The Format War

I don't see how buying up so many HD DVDs is a dangerous thing at all. Like already mentioned, it's not like my HD DVDs are suddenly going to stop working if Blu-ray were to win. And secondly, the chances of dual-format players becoming the norm are much higher than Blu-ray only drives (or even HD DVD only drives) becoming the norm in the end. And in that case I'd still be able to play all of them on the newer players, too.

I'm simply choosing to be an early adopter of a format that I choose as my choice for best overall product. If everyone were in the frame of mind as some of you with the wait-and-see approach to this, neither format is ever going to take off. It's up to the early adopters to help sway things one way or another.

And really, it's not like I'm putting that much more money into each HD DVD as I am standard DVD. Only 5 of my 20 HD DVDs have I already owned on standard DVD, and the difference in picture quality and extras is more than worth the few extra bucks, IMO.

That's why I'm holding back a bit on BR movies. Even though I think it'll win, I'm still not buying a ton of movies for it. The only movies I buy for BR are the ones I reaaallly think will benefit from HD. The normal movies I buy that are more impulse, or not something I really wanted I'll just buy on DVD. The movies that I've been waiting for, like let's say Spiderman 3 when it comes out I'll buy on BR. After a clear winner is known I'll start buying more BR's. Until then I'm not planning on building a huge collection, or replacing any of my DVD's.

It's not dangerous, as has been said they will still work even if HD-DVD stops. It's just with me I like to have one player. I have a VCR/DVD combo to save space because I don't like that much clutter around my TV. If HD stopped, and you adopted BR then you'd have both players setting around, and two sets of movies on top of your DVD's, and so on. I think it's just personal choice of not wanting to have tons of similar things setting around.

I believe Blu-Ray will win but I as well am just buying movies special to me for the time being. So far all I own is The Prestige, but Casino Royale and Rocky Balboa will be the next two.

Yes, but read my post again.

If Blu-ray takes over, I could just get a combo player that will play my old HD DVDs along with my new Blu-rays in the same player. So I would not need to rebuy my HD DVDs on Blu-ray.

Also, besides color, the cases for HD DVD and Blu-ray are exactly the same, so it's not like it'll be very noticable that there are would be two formats of discs on my shelf.

Yeah, you can do that. Aren't the combo players still like 1k though? I guess the price will go down on them. Personally I don't care, I mean I don't want anyone to get stuck with whatever format loses. It's just a personal thing, someone could have 50 players and it would be no ones buisness. It's just that I personally don't like the thought of having to juggle players and my space around to make it all fit, or pay more to get a new player.

I would like to say that Sony screwed the pooch with Casino Royale on blu-ray. This is only the 2nd title I've bought for it (mainly hd-dvd supporter, ps3 owner, only other blu-ray title is black hawk down), and this is FAR from a demo disk. Good God, the softness of some scenes amazes me. I can't say which scene since it gives away a spoiler towards the end, but at an outdoor, daylight locale shortly before the climax of the film, there's a shot of the trees and mountains against the sunset, and it's soft as hell. There's minor artifacting in the early stages of the Freerunning pursuit, and there's image softness on the lights in the backdrop of Miami on the way to the airport. Overall, this is NOT a disk I will be using to show off blu-ray. I don't know what the deal is, but you would expect Sony's biggest title on blu-ray this year short of Spider-Man 3 would be perfected into a Tier 0 title. This barely qualifies as a tier 1 title.

And whats worse, the effing thing cost 30 bucks. And the blu-ray camp calls hd-dvd's expensive...

Who calls HD DVDs expensive? That's odd SpiderFan because most sights gave Casino Royale a great review on Blu-Ray especially the video aspect

Head over to any audio/video forum, and all the blu-ray camp does is say "HD-DVD is really expensive, and now that its going combo its gonna be more expensive!".

I'm not saying the video is awful, but I'm saying that for this being the biggest blu-ray release this year BY the company who made the format, I would expect nothing less than a Tier 0 (flawless) title, or at least a very high end Tier 1 title. The problem is that this was filmed digitally, so it's obviously a problem with the way it was encoded. It's annoying that painstaking detail wasnt paid attention to in this release. For a review that echoes what I'm talking about, head over to High Def Digest and read the video portion of the casino royale review. It sees the same softness I am talking about.

Overall, my gripe is that Casino Royale, a movie filmed last year in digital, should not look worse than Black Hawk Down, a movie filmed several years ago on film.

The HD DVD format gets a major boost May 22 when Warner Home Video releases The Ultimate Matrix Collection and The Complete Matrix Trilogy for $119.99 and $99.99, respectively.

The special editions, which include HD DVD releases of The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, collectively comprise 8 discs and more than 35 hours of bonus material, in addition to three “Revisited” mini-features.

Both releases include HD DVD’s In-Movie Experience (IME) interactive feature.

The Matrix trilogy stars truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) battling human-killing machines in a post-apocalyptic world.

The Matrix — released 12 times on DVD — was the first disc to sell 1 million units and has generated $1 billion in worldwide revenue since its 1999 theatrical release, according to WHV.

The studio plans to release “Matrix” titles on Blu-ray Disc later this year.

Right, and? No one is denying an HD DVD player is cheaper, oh and you forgot the 20GB PS3 ;)

Yes, they've been dropping them from stores because they don't sell as well as the 60gb and they loose more for Sony but they're still currently available online and probably will be for awhile. You can add the $200 XBOX360 HD DVD player, just make sure you list it with at least $300 more for the core 360

Fixed ;)

And I left out the PS3 like I did the $200 XBOX360 HD DVD player.

There's no reason not to include it. It's not like it's an add on, it's a fully functional Blu Ray player.

Matrix stuff

Ugh, I wish they'd just offer the first movie as a standalone.

Can someone explain to me why GameStop has Casino Royale Blu-ray only worth eighty cents? :o

In other news, Rocky is out.

The only thing that interest me about the ps3 is its cheap BR player. It looks like its going to win.

Watched Rocky Balboa on dvd. It was pretty awful and boring. But imdaly you are comparing prices and that is all good but hasn't HD been around longer therefore explaining its overall lower priced players?

yes and it's cheaper to produce. Sorry you didn't dig Balboa, I was on the edge of my seat for that fight.

When HD DVD debuted in April last year, it's player, the HD-A1 was $499.99. When Blu-ray debuted in June last year (2 months later), it's player, the BDP-1000 was $999.99. HD DVD is not lower priced because it's older, it's lower-priced because it's cheaper to make.

And here's the official press release for The Matrix HD DVD boxsets!

Burbank, California (March 22, 2007) -- If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers’ post-modern epic films. This collection will contain, for the first time, all three HD DVD versions of The Matrix series with more than 35 hours of bonus material in 5 double sided discs. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Films
The Matrix (1999)
The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), “No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.” The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.
The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie’s breakthrough concepts.

In the powerful second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) lead the revolt against the Machine Army as it attacks Zion, the last human city on earth, unleashing their arsenal of extraordinary skills and weaponry against the systematic forces of repression and exploitation. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo’s pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

What is The Matrix? The question is not yet fully answered. And it leads to another: Who created The Matrix? The answers lead to more worlds of bold possibility – and to a destiny that passes from revelations to Revolutions.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
In the powerful final chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves) takes another step forward in the quest for truth that began with his journey into the real world at the outset of The Matrix – but that transformation has left him drained of his power, adrift in a no-man’s land between the Matrix and the Machine World. While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo’s comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life’s worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel’s long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense – but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?
