The Grudge 2 kinda tried that.

The idea of The Ring was that Samara's parents couldn't conceive a child and went to get the help of someone involved in voo doo or the dark arts to help them conceive in a very unnatural way and that's why Samara turned out the way she did.
I thought that was great...until The Ring Two completely destroyed it with an idiotic backstory that ruined Samara's mystique all together.

Has there every been a ghost movie that uses the ghost's backstory to reveal something horrid about his/her past, and the protagonist? That seems the best way to use a ghost.

Yeah. Problem is, most of those movies just devolve into jump scares. It's annoying. The Woman in Black and Mama come to mind.

You should read the books.... where everything happened during the first two books inside a computer trying to figure out how to solve the Samara problem.

Also wanted to say how badass "Poltergeist" still is. Watched it last night for the first time years. Ain't another supernatural movie that can stack up to it. The closest was "The Ring".

I was horribly afraid of Chucky when I was younger, he was just so freaky looking and it scarred me. Since then I have grown to like it, it's not scary but it's something fun. The new one looks decent, I don't know about that CGI face though.

Thirteen Ghosts kind of, sort of did this with a very brief history on each of the ghosts and the connection to the family.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought. I honestly don't know what I'd consider the best long-running Horror series in terms of being consistently good or fair.

... Maybe Halloween is the closest? (And that's not saying anything.)

EDIT: I got it! Final Destination is pretty consistent throughout all five films, I think. I'd even consider 5 one of the very best.

I would still put F13th over most because there were 4 good movies before hitting a bump at 5. Then zombie Jason took over and was still pretty good for 2 movies.

Halloween 5 had MM go out on a date and I just can't forgive that.

I would go back to the Hammer Frankenstein movies as being the best. Its pretty much The Reanimator and always found a way to end up being cool. Part 2 was my favorite because you almost think he's turned into a good person because he's started up a hospital for the poor. Then you find out the people are missing limbs.

I saw the Maniac remake last Friday night. Man that was certainly an experience. The movie never failed to engage but damn was it uncomfortable at times, which you know, was the point. There was something about it that was quite hypnotic. The first person view I think really enhanced the film rather than just being a gimmick. The original has that element of the killer's voice over and ever present breathing so the first person view really feels like an extension of that carrying to its completely bonkers conclusion.

Mama in particular really felt hindered by the forced in jump scares. If it had just been allowed to tell its story and just kind of be a bit of a dark fairy tale rather than really trying to shoe horn it into be a horror film it would be a far stronger film.

sort of, i guess. but only because of nostalgia. i'm expecting it to be subpar. what i'm looking forward to the mos is the (probably going to be subpar) horror anthology tv series that Jamie Foxx is putting out on the Syfy channel; this coming October.

all i remember from that movie is Nilbog and the kid peeing all over the dinner table. that's not to say that it's bad, though. my favorite lame movie is Silver Bullet. it's a werewolf movie aimed at kids. but i find it highly watchable. there are some geniune moments of suspense within. plus, Gary Busey.
