The Horror Thread - Part 1

It takes place in the ocean and is realistic (if greatly exaggerated) so people dismiss it as not horror even though they can turn around and say something (a bear, mountain lion, sasquatch if you believe) killing people in the woods is horror in the same breath.

I'd say Jaws is a Adventure Thriller.

The movie is NOT about the shark eating people. That's what seperates it from other shark/monster movies.

But this is a free world, so any opinion is valid.

JAWS is a horror film. I don't know why there is this sudden trend in not calling it a horror film. It's about a giant shark that eats people. It is considered one of the scariest movies ever made. It's a horror movie. There is a reason it has been labeled as such for almost 40 years.

It reminds me of people calling Silence of the Lambs a "psychological thriller" because they are afraid to call it a horror movie like it's a bad word or that a movie as good as Lambs can't be called horror. It's about a killer who skins women and wears their flesh and another killer who is a cannibal asked to help find him. It's a damn horror movie. If a movies PRIME motivation is to SCARE you than it is a HORROR movie.

Horror, like any other genre, can include other elements like action, sci-fi, comedy etc but that doesn't make them NOT horror.

Horror is super broad a term. Psychological Thriller is just a more specific style of horror. Yes Silence of the Lambs is a horror film. But it is better described as Psychological Thriller.

I hate the people who call a film 'horror' then can't be any more specific about the genre.

Here's a whopper for you guys that'll probably get me flamed to high heaven.

For fans of the Friday films:

I love Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and think The Final Chapter is highly overrated.

*dodges machetes*

I don't think Final Chapter is overrated, but I don't love it as much as other Friday fans.

As for A New Beginning, I find it highly underrated. It certainly could have been much better. Had they cut the number of kills by at least a third it would have been an improvement. It would have allowed them to develop more tension. Here's how I would improve Friday 5.

1) Have fewer scenes with Roy. They made it too obvious he was the killer.

2) Have Vic escape from jail, so everyone will think he's the killer.

3) Have Tommy see Jason just before every kill, so everyone will think he might be the killer.

4) Get rid of the two greasers. The first two real kills will be Billy & Lana.

5) Get rid of Ethel and Junior. As funny as they are, they're just in the way.

6) Get rid of the homeless guy. He was just added in as an excuse to cut away from the love scene.

7) Put the love scene back into the movie.

8) Have Vic's dead body pop up during the final chase scene as one of the victims.

The rest of the movie would play out pretty much as is. Obviously there would have to be more scenes shot to replace the ones I'd want cut. But for the most part it would be the same movie.

Nice suggestions, but the "flaws" in the film are what is so appealing to me. I love the excessive kills. What else do you really watch a Friday film for? I love how half the victims were simply introduced to be killed. I love the coked out and subversive tone, I love the sleaze, I love the whacky humor, I love how purely 80s it is. At times it reminds me of a Troma movie without the excessive gore. It just has that out there tone to it. It has more personality than many of the other entries in the series, and that's why it stands out to me whereas part 4 is just bland. It has awesome kills and I like Feldman as Tommy but other than that it's just bleh. The teens are as boring as boring can get. Crispin Glover doing silly dance isn't enough for me, sorry. These films aren't known for their wonderful characters but in most of them they at least have one or two people you can root for or characters that are entertaining in the "HA, their funny" or "Ha, I want them to die!" way. In part 4 I just didn't care.

Has anyone seen the movie Burnt Offerings with Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Bette Davis? Just watched it last night and it was pretty damn good. There's a scene near the end of the film that had to have heavily inspired Sam Raimi when he made the original Evil Dead.

I've known about Oliver Reed for years through my parents and really want to see more of his work after having watched this, The Brood and of course Gladiator.

I saw Plus One/+1 which was pretty good. Weird but entertaining.

The film is sort of like a College party movie meets the Twilight Zone but without being as cliché or generic as that sounds.

The Australian guy who was also in The Purge and looks like one of Bret Easton Ellis Bateman bothers (American Psycho/Rules Of Attraction) was creepy in this movie as well even though he was technically supposed to be the nice guy lead.

A meteorite crash lands and releases a strange energy surge blackout that creates time delayed duplicates of people.

I won't go into anymore detail as it would ruin the moive

I bought the Halloween 35th Anniversary Blu-Ray. today. The transfer looks really nice and the new special features are great. This make sme.....5th copy of the original, mostly all bought for special features. I own the 25th Anniversary Anchor Bay 2-disc, I own the 6-Disc box set that has the original on DVD and Blu-Ray (with an awful Blu-Ray transfer), and the Extended Edition, and now the new Blu-Ray.

Check out Reed's Hammer films. His Curse of the Werewolf is downright awesome. Plus there's The Damned and Paranoiac.

Thanks for the recommendations! I just bought this about an hour ago on Amazon. Sadly I had to get the DVD since there hasn't been a Blu-ray release but I can't wait to watch it again.

Honestly I never really considered it to be straight Horror, it has horror elements but it was written, shot and filmed to be an adventure story not a horror film.

i love New Beginning. it's a real crowd pleaser because of the redneck mother and son duo. my best memory of this movie was it playing in our college cafeteria; Halloween eve. everyone was really getting into it/yelling at the screen.

I hated that film, I was just like so the person doing all this is that guy who looks like he's never had a decent meal. Yet he's able to outstrength a guy about 4 times his size etc.
