And as a complete side-note, I just want to say that if nothing else, we got some truly great performances from Scout Taylor-Compton and Brad Dourif.

I’m not gonna get into the whole discussion or argument over those films, but I also think Tyler did great as a very brutal Myers.

I LOVE Rob Zombies music, and i really enjoyed Devils Rejects but what I don't understand is why he said each halloween got worse after the original, but completely misunderstood what made the character so scary to begin with in his own movie. It ended up being worse than almost all the sequels.

I do think Dourif was decent in the films but I disagree on Scout personally.

With Fall approaching and more importantly Halloween approaching, which of the films do you think capture that October feel the most?

Which Halloween films have the most, well, Halloween atmosphere?

Well to me if anyone likes Rob Zombie's versions, they are entitled to their opinion.
My problem is, I know somewhere Carpenter stated 2 things about writing the original Halloween.

1) It wasn't written to be a sequel, so the Laurie sister angle was not his idea & forced on us by the writers of part 2.
2) His motivation for killing is left a mystery on purpose to make him seem more like a monster......no one knows why he is doing it.

Halloween 4 is one that definitely stands out to me. That opening credits sequence is the first thing that pops into my mind.

John Carpenter (& Debra Hill) were the writers of Part 2 as well though he has stated that he regrets making that decision on the sibling angle.

"Well, okay. Here's how it was. I made Halloween, and then Halloween was sold to NBC to show it. But it was too short---they needed it to be a certain length. So I had to go back and shoot some more footage to make it longer. And I was absolutely stuck. I didn't know what to do. I mean, the movie is the movie---I don't want to touch it. But everybody will be happy with me, and they'll make money, and that's great. So I had to come up with something. I think it was, perhaps, a late night fueled by alcoholic beverages, was that idea. A terrible, stupid idea! But that's what we did." - John Carpenter

Halloween IV for me, that’s the one where we get the best atmosphere for me, they really captured the feel of the season the best in that one.

I humbly stand corrected. Hats off to you. I mis-remebered. :)

- Halloween 78
- Halloween 2018
- Season of the Witch
- Halloween 2 & 4 tied (not my Michael Myers but there’s stuff there to enjoy)
- First Zombie movie tied with H2O (bad but not unwatchable)
- The rest (are garbage)

I've only enjoyed 1978 and 2018 Halloween and would rate them with an 8 and a 7 for now.

Haven't seen or liked the rest (20years later etc)

Rewatched Halloween 5 today. Somehow it gets worse the more I watch it. Not the worst of the series, but it's bad. Halloween 4 on the other hand has some really good stuff in it. The mask and the way the shape looks just isn't good, but the atmosphere, music, and tone is very well done and it's oneo f the better sequels. I still think the Thorn story was stupid though.

My rankings;

Halloween 1978
Halloween 2018
Halloween II
Halloween H20
Halloween III
Halloween 4
Halloween 6
Halloween 5
Halloween Resurrection
Halloween 2007
Halloween 2

One thing I've noticed is how stupid most of the masks look, and what a difference body language makes.

Most "Michaels" move like plodding zombies. Whereas James Jude Courtney moves deliberately but purposefully. His Michael feels like the original in a way most don't.

James Jude Courtney is easily the best shape since Nick Castle. I was thinking today while watching Halloween 5 how a lot of the sequels got so lazy with the way the Shape was portrayed. somehow I think Halloween 5 is worse than Halloween 6. The mask was just atrocious and they also turned the Myers house into a damn castle for no reason.

H2O is just...bad. I watched it last October like “people think this is the best sequel?”. It’s a really bad Scream rip-off. And I mean one of the crappy Scream sequels. Even the first Zombie movie feels more Halloween than that.

The thing that grinds my gears the most about these movies (especially Zombie’s) is how Michael walks or moves his head. Why did they turn him into Jason Vorhees? I just don’t get it.

H5 is absolutely worse than BOTH versions of H6. Other than some decent atmosphere and a few good "Michael stalking" moments, it's ulmimately a terrible, pointless entry.

The H6 Producers cut continues to grow on me over the years. No, it's not a great movie and not nearly as good as something like H18, but the PC at least makes a lot more sense and at least this movie TRIED to do something unique and different with the franchise, while also trying to harken back to the vibe of the original. There a few somewhat legitimately "scary" moments, the PC is not needlessly gory like the TC and relies more on suspense, George Wilbur's portrayal of Michael is solid (and much better than the way he moved in H4), and the mask is one of the best of the original franchise pre-H18. I like that they also tied everything back to the original film with characters like Tommy Doyle and Wynne. Loomis has a much meatier role in the Producer's Cut and some great lines -- and his acting isn't nearly as over-the-top as it was in H5. Plus, Paul Rudd!

H5 is a sequel that really has virtually nothing to offer. You can tell they rushed it out and what they did with the Jamie Lloyd character was just absurd and annoying. The H5 mask, while horrible, at least has a cool and unique expression to it, but the un-tucked neck portion of the mask looked like crap. Had the mask been tucked in to his overalls, it would have come off a lot better.

Like Halloween 6 or not I still stand by George P. Wilbur's portal of Michael Myers as being one of the scariest out there, especially the mask which I always found super creepy for some reason. Michael was great in that movie, but the Thorn cult stuff really does bog it down. Everything about H5 on the otherhand is just ****ing awful and unforgivable in every way which is why its still one of the worst if not the worst sequel in the franchise.
