The Horror Thread - Part 1

Both of those I saw as rentals, back when Blockbuster still existed.

Even sadder is I remember the days before Blockbuster existed and we had smaller rental places not connected to giant franchise businesses like that.

I think that will be the bigger impact on the next generation: The concept of a store that is not a part of a larger corporation but its own entity. "Mom and Pop" stores are already practically a relic now.

Yeah, I actually when Blockbuster like blew up in my area. We had rented from other, smaller stores for a while, but then BLOCKBUSTER came, and it was like "holy crap, it's like the Disney World of VHS tapes!"

I remember the "Blockbuster Video... WOW! What a difference!" jingle in the commercial.

The Blockbuster I really grew up with (which I believe was the first one in my city), finally closed this summer. Sad stuff.

There was another place we used to go to sometimes, but it didn't last long. I think it was called Knights Video or something. They didn't have as many new movies, but they would do deals were it was like 5 movies for 5 nights for 5 dollars, or something crazy.

a A cool cover of a Video or DVD alone would make watch some films.

Mewes was struggling with heroin addiction around the time Freddy vs Jason was being filmed and at one point disappeared for several months.
It's a shame because he would of been more amusing. Also that imitation is very distracting. At least the fights were amusing and Jason interrupting the rave party was awesome.[/QUOTE]

Still to this day the rave scene is one of my favorites from FVJ watching Jason machete slash randoms and blood squirting anime style is priceless, even if it isn't Kane Hodder :(

As much as I wish it had been Kane Hodder I've gotten over it. I think Ken Kirzinger did a good job myself especially as the Frankenstein's monster type version of the character. Plus if you look at all the Jason's pre-Kane Hodder none of them were consistent so I don't think that version of the character was out of character as some have suggested over the years.

Tbh I think Derek Mears did the best job as Jason, he managed to combine the best elements of my favourite Jason's Ted White, CJ Graham and Kane Hodder.

The worst film I've ever seen in a theater is a tie between Alone in the Dark and Black Xmas (the remake).

i had hope for Black Xmas (being a huge fan of the original). but then they added that chase scene at the hospital; leaving the confines of the sorority house. it took all of the scary out of it, for me. i didn't like the inclusion of the killer's daughter either. i'm not sure what they were going for w/ that.

Both the Blockbusters in this area are closed. One closed 2-3 years ago, the other last year. Amazingly we have one rental store (something I can't remember but not a franchise) that's stubbornly hanging on but I haven't been to it in like a decade so it might be closed for all I know.

That reminds me of the days when I would go into a place, rent a VHS(!) tape(!!) based on the cover or title alone. Always a gamble on what you'd get. Creature was one I always hesitated to rent for some reason and years later I finally saw it on Netflix for the cheap Alien rip off it truly was.

Derek was fantastic and is definitely in my top 5 but Kane will always be my#1 followed by Ted White (TFC) and then CJ Graham from Jason Lives.

All this talk of blockbuster going under and the old videostores remind me of when I was I kid. I would go to the nearest video club (before blockbuster)and stare at the covers in the horror section, creeped out yet curiously amazed. Those beautiful painted covers like the ones for demons, NOES ect. unlike the crappy photoshopped ones we get now a days. speaking of which(although not painted still awesomely 80's retro

The old video store had this little area that was way in the back and around the corner that was nothing but 70's and 80's science fiction and horror films (and then weirdly 2 rows of porn at the top, because I guess children don't look up).

That corner was like a magical portal and along with my parent's very loose attitude towards content, shaped my tastes probably more than anything.

I used to LOVE going into the haunted house section of the Video King that was near my house, even though my parents wouldn't let me rent any of them I knew at a young age I would be a horror fan.

Thank god for my older sister trying to ruin my mind. By age ten I was sending her into rent a horror movie for me to watch, I felt like a high school kid wanting to get beer for a party lol

My best moment at Blockbuster was when I was like maybe 10 or 11, I think. As a joke, my friend and I picked up two tapes to ask his dad about. The two tapes were Grease (which we both really love) and Basic Instinct. We were like "We've narrowed it down to these two, but we're not sure which one to get." His dad looked at the tapes and sighed and said "Don't you think you've seen Grease enough?" He handed the tapes back to us. We just kind of looked at each other.

He didn't realize what he had done, so I went and put Grease up, and we checked out with Basic Instinct. It wasn't until we got back to his house and we were laughing about it so much that he realized what happened. At that point, he just started laughing and let us go watch it. We spent quite a bit of time fast forwarding to the "good" parts and rewinding over and over. It was awesome.

we had movie nights on fridays when i was growing up. i usually picked the movie. and it was always horror. my younger brother slept with a night light until he was 12. thank the lord for irresponsible parents!

More than anything I miss those little "Mom and pop" video stores too. I used to have one right up the street from my house when I was younger. I'd always rent horror films there every weekend, esp. all the Elm Street movies. In fact, the owners knew I loved Freddy so anytime a new Nightmare on Elm Street promotion came to the store, they'd always let me have it when they took it down. Good times. :yay:

It's sad to think that we know what Blockbuster was, but the next generation will be like lol wut?

The same with video game arcades.

Watching Wreck It Ralph totally reminded me that video game arcades are mostly gone now

Has anyone here ever watched Chopping Mall from the 80s? Its about robots that patrol a shopping mall and some kids break in (I think to party) and get dispatched one by one. The robots look like giant Johnny 5s lol. Its been years since I last watched it but I remember enjoying it for what it was.

Love Black Christmas and hated that remake. Everything was wrong about that movie and its just the typical crap out of the studio's. How does anyone remake that movie and not include the guessing game of who the killer is?

That VHS cover might be the only thing that I like about the new Evil Dead.

I used to go to the local arcades all the time when I was a teenager. We had one in a bowling alley and one in a pool hall. So much money got spent there.

I saw it on Netflix sometime earlier in the year or late last year. It's not streaming anymore but the DVD rental is there.

Same here. Years ago one of them was going out of business, right around the time movies started being released on DVD. They were selling all their VHS films for dirt cheap. I snagged so many horror films that I could normally only watch when they were on TV or if I rented them of course. I must have been in middle school at the time. I remember getting Critters, The Gate, a good number of episodes they had of Tales From the Darkside as well as a few others.

I still have "mom & pop" video stores nearby, but they're more so hole in the wall types and Russian owned.

The mom and pop stores always had stuff that I couldn't find at Blockbuster, like Faces of Death. I too raided the place for tapes when they went out of business.
