The First Batch of Oscar Predictions

I can't see how people think that any other performance in "The Dark Knight" was greater than Ledger's. Sure, Oldman and Eckhart were awesome, but Heath brought it to the next level.

Also, I would get a kick out of Robert Downey Jr. getting a supporting actor nom for "Tropic Thunder", but we all know that won't happen.

As for Josh Brolin in "W", all the reviews say he's outstanding in it. I plan on seeing it this weekend, so I'll be able to judge for myself.

o...you mean the "I'm Oliver Stone and I'm going to display what a liberal d'bag I am by making a snarky film about an unpopular president"

It's really not that film though... Brolin won't get nominated for this though... no freaking way. I don't care how good the portrayal is.

why should somone get an an award for copying someone else?

if the portrayal is dead on, then I don't see why not....Jamie Foxx deserved his Oscar for 'Ray'....as for TDK...non comic book fans I know that saw it preferred Eckhardt over Ledger....and I highly doubt any members of the academy are serious comic book fans

Actually its more likely to happen, than not happen. Its a very weak year now when many of the possible nominees has been either moved to 09 or been confirmed lead. Comedic performances HAS been nominated. Kevin Kline bloody WON an oscar. It has actually become unlikely to NOT happen.

I disagree. He was like the 5th or 6th that year.

also depends on the scenes that they play. copying bush acting like an idiot in front of million of people is not oscar acting IMO. no matter if its spot on.

That's a ridiculous claim. Phillip Seymour Hoffman absolutely deserved the Oscar for playing Truman Capote, as did Helen Mirren for "The Queen".

Gotta disagree again. Prefered Heath and Judi. Though these wins doesnt bug me compared to other wins. Hoffman makes the best performance of the decade I dont give the win to.

They are only going 'ga-ga' because he's dead....that's it....I was not blown away by his Joker....

Well, not everybody likes everything. I personally respected Leger just because of everything he did in the role. Everything about him, from his tone of voice, movements, right down to the little ticks of his face and the way his eyes flicked around the room, were completely unlike any of his other performances.

He was not recognizable as Heath Ledger, or as any of the other characters he's portrayed. That's a good acting job.

I know that's why I respected the performance, and I also enjoyed it just as much as the first time I saw Jack Sparrow on screen, and if Depp can get a nomination for that, Heath deserves a nomination as well.

yeah heath when he was joker i only saw joker i never saw heath thats what i call great acting i haven't seen every movie this year but who else was good enough to get best supporting actor?

I love how some people think that because other people like something they dont, there must be some strange reason like 'no you people dont really like this actor'. How dumb can someone be when they cant even understand that different people have different opinions.
Oh no you dont really dislike Heath Ledger. You only dislike him because he's dead.

Well I know non comic book fans that preferred Ledger's performance over Eckhart's...there I just poked a huge hole in your logic.

That is a VERY good point.

So with Changeling being pretty much panned by critics, how does that change the race?

I didn't think anyone was paying attention to that movie.....Jeffrey Donovan needs to quit the BS and get back on 'Burn Notice'

There don't seem to be any heavy Oscar contneder this year. That's good because that means TDK can be nominated.

And regarding Ledger. He's one of my favorite actors. And not because he played The Joker. I've always loved his acting since I first saw him in The Patriot. And yeah, some people were gaga over him because he died (let's face it, it's one of the reasons for the film's huge success. I bet without him dying the film would of made 100 million less or so) But now that he's played The Joker, he has sold me even more of how much a fearless and capable actor he really is. He's not great because he just played The Joker. He's great because he was a fantastic actor to begin with.

Jolie is no longer as likely as she ones were. Now it even seems like she has a big chance of not getting a nomination. It chances for Pic/Dir is even lower(I never had much faith in it to be honest).

My question wasn't so much about Changeling's chances for nominations at this point, but how people who were predicting it to get picture, director, and actress nominations are changing their predictions? Jolie might still be nominated, as well as the D.P. It seemed that the movie was very-well shot, and I don't think people had an issue with her acting.

The big deal is that this leaves a void. A number of blogs I've been looking at in the past month or so were giving Changeling some consideration for best picture, so there's a void left there now. It's kind of hard to say at this point which movies might step up. I think Australia has Academy written all over it - it seems like it will have the one-two punch of ticket sales and critical acclaim. The smaller films like Milk, Frost/Nixon, and Revolutionary Road are all others that will have to have very strong critical success, because I don't see them making much money. A lot of people are throwing Benjamin Button out there, but I don't think it will do well enough critically to warrant a nomination. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention The Dark Knight. Given its financial success, backed with some of the best reviews for a blockbuster since The Departed and Casino Royale in 2006, I think it's the only lock for best picture at this point.

Ok, Jolie was my 2nd most likely, and she's now my 6th most likely. I wasnt predicting the movie before, but it was a possible alternative. Now I dont see it as a contender anymore.
