The Healthy Hypesters Challenge

Soda in general (Coke, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, even diet sodas and vitamin-enriched sodas) are acidic and can give you problems if you drink them too much, or in correlation with spicy foods.

Stick with water, fresh fruit, and keep any kind of soda beverage in moderation.

i've alot to catch up on in this thread but it sounds like people are making great progess.

i know a lot of ppl have recommended livestrong.com but for those who watch The Biggest Loser, they have a great league set up thing where you can track you exercise logs, food journal, blogs, etc and they have lil things you can do that not only help you stay on track, but you get points (sort of like an incentive).
they've got a message board and stuff too. me and a friend signed up for this one

2008 was a good year for me. I lost 75lbs. To try something different I started Body For Life this week. I hope to get insanely ripped, and put on a little size. I don't wanna get to big, right now I weigh about 190lbs and have about 13% body fat. I would much like to keep my weight the same but be at about 5-8% body fat.

I don't know that I've made a lot of progress. I lost one of my five pounds. I am sure that I need to increase my activity level, something that is going to be harder to do with me being on layoff for a while. I am not one to go outside when it's this cold.

My favorite soda is Dr. Pepper and I have done a good job of limiting that. I don't drink a whole one at a time and I spread that out to once every two weeks or so. It is true that the less soda you drink the easier it is to leave behind. I find that flavored water helped me get rid of that craving. :)

updated the front page, plz lemme know if i missed anyone.

also, i've drank at least one bottle of water every day at work. I plan on getting a nice portable bottle/container or whatever, so i can quit buying plastic water bottles, thus maintaining healthy habits, and help the environment a lil more.

during my break, when I do get something to eat, I've been eating yogurt, and I've focused on eating a lot of vegetables this week. I'm off tomorrow and I intend to clean out the fridge, throw out stuff that's no good, and stuff that is not good for me.

I can probably count on one hand the number of soda's I've had since July 31st 2008, and I have not had a single one in all of 2009 yet. I really enjoy drinking water now, but sometimes I will add crystal light to it for flavor. There's 5 calories a serving and a total fat percentage of 0%. I lost almost 10 lbs in August just from cutting out all the soda and switching for water.

Now I need to start increasing my activity. I move a lot at work, but I need to start doing more at home.

I think I'm one of the few people out there who hardly ever drinks pop and I've never really drank it, except at parties....

Alright, woke up and did a 2 mile jog in my new running shoes this morning. I've lost about 14 pounds since January 1st, and crunched some numbers with my goal. I'll need to average a little less7 pounds a month, which shouldn't be too bad.

today i did some stuff around the house to help me get more motivated about "me"

i got new sheets and put em on my bed. then i went and bought some new, better, pillows for it. i bought some wrist/ankle weights to wear when exercising or around the house, and maybe at work.

i also bought one of those nice water bottles with the steel lids so i can quit buying plastic water bottles

oh yeah, and i got a pedo-meter too. so stay away pedos :o

just kidding, but i bought a pedometer so i can track what i do

I posted this in the fitness thread, but thought I'd post this recipe here, too!

A yummy way to prepare chicken! I just tried this recipe tonight:

Japanese Chicken-Scallion Rice Bowl

Ingredients

1. 1 1/2 cups instant brown rice
2. 1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
3. 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
4. 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
5. 1 tablespoon mirin
6. 2 large egg whites
7. 1 large egg
8. 8 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
9. 6 scallions, trimmed and thinly sliced

Cooking Directions

1. Prepare instant brown rice according to package directions.
2. Pour broth into a heavy medium saucepan, along with sugar, soy sauce and mirin. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low.
3. Stir egg whites and whole egg in a small bowl until just mixed. Add chicken to the simmering broth. Gently pour in the egg mixture, without stirring. Sprinkle scallions on top. When the egg starts to firm up, after about 3 minutes, stir it with chopsticks or a knife. (The chicken will be cooked by now.) Divide the rice among 4 deep soup bowls and top with the chicken mixture.

Here's the quintessence of Japanese home cooking: an aromatic, protein-rich broth served over rice. Admittedly, Japanese cooking leans heavily on sugar--for a less traditional taste, you could reduce or even omit the sugar.
Notes:

Ingredient Tip

Mirin is a low-alcohol rice wine essential to Japanese cooking. Look for it in your supermarket with the Asian or gourmet ingredients. An equal portion of sherry or white wine with a pinch of sugar may be substituted for mirin.

High in protein, very low in fat. I loved it! I added more chicken, and used only one tablespoon of sugar. I also didn't have mirin sitting around my kitchen and didn't feel like going to the store just for that, so I omitted it. I added a few drops of sesame oil, instead. I'm sure it would taste even better with the mirin.

This was absurdly easy to cook, and the sugar and mirin could easily be taken out and substituted with something spicy, such as red pepper flakes or a good Asian hot sauce.

That's a great idea. We need a Recipes thread.

That actually sounds really good Pickles, I just might have to make it.

I agree! :D

I had pizza today so it's a fail for me. It had veggies on it so that has to count for something. ;p

I'm not sure if anyone here is taking protein, but for anyone who wants to start taking it and has trouble drinking any due to taste, I just bought some Muscle Milk and....wow. It tastes SO good. I usually use Optimum Nutrition (still the best value for your $$...eventually I'd like to go back to it), but I found myself unable to get into the habit of drinking my shakes because I dreaded the taste. MM DOES have more fat, however, but I keep my diet itself as low-fat as possible.

I'm going to hopefully use the MM to just get into the routine of drinking shakes every day, and then go back to something not as tasty.

drank over a liter of water yesterday!

trying to drink a liter of water a day. but since i just woke up at 9am (from being up almost 30hrs straight) i've got some catching up to do.

I meant to buy some gallon containers of water at the store today, and I totally forgot :csad: Drinking that much water is very very difficult for me...particularly because I tend not to drink much if I'm not thirsty.

I add vanilla flavored whey protien powder in my cereal or just mix it with milk and drink it. I think it tastes great. I haven't heard so many good things about soy protien. Most soy drinks I have tried sucked. :(

Remember, do not force your self to drink too much water. You can get Hydro Shock and kill your brain.

I've been stuck on Negative 12.5 pounds for 5 straight days, I'm not gaining or losing. However, I'm at 21 days without a cigarette!
