The Horror Thread - Part 1

MY best friend texted me earlier about getting a Tales From the Crypt night together some time soon. I can't say no to that.

that sounds like a lot of fun. it's too bad that the quality kind of dipped in the last season. it always amazes me that they were able to get people like Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Reeve, Demi Moore, and the like appearing in these (and having a ball).

Dude that's an awesome coincidence. The Children if the Full Moon episode was my sampler too and I have to say the best I've watched so far. I've only watched the episodes the House a That Bled to Death, which btw you are correct with the con artist family and the one with Brian Cox where Peter Cushing trucks him so he can trap him.

yeah, you've pretty much watched the best of them (can't beat nazi Peter Cushing and Cox). there's also one with a weird doppelganger theme to it that's just begging to be remade.

I REALLY wish they would bring it back. I feel like there are tons of directors and actors who would jump at the chance of doing a Tales From the Crypt episode, especially with how popular HBO shows are now.

I absolutely HATED the first 20 minutes or so of the new Evil Dead. Once the movie kicked into gear there was enough blood and violence to keep me entertained, but I don't think it was anything great or memorable.

that's fair. i didn't really get a friend vibe from this particular collection of actors. but they turned in some memorable "scares." i think some care went into making the movie. but it is still a remake that doesn't really offer anything new. i certainly don't regret seeing it, though.

John Kassir's heart might stop from excitement, if they did. but it turned out to be a really good vehicle for up and coming directors and actors just looking to get their name out there. see now you're making me want it back.

They could even do like "gimmick" episodes where the entire cast of the episode was the cast of another HBO show. I know I'd love a Tales From the Crypt episode featuring the cast of Game of Thrones (or at least just Dinklage).

good idea. i could imagine "Mulder" and "Scully" (or Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni) running a diner that serves human meat. and Dinklage would make a great guest star.

i've made a point of tracking down the original comics that were adapted into these Tales from the Crypt episodes. there are an endless amount of old EC short horror stories that weren't adapted but maybe should have been.

Mostly because the dialogue went something like this...
"Hello, longtime friend...I see that your girlfriend is a nurse"
"Yes, and please say hello to our other longtime friend, who is a teacher"

The development of the characters was just way too clunky to accept post-Cabin In The Woods, especially since it took place at a cabin in the woods.

Eh, Cabin doesn't really change anything. There are movies far, far worse than Evil Dead.

This year, instead of planning my month out, I just put together a big list of my horror films and on each day I'll put on whatever I feel like watching. Then cross it off the list.

Cabin SHOULD have changed things. We shouldn't be asked to accept the same cliches and nonsense that we have put up with our entire lives. It's about time we start thinking outside that box.

And sure...there are FAR worse movies than Evil Dead. Heck, it is probably in my top 10 favorite Horror movies thus far this year (depending on your definition of Horror). But still, when a movie has big money and big, experienced talent behind it, I expect more than cardboard cutout characters and clunky dialogue.

Yeah, he's not that small a dude. My friend saw this, he might even own it, and hated it. Still need to see it myself because, well, good or bad, I have to see it. Wasn't willing to buy it blind at the prices some stores were asking for it (make that mistake enough already).

Yeah, it's not quite for everyone. And like I said before, it's a fairly standard slasher film that doesn't really bring anything new to the slasher sub-genre. But being a huge wrestling fan, and a former masked wrestler myself, I tend to cut it a little more slack than I would with other slashers.

And you're right about the pricing. I think some places were selling copies for something like $45 each. I waited and bought mine when it was marked down to about $10.

And after watching it with the feature length commentary, I can certainly see the potential that the movie had in the beginning. It's just too bad politics got in the way of them shooting in an abandoned hospital like they had originally planned to. I think a change of locale would have helped the film immensely.

I do like the added scenes but never found them completely necessary to the film or the story, but unlike some fans I definitely don't hate them.

Same here. They're not 100% necessary to the story, I mean the original theatrical version works great as is, but it's kinda nice to have them. That's why I bought the extended cut. The original theatrical cut is so easy to find (well, it used to be, but now you have to wade through dozens of copies of RZ's piece of trash), but the extended cut is such a rare gem. If you can find a copy for sale somewhere you should snag it for your collection. They no longer produce copies of this DVD, so you should keep your eyes open for it at your local pawn shops and thrift stores.

My favourite episode was always Television Terror. I remember watching it with my Dad and we were both saying before how Tales from the Crypt episodes were often disapointing but then we watched that late on ITV and afterwards we both just looked at each other and said that was pretty good haha

That ones coming up next. So other than those 3 and Children of the Full Moon are the rest rubbish?

Man, even in a wrestling film politics gets in the way.

Watching Curse of Chucky now. So far so good.

it ends with the cocky reporter (Downey something) being hung out of a window, right? that's certainly a fan favorite. sort of reminds me of the episode where David Warner plays a psychologist with a radio show.

I don't know that I can choose a favorite. but I love the tone of 'the man who was death' w/ Bill Sadler. the conjoined twin ice cream truck drivers episode with Brad Dourif was great too.

i didn't have a strong enough reaction to call them rubbish. they just didn't have satisfying conclusions/weren't memorable. the one that deals with a society of cannibals wasn't bad. but, unfortunately, i had already seen the Tales from the Crypt episode with a similar (and superior) theme.

Anthology show Black Mirror is pretty good show but its more modern science fiction than horror although 'Be Right Back' with Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson had Deadly Friend vibes.

White Bear also has a horror vibe the masked killers.

I watched it yesterday, but I'm posting it now. I actually never saw the remake of F13 until yesterday, but I had watched so many clips and stuff that I knew probably more half of it, so I was able to form somewhat of an opinion. After seeing it in it's entirety, I liked it slightly more than I thought I would.

I loved the hunter vibe they gave Jason.
The tunnel system, while I knew about it before seeing the film, is brilliant.
The score is great, I really like Steve Jablonsky, except for his TCM 03 score which was nothing special except for like a couple songs.
I really enjoyed the plotline with Clay finding his sister. The "trio" of Clay, his sister, and the woman who helps him were likable.
The *****ebag was the king of all *****ebags, so I guess that's a good thing for them.
Lots of sex which is a hallmark for this franchise so it worked.
The kills were pretty good, the series has had better but the movie had serviceable deaths. Loved the arrow through the eye with the cop, the *****ebag's death, and the axe through the back. Again, the others were good, but nothing we haven't seen before.
Great cinematography, Marcus is a great director, TCM 03 proved this as well.
I liked the combination of F13 1-3 in one film. It did a good job at respecting the old with making some new; which the remake of NoES pretty much missed completely.

So yeah, I'd give it a 7.5/10. It was a pretty enjoyable F13, better than most of the F13 films IMO. Thundarr, I know you will disagree. lol

I agree with everything you say here. The only difference is that I saw it opening day, so I hadn't been "spoiled" with anything yet.

I personally love the reboot, think its one of the best of the series. It's miles ahead of the reboots of Halloween and NOES. TCM '03 was great aswell IMO I don't like the original TCM at all so was glad I liked the remake, a Shane the sequel sucked. I haven't seen the new TCM yet.

Watched a movie that was just released on DVD this week called The Haunting of Helena last night.

Okay...I KINDA watched it. It failed to grab my attention, and I kept getting bored and surfed the net while it was on. It's basically another scary tooth fairy movie. It seemed like a lot of characters were popping in and out...the story and attempts at suspense couldn't keep my attention long enough for me to care about what was going on. I only recommend it if you are like me and rent every single new Horror movie that hits Netflix.
