Slashers can be kind of dull. Generic slasher movies depend mostly on characters making dumb decisions and the killer having ridiculous plot armor. Possession movies can be formulaic also.
I've always thought a sundown town horror film would be scary and seeing one in Lovecraft Country made me even more convinced that one of those towns would make a good horror film location.
I think every horror subgenre can be dull or generic or so.
Its the nature of it i assume.
You get used to the tropes and stuff.
A lot relys on making characters act "unrealistic" or so to work.
But thats the case for every genre of movie or tv show.
Personally, im fine with horror movies using the same formulas over and over...yeah it would be neat if they would break out more, but for me, the most important is that im entertained by good kills, jump scares etc and that they visually can sell me the atmosphere and all.
After years and years of watching horror films, I realized one key element for me is the atmosphere of them. When a horror film can take you out from where you are physically and can transport you into a place that you can see yourself in, that's when it grabs me. Is really hard to explain. A really well made dark/rainy/isolated/abandoned place with good cinematography just puts me in the right mood.
Absolutly, im all for atmosphere and feeling.
Horror films may not be able to scare me too much anymore, but here and there they are able to bring the atmosphere and feeling i seek.
And that is for me the most important part, because it sets the mood and entertains me.
Anyway...
For Day 4 of my Marathon, i watched
Bones (2001)
Its been a while and i really had forgotten how the movie sadly dropped the ball.
There is a lot of potential in the idea and all...but the movie very fast turns more into a comedy.
Snoop Dogg as a undead pimp who goes around killing people, sounds cool...but they turn this way too goofy and wanted too much.
It runs out of breath towards the end, which is a shame.
