will check it out so we can debate it come Oscar time.

^that's a pretty good prediction cereal

thanks

I forgot about this one, but i would definitely included especially for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay
