THE FLASH - 2016 can't get here fast enough!

Anyone else think they may bypass Barry altogether, saving him for the series and use Wally as their Flash for the big screen? Mind you, I don't support that myself but I'm just wondering...

Hopefully not. The only way I'd be cool with that is if they did a great TV show about Barry Allen that was really well done and well remembered and then years later did a movie but used the TV show as a loose basis, going off that as people's knowledge of The Flash for the background of the movie(s).

Actually truthfully it'd probably be better if they did it just the opposite as movies garner MUCH more attention than TV shows do and would help embed the character in the minds of the public and hopefully it'd be a really great film series....a trilogy, ideally...then years later they could do a TV show about Wally West that used the events of the Barry Allen movies as the background/basis. That'd be ideal if they were to go that way, IMO.

It wouldn't make any sense.

It worked in the DCAU because they wanted a Flash amalgamation character from the start (note that the plan was to have no Flash at all at the beginning, just Bart as Impulse. Later they decided against it and used Wally's Flash and connecting it to the Flash appearance in STAS). They wanted to craft a character that most kids would instantly identify with and gravitate towards. And since Wally was the Flash in the comics and most other media at that time anyway, they went with it.

But now, Barry is the Flash in comics, in games (Injustice, DC Universe Online, Infinite Crisis), and on the TV screen. Throwing Wally in out of nowhere would make about as much sense as making the JLU Flash Barry at that time. If anything, it'll be another Barry/Wally amalgamation with Barry's name.

But objectively (ignoring all of the outside-of-the-movies stuff), Barry is the best choice due to his origin and place in the DCU. He founded the original Justice League, he ushered in one of the most defining periods of DC Comics - the Silver Age. He's been on the forefront of every game changing event in DC history (Crisis on Infinite Earths, Final Crisis, Flashpoint, Trinity War...). He is also the first to debut the standard "Flash" costume that most people visualize when you mention "The Flash" (sorry Jay :/). He set the precedent for what the Flash mythos would be for years to come and continues to find reasonable success even in the reboot. With Wally, they'd likely end up including Barry somehow due to a) his origin not being possible without Barry (unless if they give him Barry's origin) and b) the big influence that the character had on his life.

Now, if they spun it in a similar way that Marvel is doing Ant Man with Scott Lang putting on the suit and Hank Pym being present in a mentor role for Wally as Lang and Barry as Pym, that might be interesting. But it could screw with the storyline that MoS has already set in motion. I think it'd be easier/make more sense to start things off with Barry and move to Wally down the road if they absolutely have to (but way down the road. Let's at least get two solid solo movies AND Justice League out of him first).

Even JL/JLU gave Wally Barry's origin, city, story, enemies, job, and status as Flash and was really only Wally in name and appearance - the personality they gave him was really a combination of Impulse's personify and their own thing, they played him as the dumber guy on the group and for jokes a lot of the time for the most part, and neither Barry or Wally (or any Flash really) were ever portrayed as idiotic as they made the JL/JLU Flash at times.

They've been pushing Hal/Barry the most in recent years

but I wouldn't be surprised if we got John/Wally.

While I prefer Hal and Barry (no way, right?) I'm ok with John and Wally on one condition: no Hawkgirl. Aquaman deserves that spot a whole lot more. To me, Hawkgirl is a boring character... she has a mace made of rare metal and hits people with it... big whoop.

Her comic origin is actually pretty cool, but that should be a dedicated movie or be the main plotline of the JL movie that she appears in.

But I'd prefer that they stick to the regular founders for the first movie. Even if it's the New 52 founders (the most likely scenario in my mind. I doubt we'll see Martian Manhunter - I'd be very surprised.)

^^^I'd rather they make Aquaman into a woman than give us Hawkgirl.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are so perfect for this movie, that WB would be stupid to not use them for this, or any DC projects. I've said it before, but I can see Disney talking to these guys for a Marvel film or even Star Wars.

It's just a matter of time.

well they scooped them up for Lego 2...so there's that

I don't understand the love for Disney, they are pretty successful commercially right now but this support existed even few years ago. Some years ago many fans were advocating that Superman property be sold off to Marvel / Disney.

Why people want Disney everywhere, just because they own Marvel ?

How likely is a Flash film now that they're trying to get the show off the ground?

I don't think that WB are planning for any solo Superhero movies anytime soon, Batman Vs Superman would most likely be followed by another team-up movie (Justice League ?).

Chances that Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman and Green Lantern will get a solo movie are very slim. Only Batman has a chance.

Not to say DC must follow the Marvel method, but I am a guy who likes variety. I really wish DC would give us more than Batman/Superman films. I want to see Wonder Woman, Flash, etc thrive in their own environment. Just make them better than Green Lantern, and I'm sure they'd be hits.

Agreed, it's time to make some sort of road-map of how to utilize their other properties, get somebody who is interested and talented for the projects.

for what it's worth Gal Gadot said she is contracted for a solo WW film after JL...I imagine if she is contracted for a solo film so is Ben.

I think that we'll at least get solo films for Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. Flash may just be in JL and a different version will be on TV, and as far as GL goes, if Dwayne Johnson is GL, i'm sure there will be another movie.

I would imagine Henry has some more solo films left in his contract somewhere. They'd be crazy NOT to sign him on for another Superman adventure if BvS and Justice League really take off.

As for Flash, he certainly won't be getting a 2016 film. Beyond that is still a mystery as well. If the TV show does really well (like Arrow's level of popularity or beyond) I feel like they'll be more keen to try out a big screen adaptation. But at the same time, if the TV show is really good, they might just leave him to TV so avoid over saturating things with Flash.

I just watched the Flashpoint Paradox DC animated film. I thought the Flash has the potential for amazing live action visuals. Can someone tell me why they are fans of the Flash as a character? What sets him apart from other heroes and what is his appeal other than his powers?

For me, Flash has two huge things going for him: One, he's about as simple and straightforward as heroes get. Two, his rogues gallery is simply awesome, and not just their powers or costumes, but the character development his villains get is peerless. They've just great characters.

This is going to sound so corny, but the reason I like the Flash (specifically the Barry Allen version) is because I feel so much like him. He's kind of geeky in the sense that he cares about his work very much. He's a huge comics fan and bases his identity on the Flash in comic books within the DCU (before it was discovered that he existed in a parallel universe). He's got a strong sense of justice - described by Thawne (Professor Zoom) as "archaic". Yet, he sticks to them most of the time. The only time I can really think of where he compromised those values was when he killed Thawne as the villain tried to kill his fiance (he had killed his first wife earlier in the story). This moment of weakness reminded us that he is human and he is fallible.

Speaking of Thawne, his rivalry with the Reverse Flash is one of the coolest in comics. I personally think it's a more interesting relationship than that of Superman to Lex Luthor... I know, those are fighting words :oldrazz:

The hatred that Professor Zoom develops for Flash stems from former idolization. He traveled back in time and suffered severe disappointment when his only aspiration in life was shattered. This drove him into madness and inspired him to perpetrate many horrible acts in Barry's life including killing his mother (a retcon introduced in the modern age, but it was a great retcon in my opinion).

And I know you said not to mention powers, but superspeed is one of the coolest superpowers in my opinion. It's so simplistic... someone describe it as almost "feral". A base part of our human nature to run (maybe it's evolutionary? I don't know). The ability to think fast and move fast is something I wish I could more so than fly or shoot lasers out of my eyes.

Last but not least, I like the dynamic that exists within the Flash family: the other three Flashes - Wally, Jay, and Bart, and the extended family of Max Mercury, Jesse Chambers, XS, and Wally's children are really awesome characters. Their love for each other and influence in each other's lives are plain to see and fun to read (check out Flash Rebirth or the latter portion of Wally's run as the Flash to see some of what I'm talking about. The Flash family is much, much more fun than the Bat family in my opinion).

A long winded response as usual, but I think it pretty much captures my feelings for why the Flash is the best superhero :woot:

You're not the only getting tired of DC only doing Superman and Batman

After getting burned and burned and burned by movies like Catwoman, Jonah Hex, and Green Lantern, I can't pretend that I don't know why they stick to the safe bets.

But the commissioning of the Wonder Woman solo movie gives me a little hope :J
