Horror The Horror Thread - Part 7

Slasher is my favourite sub genre of horror, it doesn’t scare me but then nothing does. I just find horror cool, always have, the 80s is the gold standard that will never be topped. Halloween (1978) is the GOAT of horror.

I personally find most supernatural films boring, it’s a rare occasion when one wins me over like the Conjuring.

Slashers can be kind of dull. Generic slasher movies depend mostly on characters making dumb decisions and the killer having ridiculous plot armor. Possession movies can be formulaic also.

I've always thought a sundown town horror film would be scary and seeing one in Lovecraft Country made me even more convinced that one of those towns would make a good horror film location.

After years and years of watching horror films, I realized one key element for me is the atmosphere of them. When a horror film can take you out from where you are physically and can transport you into a place that you can see yourself in, that's when it grabs me. Is really hard to explain. A really well made dark/rainy/isolated/abandoned place with good cinematography just puts me in the right mood.

I think every horror subgenre can be dull or generic or so.
Its the nature of it i assume.
You get used to the tropes and stuff.
A lot relys on making characters act "unrealistic" or so to work.
But thats the case for every genre of movie or tv show.

Personally, im fine with horror movies using the same formulas over and over...yeah it would be neat if they would break out more, but for me, the most important is that im entertained by good kills, jump scares etc and that they visually can sell me the atmosphere and all.

Absolutly, im all for atmosphere and feeling.
Horror films may not be able to scare me too much anymore, but here and there they are able to bring the atmosphere and feeling i seek.
And that is for me the most important part, because it sets the mood and entertains me.

Anyway...

For Day 4 of my Marathon, i watched Bones (2001)
Its been a while and i really had forgotten how the movie sadly dropped the ball.
There is a lot of potential in the idea and all...but the movie very fast turns more into a comedy.
Snoop Dogg as a undead pimp who goes around killing people, sounds cool...but they turn this way too goofy and wanted too much.
It runs out of breath towards the end, which is a shame.

31 Nights of Halloween has fallen behind already.

01. Repulsion
02. The Cabin in the Woods
03. Night of the Creeps
04. The Tingler

I wonder what it was like experiencing Percepto in person. Or any Castle's gimmicked movies. These old films can be so goofy but still work.

I’ve been doing quite well, although some nights I watch TV episodes instead of films.

Day 1 - Hellfest 7.5/10
Day 2 - Creepshow S1x1
Day 3 - Devil (2010) 7/10 , The Rental (2020) 5.5/10
Day 4 - Creepshow S1x2, S1x3
Day 5 - The Monster Squad 8.5/10

I’ve also been watching episode of RL Stone’s the Haunting Hour, yeah it’s kiddie/teen horror but as a fan of Are You Afraid of the Dark & Goosebumps growing up it works for me as an easy watch.

Yeah Random Acts of Violence was okay, but I wasn't crazy about it either. It had some really good gore in it though and a nice, dark atmosphere, but I thought the story was very messy and I didn't care for the ending either.

I also just recently watched Scare Me on Shudder and really enjoyed it, but considering how you might feel about horror comedies it could be subjective. Aya Cash AKA Stormfront is great in it though.

1. Scarecrows Revenge
2. Alive
3. Frankensteins Army
4. Bones

5. Haunt

Heard a lot of good about Haunt, and i can agree.
Was really nice with a interesting setting.

03. Night of the Creeps
04. The Tingler
05. Bloodsucking Bastards

I do enjoy watching this movie. Good, dumb fun.

Tonight’s film, another favorite of mine. And one of Carpenter’s best films. Again picture taken off my tv

Such a fantastic film. It's definitely in my top 5, although my list is always shuffling and I always have a hard time actually making a list because of that.

For right now, my top 5 Carpenter films are

Halloween
The Thing
Big Trouble In Little China
They Live
The Fog

31 Nights of Halloween

01. Repulsion
02. The Cabin in the Woods
03. Night of the Creeps
04. The Tingler
05. Bloodsucking Bastards
06. Vampires vs The Bronx

Sleep escapes me, so getting a movie in early. This was pretty entertaining, and not just because I'm a NYer.

First 5 in the books...

31 Day Horror Marathon 2020
Day 1 | Host (3.5/5)
Day 2 | Amulet (3/5)
Day 3 | Sputnik (3.5/5)
Day 4 | Vampires vs. the Bronx (3.5/5)
Day 5 | The Other Lamb (4/5)

1. Scarecrows Revenge
2. Alive
3. Frankensteins Army
4. Bones
5. Haunt

6.Boar

For what it is, a australian horror movie about a huge killer boar...it was neat.
The first half was nicely done, the cgi and practical effects looked the part.
The mood was there and all.

But in the second half it falls apart because the outback doesnt give you that much in terms of setting.
The cgi and practical effects loose their appeal after half the movie because from there on out, it just isnt on the same level as in the beginning.
The pacing also tends to go weird, some shots and scenes are way too long for as little as they do.
And there is no actor who can carry the movie further.
Animal horror movies can tend to have those problems.

Anyway, since im getting into the mood of watching people stream dead by daylight, i kept thinking how neat a dead by daylight movie series would be.
There are some really cool killers in the game and i think that would be a cool idea to have a bunch of slasher movies based on the characters.

Glorious film.

Did anyone watch the ''In Search of Darkness'' documentary? I thought it was rather disappointing. If you're an 80s horror buff then most of it is old hat.

That guy from the Dead Meat YouTube channel sounded like he was reading cue cards and it just came across as odd.

Yeah and I agree, I think it’s fine for one to have on in the background but they had so much to get through that they don’t spend enough time on each film.

Part II looks a bit more in depth?

Also, Eli Roth's History of Horror Season 2 starts Saturday...

I really liked the atmosphere, trippy visuals and practical effects in Boar, but I'd put both Razorback and Dark Age over it which is another Australian creature feature with a giant crocodile. Rogue is superior to all three IMO, but as far as killer croc movies go Dark Age isn't talked about enough which is a shame because its easily one of the best out there and I've always enjoyed it ever since I first saw it as a kid.

I also recommend checking out Razorback from 1984. That's one that's also really atmospheric with trippy visuals and heavy on practical effects.

I've never heard of that one.

Yeah most people haven't but its definitely worth checking out if your ever in a mood for an atmospheric, 80's creature feature in the vein of something like Alligator 1980. It's also one of John Jarrett's earlier roles who was Mick Taylor in the Wolf Creek movies.
