The Funk, Soul, R&B Thread.

Patti LaBelle (born Patricia Louise Holt on May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an R&B/soul legend who fronted two moderately successful groups before achieving success as a solo artist in the late 1970s and in the process has influenced a new generation of female singers. She is known for her strong vocals and her signature vocal belting. She has been largely compared to Aretha Franklin during the 1970s, but her distinguishing vocal belting remains unique and recognizable. Her biography Don't Block the Blessings, remained at the top of the New York Times best seller list for several weeks. In addition, she is also a bestselling cookbook author. She is widely regarded by many in the music industry, including VH1, Sir George Martin, and Rolling Stone magazine, as being one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

He was best with his muddy waters band which starred, Luther "guitar Jr" Johnson and jerry portnoy. Among other greats, but those are the two that i remember best, and luther took the whole band when he left for his solo work. Also on my iPod lol

All of these women had strong "distinct" voices. You knew who it was when they first sang the first note. Today....they all sound packaged.

Wow! I had no idea.

Midori is so hot. :wow:

After Kid Rock, Midori is off limits, throw up the yellow tape and call the Center for Disease Control.

especially Scritti Politti

I love Green Gartside; the 6 foot 2 blonde Welsh young communist punk rock soul singer who had dinner with Jacques Derrida.

Their latest album, White Bread Black Beer came out 7/25/06, Green is 51, but his voice has not changed an iota from when he sang Perfect Way in 85. It's a brilliant record.

Cupid and Psyche 85 is one of my favorite albums, in England I could get 90 pounds for my vinyl copy. Whenever I tell people drummer Fred Maher produced and played the drums on Lou Reed's album New York, they don't believe me.

An amazing artist and an amazing band. I think of Larry Graham inventing slap bass. I think of Eveyday People and Dance to the music. I think of Sly taking every white person in the group to meet with the Black Panthers. I think Sly's life is a warning about drugs. Now I'm no holier than thou absitence guy but this guy was just of the charts crazy for drugs.

Most people, when in LA County Jail would say - I have a drug problem, I don't think they'd break out and get more drugs. It is so hard to Imagine Sly a wanted fugitive, but that is what he was. I saw this documentary years ago, I think it was made by German film students, and that lady who played the trumpet? She drives a bus. Sylvester Stewart should of cleaned up his act and taken care of his band. Dude was a pimp, I don't mean that in some gangster compliment way, but at the height of his fame, he was a pimp, I think he had 8 or twelve women in his stable while being a chart topping star. The hubris! The absurdity!

The documenary had this bit about Prince, if you take the vinyl single of Kiss and play the b side at 33, for love or money is a tribute to Sly. I tried it and it's not a bad song.
