The Format War

The Incredible Hulk has amazing detail! Seriously, awesome!

Yeah well I have never been into that Pixar/Disney animation stuff for the most part but I have seen a little of Cars on Blu-ray and I would say just from what I saw I would HIGHLY recommend it if you're a fan of those films. Also I hear Ratatouille is a 5 star disc.

The Dark Knight's IMAX scenes are just amazing looking and the TrueHD kicks ass. Cloverfield looks awesome and the sound is just AMAZING on that disc if you like giving your subwoofer a workout. Ummmm and if you're looking for a comedy I highly recommend Superbad not only did I think it was hilarious but it really does look great.

Cloverfield definitely gives the subwoofer a workout. I have a bar in my basement and the glasses rattle and the upstairs shake whenever I have cloverfield in. Definitely one to show off the sound system.

MGM Announces May Titles: Fargo, Bond, & The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
In an early announcement to retailers, MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced an onslaught of classic catalog titles for release on Blu-ray this May. On May 12th, they will release 'Fargo', 'Force 10 From Navarone', 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly', the James Bond film 'License to Kill', and 'The Man with the Golden Gun'.

The following week, on May 19th, they will release the 2007 release 'Lions for Lambs' on Blu-ray.

Technical specs have only been revealed for some of the titles, but you can expect to see 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all the releases. Special features have not been announced at this time, though we expect them to start trickling in later today.

The Reader Coming to Blu-ray
The Weinstein Company has announced that they will bring 'The Reader' to Blu-ray on April 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This is the film that recently netted Kate Winslet the Academy Award for Best Actress. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, but you can expect a 1080p VC-1 video presentation along with a lossless/uncompressed soundtrack.

Extras include 12 deleted scenes and five making-of featurettes.

So, Circuit City is now offering 60% off Blu-ray's. I went today and most of the Blu-ray's were already snatched up, but I did get Music and Lyrics($14) and Me, Myself and Irene ($12). Not bad, not bad.

Music and Lyrics would have been alright for a chick flick if I didn't have a hatred for Drew Barrymore as an actress. Me, Myself, and Irene is a classic. Can't go wrong with The Farrelly Brothers and Jim Carrey.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is staggering the DVD/Blu-ray Disc launch of a second title, Bedtime Stories. The high-definition version bows on Sunday, April 5, two days before its standard-definition editions street on April 7.

Disney will similarly roll out Bolt on Blu-ray March 22 and on standard DVD on March 24.

In the case of Bolt, studio sources earlier indicated that they wanted to give the Blu-ray format a boost with this head-start approach. The thinking is that, by holding back the DVD, consumers who want to see Bolt early will be encouraged to trade up to Blu-ray.

Perhaps also adding a must-have aspect to Bedtimes Stories, Disney has announced that the Blu-ray version will be available only for a limited time. It’s unclear the exact length of its availability at retail.

Disney did not comment on its Bolt or Bedtime Stories strategies.

Bedtime Stories (prebook Feb. 24) will be priced at $29.99 for the single disc, $34.99 for the two-disc special edition and $39.99 for Blu-ray.

Drew Barrymore is ok, she wasn't as annoying as she usually is in Music and Lyrics, I thought it was pretty good. And yes, Me, Myself & Irene is a classic. Love that movie.

I would think that would work better if they released the movie a couple of weeks earlier on Blu-ray.

Agreed, I doubt the difference in two days will do anything measurable

I think if they included a DVD copy with the Blu-ray it would be effective with that 2 day early release.

I'd rather get the movie a few weeks earlier with just the Blu-ray, personally. Adding a DVD, Blu-ray, Digital Copy...that will just add to the costs.

Well your not the target audience in this experiment you have to keep that in mind. They are focusing on people who HAVEN'T bought into the format yet. If they threw in a DVD copy with the Blu-ray and average joe comes in only able to find the Blu-ray of Bolt. He then inquires to where the DVD version is and then learns that it doesn't come out until a few days but the Blu-ray version comes with the DVD. Theres a good spark of interest/curiousity factor there. But maybe their current strategy will help as well. I know Fox is including a DVD copy with Marley and Me so its not just Disney experimenting and trying to make their Blu-ray customers grow.

The "Bolt" Blu-ray IS coming with a DVD copy:

^ Nice. Looks like I had the right thinking going. Should be very interesting to see how effective it is.

And I looked it up: "Bedtime Stories" will have the same 3-Disc thing going. Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy.

I'm hoping it's priced competitively with other Blu-ray's. I would imagine adding the DVD will up the costs a bit.

Bedtime Stories (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)
-MSRP $39.99
-Amazon $27.99

Bedtime Stories (2-Disc DVD + Digital Copy)
-MSRP $32.99
-Amazon $22.99

Bolt (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)

That's $7 for the Blu-ray portion MSRP or $5 for the Blu-ray portion. Not bad, I'd say.

What would you say is the best looking Blu Ray?

Based off what I have, the best looking Blu-rays I have are:

The Fall (looks absolutely fantastic. The picture quality is just flawless)
Planet Earth (looks absolutely breathtaking and should be must own)
Band of Brothers (Another one that just captures every detail and color, and it just looks sexy)
Nightmare Before Christmas (picture is so clear and you can't even tell these things are puppets)

Of course there's more, but these just blew me away.

Yeah I just got done watching The Fall it definitely is an all around stunning disc. As for the movie itself I didn't get into the fantasy aspect of it so much. I thought it was a well made film and everything just didn't get into it that much.

Yeah, i can see why people may not be able to get into the film. But as for me, I just loved it.
