The Horror Thread - Part 7

giphy.gif

Gotta disagree, that sh** is a classic.
Okay, the play is going under review. :funny: I'm legitimately curious in what you like about it, I know a good amount of people love it, but I just don't get it. What's your take?

It's essentially Assault on Precinct 13 with Vampires. The Carpenter influence is all over and I loved David Slade's directing not to mention the cinematography. Sure most of the side characters aren't really well developed, but the main cast is incredible. Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, and Ben Foster are at their best in it.

Also the designs of the vampires and how they operate are some of my favorite interpretations of vampires. it just makes sense for them to live up north for the sun not to burn them up.

I always loved how ruthless the vampires where in 30 Days of Night as well as their menacing designs plus the location is just awesome and all around super atmospheric. I know it was actually shot in New Zealand, but it really did look and feel like a desolated and isolated Alaskan town.

Someone on here said it before, but when it comes to horror films at least for me atmosphere and location are definitely the most important things to get right and Slade really nailed those elements IMO.

I understand how it might not work for some though.

I'm very much a 20th century man , and my favorite Horror films are the Universal classic films made nearly 100 years ago:

Dracula
Frankenstein
The Wolfman
The Invisible man

I first saw them as a child on AMC in the late 80s and early 90s, and they've stayed with me ever since.

Other than those , An American Werewolf in London is my other favorite.

The fourth(cant call it last anymore :D) is better imo than the third and would work well enough as a end of the franchise.
Maybe because wasnt too into the meta aspect of Scream 3.
Either way, it is a franchise that holds up quite nicely, you cant always say that when it comes to slasher/horror franchises.
It works the best if you let it sit for a few years and forgot who the killer is and all...that adds a lot to the charm of it.

I don't know if I have the strength this year for that. I've already completely failed Jacktober and Inktober when it comes to drawing...

It might not be for everybody, but wow His House on Netflix is easily my favorite horror film to come out this year and will definitely end up in my top 5 of the year overall. Such a great little surprise and I love that I knew nothing about it going in. I very much recommend it if your into those kind of supernatural horror flicks.

Two new additions below from last night. Going to be wrapping up tonight with 4 movies, 2 of which I haven't seen along with 2 favorites from the past decade. Unfortunately ran out of time to see some other movies that I would've liked to have watched in October, but I guess I'll save them for next year.

1. Pyscho Goreman [2020] 8/10
2. Alone [2020] 9/10
3. The Cleansing Hour [2020] 7/10
4. Fried Barry [2020] 4/10
5. Unearth [2020] 8/10
6. Aenigma [1987] 6/10
7. Brahms: The Boy II 7/10
8. Child's Play [2019] 5/10
9. Winchester [2018] 7/10
10. Children of the Corn [1984] 7/10
11. Hotel Transylvania 3 5/10
12. Graveyard Shift [1990] 6/10

Decently entertaining movie, even if it was flawed in execution. I always like older movies like these where they still used practical effects to deliver the monster and gore scenes, since too many movies nowadays are over-reliant on CGI. My major complaints with the movie were that it didn't start out great and the first half didn't really seem to fit, and there were too many cutaways from the monster so it was never fully revealed. Good production values though, and a properly creepy atmosphere once it got going.

13. House of 1000 Corpses 4/10

So I had never seen a Rob Zombie movie before until this one, and have to say it was a relative disappointment and sorta got annoying too. There wasn't much of a plot, and I kinda had to make myself keep watching, because it just got boring. The music video-style editing and negative-colored "flashing" shots were the main things that I found annoying about it. Finally, the "shock" ending sorta came out nowhere and lacked impact, when it could've had more impact. Overall sort of a forgettable movie and don't think I'll ever be watching it again.

30. Silence of the Lambs

Just watched the Invisible Man, absolutely loved it. At first I thought it was going to be more of a home invasion type movie but they threw that out early on. The film took twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. It was super tense from the get to which is down to the direction & the way it was filmed. It had me on edge from the start and I thought it some great action beats too. Just all around a really brilliant horror thriller with Sci Fi elements.

30. Silence of the Lambs
31. Halloween

May the Devil Take You and May the Devil Take You Chapter Two are officially the best unofficial Evil Dead inspired films out there. I'd put both easily above that remake that came out in 2013 which I didn't hate, but still found to be massively overrated and just forgettable honestly outside of the gory bits. To me it actually feels like Sam Raimi is behind the camera for these movies, but its not and I love the Indonesian style/flavor added to them.

They are definitely worth checking out if your a fan of the Evil Dead franchise IMO.

13. House of 1000 Corpses 4/10
14. Pet Sematary [1989] 5/10

So I hadn't seen this yet before and since I saw last year's 2019 remake during its theatrical run, wanted to check the original out. After seeing the 1989 original, I think I'd have to say I prefer the 2019 remake over it. I guess the 1989 movie is fine for what it is, and it's not "terrible" per se, but I felt it was a merely passable movie and very average. Although it had its share of moments, as a film it came across as shoddily made overall and didn't "flow" very well, with the writing contributing to story beats & scenes that made no sense. The 2019 movie, on the other hand, flowed a lot better and didn't have the same problem with scenes not making sense. Also I feel that the 2019 movie, even though it's not great either, is just better-made, with better cinematography, better acting, better music & sound, better atmosphere (as in properly dark & creepy throughout), and IMO, a creepier cat playing Church. Not that 1989's resurrected Church cat wasn't creepy, but 2019's resurrected Church cat has it all over 1989's as the superior creepy cat. For context, I'd probably rate the 2019 movie at 7/10.

15. Silver Bullet [1985] 7/10

I hadn't seen this movie before yet either and was pleasantly surprised at how much better-made it was than the 1989 Pet Sematary, as it was clearly better and more tightly written, with more solid and 3D characters, a cast that was actually likeable, better directing, and a more effective tone/atmosphere. I think this is now the oldest movie I've seen Gary Busey in, so it was initially jarring to see him look so young, but clearly he's been chewing scenery ever since then. :p This movie was pretty much an entertaining, if sometimes a bit campy, thrill ride that was just plain fun to watch, even though it sorta became predictable. I'll definitely watch this one again! This movie also made me realize that we need more werewolf movies in the horror genre. The last one I saw was The Wolfman from 2010 which was actually pretty good, and I watched that last year. About time for a new werewolf movie I think!

16. The Witch [2015] 10/10

I first saw this movie during its theatrical run, and because the dialog was spoken entirely in Olde English, I missed quite a bit of it. That said, I loved the film on that first viewing and finally bought the Blu-Ray last year when it was discounted during Black Friday 2019.

So tonight was my second viewing on Blu-Ray with subtitles, which allowed me to catch all of the dialog this time. And seeing it at home on Blu-Ray really let me appreciate the movie that much more, and made me realize that this movie is just masterfully made in pretty much every aspect. Everything about it is just so on point and artfully done, and for me it's a perfect encapsulation of a 17th century "period" horror movie. Absolutely love this movie and will watch it every year.

I was hoping to also watch The Conjuring from 2013 tonight, which is a film that I also love and one of my favorites in the genre, but since it's getting late, think I'll just call it a night. That's all for me this year! Although I'll probably do another "horror" movie round in January 2021. ;)

What better way to end this years marathon with Trick r Treat.
Its no wonder it has gained such a following, its just that damn good.

Looking at my list, im a bit sad that ive gone more the traditional route and not dared more.
There was this horror movie with the walruss or so i wanted to try, wanted more monster movies, but found myself being drawn to the good old the farther the month progressed.
But thats in the end not the worst, since most are just good horror movies that i enjoy every time.

31. The Return of the Living Dead (Scream Factory release)

Ending the season with a helping hahas and a mouthful of BRAINS! And only a few hours later than I planned (D&D ran longer than expected). I sat throught a 10 hour long midnight movie marathon Halloween 2014 just to see The Return of the Living Dead on the big screen. Seeing Evil Dead II and Bride of Frankenstein didn't hurt, but the movie I went to see was The Return of the Living Dead.

I'll be looking into these now, never even heard of them before.

Looking at my list, im a bit sad that ive gone more the traditional route and not dared more.
I feel the same in a fashion. I have a pile of horror films at least 50 deep in my unwatched DVD/BD boxes and I only got through 9. And some of them I've already watched at some point, so I didn't try much new. I definitely stretched myself way too thin as this was the only marathon I attempted that I completed, failing in the my art attempts. This has just been a rough year all around so I just kind of kept it simple when watching flicks the last 3 months of marathons.

Maybe I'll get my **** together for the last 2 months of the year and really put a dent in my collection.

Oh, wow, I forgot to finish my list.

27. Nocturne (2020)
Nocturne_Banner.jpg

This completed "Welcome to the Blumhouse." As with the rest of this collection, the highlight is the acting. Sidney Sweeney is clearly on a rapid rise to stardom, and Madison Iseman keeps up opposite her as twin sisters operating in fairly well-treaded thriller territory. This is probably the least original of the four, but its overall enjoyable, even if the well-paced build-up reaches the obvious conclusion in an incredibly unsatisfying way. I'll probably never come back to it, unless it's to reminisce about Sweeney's early films years down the line. 3 / 5

28. Grave Encounters (2011)
tumblr_mtxpxb90zA1rc6jvuo1_400.gifv

After "Houses October Built," I decided to look for more suggestions of good Found Footage, since it gets hated on so much but "Houses" got me in the mood for more. This one came up a lot. I'm a sucker for getting spooked in the dark, so this one was REALLY stressing me out. But it works best when its the little things. By the time the haunt kicks into full gear, I felt it kind of jumped the shark. 3 / 5

29. Session 9 (2001)
oth5g-.gif

I'm honestly shocked I don't see this talked about more. This is without a doubt one of the most atmospheric horror films I've ever seen. The abandoned asylum they were able to shoot this in is absolutely incredible. That sight, coupled with the blue collar motivations of the characters, makes this story feel authentic on a level few genre works ever reach. And as I've mentioned before, it's fairly easy to freak me out. I jump at everything. But very few movie moments truly HAUNT me. Simon, though.... That final line always sticks with me for days. Some of the most chilling delivery anywhere. 5 / 5

30. Truth Seekers (2020)
tenor.gif

I see Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, I watch. Sadly, their interaction in the eight episodes of "Truth Seekers" is fairly minimal. Frost is the star here, and Samson Kayo makes an apt replacement for Pegg as his primary sparring partner. This is very much in the same vibe as the Cornetto Trilogy - comedy within authentically composed genre formats. The horror is well-done, the comedy is mostly hit, though its not near as funny as past Frost/Pegg colabs. I hope we get a renewal, if only for more of Malcom McDowell acting out of type as Frost's clueless father-in-law. 3.5 / 5

31. Trick r Treat (2012)
GlossyFocusedFlyingfish-size_restricted.gif

The epitome of the Halloween night movie. There were only a handful of really scary moments for me, but its so delightfully atmospheric and just good old fashioned macabre fun. So basically the perfect Halloween movie. It's not perfect, but it's great at what it does. It also makes me wish we had more movies tying into the origins of Halloween/Samhain. 4.5 / 5

So that was my first 31 Days. Some beloved classics, some new favorites and some duds.

Honestly,I don't watch many current horror films anymore. In fact, with there being a few exceptions,I haven't watched much since the early 2000's. My favorite time for horror is the 70's and 80's. I'm a MASSIVE fan of the 80's especially, but I love anything from the silent horror of the 20's up untill the late 90's/early 2000's.

Thanks to HBO Max, I'm watching through the Leprechaun series, which I haven't seen before.

I'd like to know how this franchise made it to 8 movies. I mean, the first movie was passable entertainment, but it's all been going downhill from there. How and why did they keep making these? Was there actually a fanbase for these movies in the 90s?

Also there's like no continuity between the movies. The titular leprechaun got properly killed at the end of both 2 and 3, yet he's brought back at the beginning of the next movie with no explanation of how he survived.

Btw Leprechaun 4 is such a shameful rip-off of Aliens. :o
