The Good, The Bad, and The Official Western Thread

Not sure it was a Western (I think it was contemporary and about a snuff film and Depp, playing a Native-American, sacrificing himself for his family or something) and not sure euro critics liked it either or even saw it as it seems to have disappeared pretty fast from the face of the earth and has the reputation of not being very good, (but I haven't seen it.)
One of the few things euro critics got right was to recognize Clint Eastwood's talent as well as his auteur quality very early on and before their US counterparts.

I like all of them but my favorite is probably still Kirk Douglas, maybe because I'm a big Kirk Douglas fan.

Two of my favorites are - Jason Robards in HOUR OF THE GUN and Val Kilmer in TOMBSTONE.

I was introduced to the legend via the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral so for me Kirk is also the definitive Doc Holiday, but Val Kilmer's turn in the role may be the best performance of his career.

CATLOW is a decent but not great movie. It's based off of a Louis L'Amour book, so it gets points for that....it seems to wander a bit from what I remember. It follows the characters of Catlow (Yul Brynner) a likeable outlaw that is being hunted by his old friend a sheriff (Richard Crenna) and a ruthless bounty hunter (Leonard Nimoy). You have shootouts, robberies, Indian attacks.....

That's an interesting trio of actors for sure, I might well check it out, thanks Doc.

Mr. Frank Wolff keeps showing up in all of my spaghetti western favorites.

What a chameleon. Great actor.

Has anyone seen this?

Yep, seen it a bunch of times. It's a good movie. It's about a hundreds of miles horse race that gathers a diverse group of characters to run it. Besides the excellent as usual leads (Hackman and Coburn) you have Candice Bergin (never looking better) as a prostitute wanting to use the winning money to get out of the business (or is that really her motive?) Ben Johnson as an aging cowboy hoping to get a retirement nestegg, Jan-Michael Vincent as a young full of himself hothead in serious need of humility training, Ian Bannen as an English nobleman wanting to see the difference between his proper gentlemanly ways against the rough course colonials, and Mario Arteaga as the Mexican farmer seeing the race as a way to change his family's fortune and who has to literally "bite the bullet" to make it through.

I like the sound of that! I looked the trailer up and Hackman looks like he took out all of the scenery and you weren't kidding about Candice Bergin! That's the youngest I've seen Jan Michael Vincent, i am used to him from Airwolf. The plot reminds me a bit of the underrated Hidalgo.

Speaking of Sterling Hayden (nice pic from JOHNNY GUITAR).........one of the weirdest westerns I saw decades ago is - TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052287/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_29 .....Hayden is a Swedish sailor looking into the murder of his father.....any western that ends with a shootout between a hired gunslinger and a guy with a harpoon has to be seen to be believed.

Have you ever watched the John Wayne, Rock Hudson western THE UNDEFEATED? Jan-Michael is one of Hudson's confederates "Bubba". It was made 6 or so years before BITE THE BULLET.

A funny thing about the BITE THE BULLET poster.....the part on it of the guys on the motorcycle with the sidecar....are Hackman, Coburn, and Vincent.

What film?

Any one seen Slow West, I hear it's a pretty good Western and I'm looking forward to watching it.

The Dark Valley

An austrian spaghetti western. :woot:

I really enjoyed it, but was not a fan of some of the music choices. Still good. You can find it on netflix. 8/10

Slow West- It was a lot of fun, but when I tried to reach for more..I came up empty. The ending is good. Fassbender needs to do another western. 7/10

This is impossible to get in the UK. German blu-ray has no Eng subs and US DVD release is Region 1.

It is listed on Amazon UK but there's no release date or pre-order option yet. :cmad:

I paid a bit extra for a region free bluray player. :cwink:

Worth it!

Ah....the VALLEY OF GWANGI.....best cowboys and dinosaurs movie out there. One thing I remember from the promotion back then....for 2 or 3 weeks leading up to it's release....they had big full color ads of the poster in the Sunday funny pages. That got all us kids stirred up wanting to see it. It was the closest thing to ads for movies on the Disney channel now a days.

I have some oddball trivia.

Have you seen this one, C. Lee ? The Last Western Leone worked on. I remember it was fun but haven't seen it in a long time.

A Genius, Two Partners and a Dupe

No, I haven't. I'm always prowling the bargain bins everywhere to find stuff like that. I like Terence Hill a lot, I'm always looking for his movies. In the last couple of years I have found 2 on the encore western channel (THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, and MAN OF THE EAST) I haven't watched Christmas yet, but Man Of the East is hilarious (it has Harry Carey Jr and Gregory Walcott as co stars).
