Did anyone not feel that the first time Superman rips his shirt in SR when he is goint to save Lois from the plane, was not shot very well?

it is one ofthose homages that singer didnt want so bad.

I never understood why it was so badly shot. It's one of Superman's trademarks.

The reason it wasn't shot very well is because the scene wasn't supposed to happen that way. The suit had to be CGI'ed in that shot because the original shot had Superman forgetting his suit in the janitors close.

No. What happened was after downing a bunch of beers and leaving Jimmy with the tab, Clark leaves to save the plane. He enters the alley and rips the shirt only to discover he doesn't have the suit on. He rushes back to the Daily Planet and changes in the closet, a shot of that can bee seen above courtesy of CGHulk. He then sneaks out of the closet behind a flock of Daily Planet employees and jumps out a window, shooting into the sky. After they decided to cut this sequence, they had to CGI the suit under the initial false shirt rip, in the process creating a rather anti-climactic moment.

So thats the reason that was so poorly shot. Nice to know.

^Unfortunately that was the case...and the shirt rip and Superman go hand in hand. It was very anti-climatic. It would have been cool to see a full shirt rip and then Superman actually discarding the rest of his disguise and flying off.

Thats right in the original version of this film, he had to make a choice whether the world needed him anymore as superman.. but when lois was in danger..for a man in love..there is no decision, just action.

What's right in the original? I am not following you.

That's supposed to be one of the great Superman trademarks and they made it about as exciting as opening a can of soup.

I really wish this was kept in the film. Clark sneaking out behind the Planet employees then jumping out the window would have been a nice throw back the Fleischer Superman cartoons.

At least he didn't vibrate his clothes off.

Oh well at least there is a reason for it being sooo poor!

I can't actually believe they didnt reshoot that scene, its one shot of Clark running round the corner, ripping open his shirt and straight into the camera!

A lack of respect for Superman if you ask me!

BS is a BUM!

I think if they had the type of shirt rip they had in SR in the sequel they could have gotten away w/ it coming off so casual but this is SUPERMANS RETURN to Earth, Metropolis, the WORLD! It should've been an iconic moment! To do a more dramatic shirt rip in SR w/ the Williams theme blaring, etc.

It should've been one of the defining moments of the movie...:csad:

yeah, missing out on this scene was a real mistake --- also, not building up the music like Williams did was also bad. You're absolutely right LostSon88, it should of been one of the defining moments. sigh -- i really like the movie but there are something that really irke me. (irke is my word of the day.)

All we know is this.

What is the context of this scene? Is he looking in a mirror contemplating the putting of the suit on or something? Can someone explain?

This shot was of Clark putting on the suit for the first time in years...it was the moment when he decides that its time for Superman to return.

Unfortunately, Singer decided to cut that entire subplot out of the movie...

You don't reshoot when you're in post production and editing the final film together.

I'm very glad he cut it out, mainly because Superman would never hesitate to save lives, I don't care how "confused" and "depressed" he is. I could buy him thinking about it on the farm where he isn't aware of any catastrophes but when he knows his lack of action could let people die, Superman will save the friggin day.

The issue Clark had as to whether or not he should return had moreso to do with him coming to the realization that the world has moved on without him and that in some respects it may be better that Superman NOT return. As Lois mentioned in her article, in some ways, having Superman around in the first place hindered the world by making them completely dependent on someone else to save them as opposed to trying to save themselves.

Its not that he didn't want to save lives, its that in the time he was gone the world had learned to rely on themselves and be completely independent...although they wearn't perfect, they were managing without him...does he really wanna screw that up?

That was his conflict.
