The Horror Thread - Part 2

That's my TCM marathon finished and Texas Chainsaw 3D is pretty damn atrocious. Starting from the end of the original is so stupid. Not to mention the continuity problems.

Overall a fun experience getting to watch a few movies I hadn't seen before but quite disappointed that none of them really live up to the original.

The 2003 remake being the closest in terms of intensity/scare factor and the rest of them are a little too comedic for my taste.

Now, what's next? :yay:

TC 3D was hilarious not only by the ending but that scene where Leatherface basically said "f*** it" and throws his chainsaw to run away. lol

The 2003 film is my favorite out of all of them even counting the original.

I know. ''Here's your chainsaw cuz, even though you killed like 10 people including all my friends..but hey ho, we're family!''

No matter how many times I've seen the movie, this song gets me every time.

The Halloween franchise was completely screwed long before Zombie came on the scene. Most of that series is awful and it makes pretty much no sense that there is more than one Michael Myers centric film.

True, most of them were pretty bad. Although Part 2 is about as good a sequel as you're likely to get in any movie franchise. And it's not as though the ending of the original doesn't lend itself to a sequel perfectly (although that wasn't John Carpenter's intent, it doesn't make it any less true). And if you absolutely MUST watch more than one, I say watch Parts 1, 2, and H20. That's what I plan to Halloween night.

My Halloween viewing list so far:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Movie
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Series (Seasons 1 through 7)
Stephen King's IT
The Simpsons Tree House Of Horror 5 through 8
Disney's Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow
John Carpenter's The Thing
Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street
A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

I think tomorrow I'll watch Sleepaway Camp & Return To Sleepaway Camp. Maybe Wrestlemaniac. I'll start the Friday The 13th franchise on Friday.

That's what I call the unofficial trilogy. If that were the actual trilogy of films and there were no more I think it'd be damn near perfect. But for what its worth I love Halloween 4 aswell and I just got the blu ray so will be watching that on October 31st seen as though I've watched 1, 2 and H20 (twice) over the past 3 or 4 weeks.

So I ended the night last night with SCREAM and PSYCHO two of the best not only slasher films, but horror related films ever made.

It's crazy to think of how big both of these films affected pop culture and the film industry in general, they both caused a surge of horror in movies and a load of copycats.

Found a awesome fan made trailer for a prequel set before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Grandpa is raising Bubba (Leatherface) and teaching him his future trade.

Check it out.

Scream? One of the best slasher films, sure. One of the best horror films ever made? No

There are far better horror films out there that I feel are way above Scream. It's not a bad movie and I acknowledge what it did pop culture wise, but I don't think it affected the overall film industry.

What an oddly contradictory post.

You recognize that it is one of the best examples of one of the largest and most popular subgenres of horror and yet it is not among the best horror films?

You recognize that it has had a major effect in pop culture yet conversely didn't?

Figs its all about opinion, you can disagree with your opinion but Dark Vengeance consider Scream one of the best horror films. Quite frankly like it or not its very highly regarded, I don't like the Exorcist or Texas Chainsaw Massacre but I'm not gonna say they're not in the category of best horror movies of all time cause it would be nonsense.

Scream reinvigorated not only horror in the mid 90s but it also reinvigorated the slasher for a period.

Yeah that was exactly my point, see you guys can cypher my alien language ;)

Just watched Embrace of the Vampire (2013), a remake of the *ahem* “classic” film that is most known for being the first time the world saw Alyssa Milano naked. Anyway, I never saw that film, but from what I hear it was little more than softcore erotica.

This movie is more of the same. It isn't scary or suspenseful or thrilling. There's a mystery of who the vampire is, since basically everyone in the movie is either brutally cruel to the lead actress or is so nice to her that it becomes creepy (seriously, there are three unconnected guys all stalking her around campus). That also means that virtually nothing vampiric happens for most of the film (a few flashbacks/hallucinations/dreams take the place of any Horror actually taking place in the story...and one guy who is just standing around is stabbed to death for no reason).

This movie is a parade of sexy actresses taking their clothes off or otherwise standing around looking hot. If that and a slight attempt at a Horror story are enough to get you to watch a movie, go for it. Otherwise, skip it.

I've never heard of the lead actress before, but I love her smokey voice. A few characters are just unbelievable cliche' "mean girls" and there is one hazing scene that...if college is actually that rude on one end and naive and stupid on the other, then I fear for our future. Not to mention the fact that one girl's clothing is soaking wet BEFORE she gets a bunch of alcohol poured all over her (guess they filmed the scene more than once).

It is what it is...but don't go in expecting a good movie.

There was nothing contradictory in my post. I was talking about, as you put it, a subgenre, but overall when you count every type of horror film, I don't find it to be high on the list of great ones.

The pop culture mention was simply that the first film became fairly popular, but it in regards to DaRkVeNgeanCe's comment about it changing or affecting the entire film industry in general, I don't see how. Changing or affecting slasher films and only slasher films sure, but not the entire industry.

So you're saying I don't know what an opinion is? I just heavily disagree with Dark's opinion but I do realize he has a right to it. That's fine if some of you find Scream to be one of the best horror films of all time and not just in the slasher genre, but I think people need to watch more horror films.

I agree with you.

Scream is one of my favourite horror movies and movies in general.

Just about to watch a documentary called 'Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of Slasher Film'...

That sounds like an amazing documentary and a documentary hound I am especially if it's horror related, I'm going to try to find it where are you watching it StarLord?

Thanks a bunch! as of right now I'm watching Night of the Demons ('88)

Even the original part 2 had some lame parts. My biggest problems were that...

There seemed like there was only 6 people in a major hospital.

Two of the most perfect shots ever taken on film.

How small is MM supposed to be that he's mistaken for a trick or treater?

I still like it but it did have its issues. IMO the worst Halloween movie was part 5. At least part 4 tried to be scary but 5 started all the stupid humor and I think I remember him going on a date. I blame the Freddy fad, stupid humor in horror, but its still where Halloween took a turn for the worse.

I watched Brides of Dracula yesterday and thought it was downright awesome. Dracula isn't in it but the story, acting and pace are top notch. IMO its the third best vampire film by Hammer. Right up there with Horror of Dracula and Twins of Evil.

(For the uk forumers) Does anyone know why they have been releasing Classic films like 'the shining ' and ' Nightmare on Elms Street' back into cinema's(Cineworld) unfortuantely i missed the shining release cant afford to miss Freddy. This should be a great experience really looking forward to it. For some reason ive never fully watched NOES :whatever: Did anyone in here see these two classics in the cinema.

Who here on these boards agree that...

The Fly (1986) and The Thing (1982) are the two best horror films of the new generation.

Good god, those films are cinematical masterpieces.

So Figs are you saying that I'm not well versed in the horror genre because I think Scream is one of the best slasher films of all time?

I've seen above and beyond more horror films to date than anyone I know and have been an avid fan since I was a young early pre-teen. I've watched all genres of horror but that doesn't make Scream any less of a great film, the fact that I've seen so much bad horror (because let's face it 80% of modern day horror is horrible) makes Scream all that much better of a film in comparison.

I would have to fully agree with you, both are classics and yes both are very enjoyable masterpieces with great re-watch value which makes them even better.

Out of the two films I would say I favor The Thing a tad more just because I love Carpenter's directing so much.
