I just watched the Flashpoint Paradox DC animated film. I thought the Flash has the potential for amazing live action visuals. Can someone tell me why they are fans of the Flash as a character? What sets him apart from other heroes and what is his appeal other than his powers?
This is going to sound so corny, but the reason I like the Flash (specifically the Barry Allen version) is because I feel so much like him. He's kind of geeky in the sense that he cares about his work very much. He's a huge comics fan and bases his identity on the Flash in comic books within the DCU (before it was discovered that he existed in a parallel universe). He's got a strong sense of justice - described by Thawne (Professor Zoom) as "archaic". Yet, he sticks to them most of the time. The only time I can really think of where he compromised those values was when he killed Thawne as the villain tried to kill his fiance (he had killed his first wife earlier in the story). This moment of weakness reminded us that he is human and he is fallible.
Speaking of Thawne, his rivalry with the Reverse Flash is one of the coolest in comics. I personally think it's a more interesting relationship than that of Superman to Lex Luthor... I know, those are fighting words
The hatred that Professor Zoom develops for Flash stems from former idolization. He traveled back in time and suffered severe disappointment when his only aspiration in life was shattered. This drove him into madness and inspired him to perpetrate many horrible acts in Barry's life including killing his mother (a retcon introduced in the modern age, but it was a great retcon in my opinion).
And I know you said not to mention powers, but superspeed is one of the coolest superpowers in my opinion. It's so simplistic... someone describe it as almost "feral". A base part of our human nature to run (maybe it's evolutionary? I don't know). The ability to think fast and move fast is something I wish I could more so than fly or shoot lasers out of my eyes.
Last but not least, I like the dynamic that exists within the Flash family: the other three Flashes - Wally, Jay, and Bart, and the extended family of Max Mercury, Jesse Chambers, XS, and Wally's children are really awesome characters. Their love for each other and influence in each other's lives are plain to see and fun to read (check out Flash Rebirth or the latter portion of Wally's run as the Flash to see some of what I'm talking about. The Flash family is much, much more fun than the Bat family in my opinion).
A long winded response as usual, but I think it pretty much captures my feelings for why the Flash is the best superhero
