The Horror Thread - Part 1

Nothing guilty, just pure pleasure. Watching that film is one of my oldest holiday traditions.

Hocus Pocus is actually playing for two nights at a drive in theater nearby to where I live. Its in a double feature with Beetlejuice.

Their second screen is playing a double feature of Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street. I may have to go two nights in a row.

Side Note: Vinessa Shaw, who plays Allison in Hocus Pocus went on to play a prostitute in Kubrick's Final film "Eye's Wide Shut." A very weird moment when it registered for me that it was the same actress.

Those double features sound amazing.

Oooh, November 1st and 2nd the Sunshine is playing The Thing at midnight. Gonna have to go see that.

Those double features sound amazing.

They're actually a triple features. After the other movies are done Rocky Horror plays at midnight. All of this for 10 bucks. I love the Skyview Drive In.

Last year I saw House of 1000 Corpses and the Devils Rejects.

And the year before that Friday the 13th and Saw.

They had to move away from their film projectors, which is unfortunate as I really enjoy watching films from 35 mm prints, but at the same time, it allows the place to stay open after this year but also the new projectors have a great picture.

Finally saw Apollo 18. It took a while to get going but once it did the story got more interesting. They used era-appropriate cameras and it looked like the 70's but it played like modern "found footage" type movies do.

Probably one of the few unique ways to do it anymore. No one else has "found" video taped from a lunar exploration before.

Too bad it all added up to an absolutely terrible movie.

Just watched Frankenstein's Army, a new found footage movie about a group of Russian soldiers advancing into Nazi territory near the end of WW2, who stumble upon the fact that the Nazis are conducting experiments based on the work of Dr Frankenstein.

I know what you're thinking...sounds awful...but HOLY CRAP...this movie is AWESOME! Don't get me wrong...the plot is paper thin and the characters only exist to be attacked...but about midway through the film I became absolutely giddy about the gore and monsters on display (practical effects by the way). It's like...Steampunk Nazi Cenobites in a Marilyn Manson video...and if that doesn't make you want to watch it, then you are no friend of mine.

Yes, the movie is stupid...yes, it is a bit like watching a first person video game...no, it is not "scary"...but in this case, I just don't care. Once it gets rolling, I had a ball watching it!

So does anyone else here have horror movie marathons in the build up to or on Halloween?

I usually do a marathon all month , but so far in the past week I've already watched White Zombie, House on Haunted Hill , Friday the 13th part 1-10 , Freddy vs Jason , and Friday the 13th (2009). I'm way ahead of myself this year.

I would've preferred the actual Jason Mewes over some unknown dweeb doing a bad "Jason Mewes As Jay" impersonation. I don't remember, was Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back being made at the same time as Freddy vs Jason? Or did that come out a lot earlier?

I wasn't all that impressed with Monica Keena's acting ability (although it was better than Kelly Rowland's, which isn't saying much). But hit the mute button on the TV and it's fun to watch her jiggle. She'd make a great stripper, or possibly even a porn star. Luckily I think FvJ was the death of her mainstream acting career, as I haven't seen her in anything since.

I saw her in another horror film , but she wasn't much better. The girl was very attractive though. On the commentary Robert Englund even makes jokes about getting close to her. Unfortunately for her I think she had a botched cosmetic surgery.

Mewes was struggling with heroin addiction around the time Freddy vs Jason was being filmed and at one point disappeared for several months.
It's a shame because he would of been more amusing. Also that imitation is very distracting. At least the fights were amusing and Jason interrupting the rave party was awesome.

Yeah Monica Keena looks awful now, don't know why she had any work done she was beautiful.

Jason Mewes probably would have been more costly than the actor they cast anyway. Kane Hodder wasn't cast cause they wanted to use a new stunt guy as it would be cheaper. Fricking idiots!

Not absolutely terrible but it wasn't all that great either. It was middling at best. The low budget and as I found out, constant script revisions showed too. Still better than a lot of the found footage movies of late.

Damn I just google Monica Keena and damn why did she get so much work done? She used to be super cute now she doesn't look anything like she did in 2003.

Man, I thought this movie would have actually been really good if it wasn't found footage. The monsters reminded me of something out of Bioshock, they looked amazing, but they just don't get the attention they need with a film like this. Not the worst I've seen, but it really needed to be an actual film instead of trying to do the found footage thing.

I'm currently watching a found footage film called The Bay. So far, its pretty interesting.

I tend to dislike all found footage. However, it really didn't bother me too much in this case just because of how awesome the monsters were (and I feel like the better quality of footage, maybe the more we'd notice the small budget). I went in having already turned my brain off and just rolled with it.

So, this The Bay film, is less found footage and more compilations of footage to tell a story of what happened one day in a town. Honestly, I'm liking it a lot better than I thought so far.

Still to this day the rave scene is one of my favorites from FVJ watching Jason machete slash randoms and blood squirting anime style is priceless, even if it isn't Kane Hodder :(

Personally I think its one of the worst movies that I've seen in theaters in the past 5 years or so.

So, I'm only halfway through, but I'm thinking I'm gonna recommend "The Bay". Its really interesting. Its done much better than the average found footage film, and actually is kinda frightening in a different way than a lot of horror recently.

Also, those giant isopod things terrify me.

I wish I could say I can stomach found footage movies, but just not my cup of tea.

Fair enough, but this I'm watching is a lot different. Its pieced together with like webcam footage, news reports, etc. Its pretty interesting, and it honestly has managed to freak me out.

See that sounds interesting because it sounds more like some kind of epistolary film, similar to how Dracula is an epistolary novel. When its pieced together from multiple sources you don't have that question of "Why do they keep filming?"

Exactly. It uses like security cam footage to piece multiple angles, it actually explains that stuff. For example, the main person reporting even mentions 20 minutes before the film is over her and her camera man quit filming because it was a horrible situation and they just couldn't continue. The rest comes from other sources, police cameras, etc. It surprised me. Not the best movie ever, but it actually managed to give me a sense of dread and was grounded in some realism. Pretty interesting stuff.

Side note: I'm surprised we haven't seen a resurgence in the epistolary novel as we finally live in a time in which they make sense.

In reading Dracula and other such works, it was always a strain to understand or believe that anyone would keep diaries that detailed.

Now though, I know people live tweet just about everything.

I think a really interesting book could be put together through internet posts and cell phone pictures.

I saw it on Netflix so it doesn't go down as that. AVP: Requiem is forever holding my title of "worst movie I ever saw in a theater." After that pile of **** I became even more wary of what I will see in a theater.

Saw it, didn't care for it.

I'm getting a bit bored of the found footage stuff.

This probably being why. This entire subgenre has so much great potential but all these hack writers with bad stories and worse acting has ruined it for me.

The worst film I've ever seen in a theater is a tie between Alone in the Dark and Black Xmas (the remake).
