I'm reading the Song of Ice and Fire series now, and this book takes place in the same universe. It's even written by the author of the books.

A Song of Ice and Fire is set in a fantasy world called Westeros.
Unlike Middle-Earth, it is based much more in reality. There is magic, but it is not as dominate as it is in other fantasy series.
The characters are more real as well. Each chapter of the novels is taken from a certain character of the book. And none of the characters are safe. There is no telling when one character will be killed off, which is why it is so intreguing.
For all we know, the bad guys could win in the end of the series. There are multiple families fighting for control of the realm, the main one in the books being the Starks. Their rivals would be the Lannisters. I don't want to give too much away, unless you guys want me too.

Crap, I never answered what a Hedge Knight was.
I believe it is a knight that doesn't serve a lord or king, but instead serves others who need his service. They usually aren't actually knights, just people who act like them.
