Anita Baker was raised in Detroit, Michigan. She began singing in a Baptist church choir at the age of 12. At age 16 she was in a band called Humanity which included fellow high school friends and was playing with other local bands when she was approached by bass player David Washington of Chapter 8 to audition.
In 1975, Anita joined Chapter 8, the most popular group of Detroit at the time. They spent a couple of years playing in and around Detroit, and eventually got a record deal with Ariola. The self-titled album came out in fall 1979. Two singles hit the R&B charts: "Ready for Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl". Ariola Records suddenly ran into financial trouble and the company was bought by Arista. The executives at Arista thought Anita couldn't sing and didn't want to renew Chapter 8's contract. Anita went home to Detroit and took a job with a law firm as a receptionist.

War was a multiracial, multicultural American funk band of the 1970s from Los Angeles, California, known for the hit song "Low Rider". Formed in 1969, War was the first and most successful musical crossover, fusing elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, R&B, and even reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. The band's diverse musical influences have made it an enduring influence, one that has sold nearly 25 million records to date. Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. The music has been sampled and covered by many contemporary artists, ranging from Janet Jackson to Korn to TLC.

Tavares

Originally named Chubby and the Turnpikes, they started performing in 1963, when the youngest brother was thirteen years old. By 1973 they signed with Capitol Records, scoring their first R&B Top 10 (Pop Top 40) hit with "Check it Out", that same year, and soon began charting regularly on the R&B and pop charts. Their first album included their brother Victor, who dropped out of the group shortly after. In 1974 Tavares had a #1 R&B hit with "She's Gone" (later a hit for Hall and Oates), which they followed up with "Remember What I Told You To Forget." 1975 turned out to be their most successful year chart-wise, chalking up a Top 40 Pop album (In the City) and their biggest hit, the Top 10 Pop/#1 R&B smash "It Only Takes a Minute". This was followed by a a string of hits: "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" (1976), "Don't Take Away The Music" (1976), "The Ghost of Love" (1977) and "Whodunit" (1977), among others.
Many of their hits, however, underplayed their R&B background and gave the group the image of being a disco act. This perception was reinforced by their appearance on the soundtrack to the film [[Saturday Night Fever]] in 1977. Tavares recorded the Bee Gees track "More Than a Woman", and their version reached the Pop Top 40 that year. The soundtrack became one of the most successful in history, giving Tavares their only Grammy.
However, later albums such as Madame Butterfly, and Supercharged, straying from the disco format, were less successful on the Pop chart (although they continued to have Top 10 R&B hits such as "Never Had a Love Like This Before" and "Bad Times"). At the start of the new decade, Tavares parted ways with Capitol Records, signing with RCA. There was one last major hit, the ballad "A Penny For Your Thoughts" (#32 Pop, #3 R&B, #15 AC), in 1982, but subsequent releases failed to match this success.
In 1983, Ralph Tavares stepped down from the group, and Tiny left in the mid 1990s, but the other three brothers continue to tour.
Their hit song "It Only Takes a Minute" is featured in the soundtrack of Konami's dancing game Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix.

Thank for the reminder of Al...

Yea I heard of that album with GB it's wonderful.

Alwyn Lopez Jarreau (born March 12, 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin), known popularly as Al Jarreau, is an American, Grammy Award–winning jazz singer. Versatile in his singing style, Jarreau is a six-time Grammy-nominated vocalist and the only vocalist in history to win a Grammy Award in three separate categories: jazz, pop, and R&B.
As the son of a vicar, he had his first singing experiences in a church choir. He attended Ripon College, where he also sang non-professionally with a group called the Indigos, and graduated in 1962. He went on to earn a master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa, and worked as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco before joining a small jazz club trio headed by George Duke and deciding that he would make professional singing his life.
He appeared in such Los Angeles hot spots as Dino's, the Troubadour and Bitter End West. Television exposure came from Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and David Frost, while he expanded his nightclub appearances to include performing at the Improv between the acts of such rising-star comics as Bette Midler, Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi, among others.
He was spotted by Warner Bros. in 1975 and soon thereafter released his critically acclaimed debut album, We Got By, which catapulted him into international fame and garnered him a German Grammy Award. A second German Grammy would follow with the release of his second album, Glow.
One of Jarreau's most commercially and artistically successful albums is Breakin' Away (1981), which includes the hit song "We're in This Love Together." He wrote and performed the Grammy-nominated theme to the 1980s American television show Moonlighting. Among other things, he is well-known for his scat singing and the ability to perfectly imitate conventional guitar, bass and percussive instrumentation. He was also a featured vocalist on USA for Africa's "We are the World" and sang the line, "...and so we all must lend a helping hand."
He has toured and performed with such greats as Joe Sample, Kathleen Battle, Miles Davis, David Sanborn and Rick Braun. He also performed the role of the Teen Angel in a 1996 Broadway production of Grease. On March 6, 2001 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His star is located at 7083 Hollywood Boulevard on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.
Al Jarreau appeared in a duet with American Idol finalist Paris Bennett during the Season 5 finale and on Celebrity Duets singing with actor Cheech Marin.
In 2006, Al Jarreau was the lucky recipient of a muffin flavor named after him. The Al Jarreau muffin is a product of Cunningham Muffins.

He left chicago after many years without succes, then after huge success in europe went back to become a massive succes across the entire globe.
