Looking to do something different for my Halloween marathon in October this month the theme is Anthlogy movies. I know all about creeps how tales from the dark side twilight zone trick r treat tales of Halloween and some others but if anybody can suggest some interesting ones I'd appreciate it.

good plan. I set out to buy as many horror anthologies as possible. they are good marathon fuel.

Terror Tract (starring John Ritter as a really interesting realtor and Bryan Cranston in a darkly humorous tale involving a monkey)

Tales from the Hood (I wish that they had made a follow-up to this one)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc1mL4Qlgq4

Whisper to a Scream (also known as the Offspring starring a very old Vincent Price)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNk-vCZnONQ

Two Evil Eyes (watch this one directly after watching the first Creepshow)

After Midnight (not great but I love the mood and the wraparound story - the second tale is pretty good; involves killer dogs; watch this one directly after Two Evil Eyes)

Campfire Tales (from the scream/I know what you did last summer era is kind of fun)

Anybody know any movies like Red Dawn or its remake... but it's Horror? Sort of like The Road, or even Independence Day but instead of an alien invasion it's a terrorist invasion? Or The Walking Dead but with terrorists instead of zombies?

Kind of an odd request, but I'm drawing a blank here...

have you seen the movie 'Severance?'

Have you seen Body Bags?

Thanks for the suggestion so I think I saw terror track before but it's been awhile

Also if you're looking for another anthology film. There's a new one on Netflix right now called Holidays. 8 segments covering 8 different holidays. I haven't seen it yet but I'm gonna watch it sometime this weekend or coming week.

It covers Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween, Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Also I'm not sure if anybody suggested it but check out Tales of Halloween. I think there's a X-Mas anthology one called A Christmas Horror Story with a few segments.

So I just finally watched Holidays which I mentioned above. Had a few segments I didn't really care for, had some that were decent, but has a couple I really enjoyed a lot. Worth a watch if you like anthologies.

Southbound is on Amazon Prime. Not bad.

Anybody have some good recommendations for 90's to 2000's American horror films? Preferrably ones that aren't the usual suspects (mainstream / popular)? I'm looking for some hidden gems.

Sorry for the late reply but check out Demon Knight. As it happens its actually a Tales from the Crypt spin off film but its a whole lot of fun with some really neat effects.

I find Night Train To Terror very entertaining.

31- A Rob Zombie Film :
Well, as some of you know, I'm not the biggest supporter of Rob Zombie. I found his early music good, but most everything in the last decade or so I haven't been a big fan of. I liked House of 1000 Corpses, and loved The Devil's Rejects, but everything from there was down hill. Halloween I disliked, H2 I hated, and Lords of Salem had a couple decent moments, but mostly dragged and eventually stumbled into the nonsensical. To say I wasn't expecting anything highly from this film would be underselling my expectations. As it turns out I wasn't wrong to set my expectations so low...but that doesn't mean what I saw was necessarily bad.

31 is probably Zombie's best, in my own opinion, since The Devil's Rejects, maybe Halloween if you liked that one. That isn't to say it's a complex movie, far from it in fact. The story can be summed up in a couple sentences: A group of people who work for some sort of fair or carnival are traveling back home on Halloween. After encountering a road block, they are taken hostage and forced to fight for their life in a 12-hour game called 31.

Forgive me that I don't recall the character names of most of the main cast. They aren't generic, they've got their own qualities, but I only recall Sheri Moon Zombie as Charlie, since they scream her name a few times, and Meg Foster as Venus, because I'm just going off memory here. There's 3 guys, one kind of sideshow performer who seems like a pretty average guy, the second a cool, laid back Jamaican guy, and the third a older black guy who sort of puts on the cowboy attitude. The killers are....sort of one note. There's Sick-Head, a little person latino, who paints himself like and idolizes Adolf Hitler. There's Schizo-Head and Psycho-Head, two brothers dressed like clowns with chainsaws. There's Sex Head and Death Head, a small sexy woman (played by E.G. Daily of all people, aka Tommy Pickles from Rugrats.) and a large German Man, both wearing white shirts and tutus. Lastly, there's Doom-Head, the most fleshed out killer, who we still learn very little about, but get a lot of his personality. In character he seems very insane, but when we see him briefly in his home, he seems like a pretty regular guy. There's also a group of older people, two older woman, and one man (played by Malcolm McDowell) who are bidding on the five victims for some unknown purpose. I think they were some sort of Satanists, as we see a lit up pentagram table they are betting on, but otherwise, they just seem to like screwing with people.

It's a pretty simply, pretty brutal movie. The characters are interesting enough that I wanted to see them make it, and the villains are vile enough to want to see them get taken down. That is except Doom-Head, because Doom-Head was awesome. Everything was done practically, so no CGI blood or obvious CGI stunts.

There's a couple problems that stand out, besides the one note killers. first off, the cinematography is all over the place. In one particular fight, the jump cuts were so bad, it was hard to tell what was going on. Things were happening, but it was so fast, and shaky, I couldn't follow very well. The next thing, and I stress this for anyone with even mild epilepsy: there is a scene that goes on for several minutes, with the brightest strobe effects I've ever seen in a film, and while they occasionally cut away, it's never long enough for my eyes to readjust before being assaulted again. There's still more shakey cam in other places, and it was frustrating, since I was actually pretty engaged in the film.

So here's one of my last problems: Sheri Moon Zombie. She's not bad, her acting is pretty well better than all the other films I've seen her in. The problem is, in terms of Rob's films, even the ones I don't like, she's kind of overused. I mean every movie she has to have some major part (hell, H2 shoehorned her in in the stupidest way yet.), and knowing she was a main character here, and one of the good guys, I just couldn't care since I was sure she'd make it to the end. She's not the worst, but it's like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, I like them both, but it wears very, very thin after a while together.

I'd also like to add the ending is somewhat open ended. There's some resolution, but it's probably left how it is for Zombie to do a sequel down the line. I'd have liked a little more closure, or at least a little more backstory to the people hosting the game.

So, overall, I actually did enjoy myself despite the flaws. It's far from perfect, and doesn't quite reach The Devil's Rejects or House of 1000 Corpses, but it's got some good points, and some good characters. The effects work is good, while I wasn't a huge fan of the factory setting, there are set pieces that were nice. My overall rating of the film would be 6.5/10 .

TL;DR 6.5/10

I liked 'A Christmas Horror Story.'

I hated 'Southbound.'

I thought that Holidays was mostly bad but showed the Easter and New Years segments to a co-worker; because they were weird.

Holidays was ok for me, I felt like every story had potential but more than half of them were over when I felt like they were just starting. The only story that really delivered was Easter, and maybe Halloween even though the way that one was set up didn't feel like it made sense when the twist was revealed.

i understand what you mean about Halloween. this is that style of storytelling that somewhat annoyed me in the V/H/S movies. I just go into modern anthologies (which is basically V/H/S and ABC's of Death) with low expectations.

You mentioned A Christmas Horror Story above. That actually turned out to be a really solid movie. The only story I didn't like is the one with the kids under the school, as it felt like a slightly Christmas-y/religious take on a ghost story and nothing really happened. The rest were all pretty good to me. Along with Krampus, I think this is going to be a holiday tradition for me.

That's about how I felt.

Didn't like St. Patrick's, Easter, Mother's Day, or Halloween (despite generally being a big Smith fan).

Liked Father's Day, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.

Valentine's Day wasn't great, but I think it was a really good way to establish what we were getting into.

If anybody questions whether or not to watch "The Houses October Built" on NetFlix..skip it. It was a horrible found footage horror flick.

Found footage needs to die.

Even in the few movies I like that include it, I see no reason why it's needed. Take the Visit (yes, M. Night Shymalan actually made a decent movie again) for example. Why is it found footage? Could we not just see it through conventional means? Does it really add anything?

It's a gimmick that has run its course.

It has become its own genre of sorts and just like any genre there will always be a large amount if not the majority that is crap and shouldn't have been made.

I absolutely love found footage films but can honestly say a large portion of them are terrrrible but I still watch them, just like how people still watch terrible d grade horror films.
