Gary Ross Is Official To Direct

Gary Ross' deal to direct Lionsgate's adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult tome "The Hunger Games" is all but done, with the director showing up at the company's AFM splash to plug the high-profile project.

Ross, whose helming credits include "Seabiscuit" and "Pleasantville," joined producer Nina Jacobson in discussing their vision for the event pic, one of the most buzzed-about titles at AFM. Jacobson is producing through her Color Force banner, which secured the rights to produce the movie and set it up with Lionsgate last year.

Lionsgate's international sales arm, headed by Helen Kim, is selling foreign rights. Buyers are showing keen interest, with territory deals already starting to close.

Collins is penning the adapted screenplay. Scribe Billy Ray has been polishing.

The first in Collins' trilogy, "The Hunger Games" takes place in a society in which districts pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl who are forced to fight to the death on live TV.

Second tome, "Catching Fire," was published last year. The final book in the trilogy, "Mockingjay," came out earlier this year.

Among his other credits, Ross also performed a rewrite on "Spider-Man 4" for Columbia.

I've only read the first book, ain't what I'm really into but is an ok book to say the least and it should be a interesting one to see how they're going to adapting it.

just finished the book series and i would really like to see a good film version of it.

for some reason when I think of Haymitch the only one i can think of as casting is House.

I Think a good Katniss could be Seychelle Gabriel

even tho she was in the crappy TLA she is still a good actress

Whoever said Hugh Laurie you are amazing and I now will always listen to what you said. Its nice that Suzanne is writing the first draft on the script, I think more adaptions should do this.

i agree. who knows the material better than her?

i also hope they portray it as dark as the book is. the Games themselves should be a mess, not lightened up

i think Lucas Till who will play Havok in x men first class would make a great peeta he is only 20

That's one thing im concerned about, this movie has to tread very closly to being R rated for it to be faithful. The Tracker-Jacker sequence alone will be graphic not mention a few of the kills. It's going to be interesting to see how they show it and if the do it faithfully.

Oh and Til looks the part but I wouldn't be suprised if we see them go for the kid from I AM NUMBER FOUR.

^ that will be hard because i believe most fans want alex for city of bones "mortal instruments" another YA Novel adaption

Well fans rarely have a say in casting. haha Except Batman they listened to us about Bale.

I just finished the book and at the moment I'm liking the idea of Hailee Steinfeld as Katniss.

Game on! Lionsgate has announced to EW that The Hunger Games, the highly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ futuristic YA thriller about scrapper Katniss Everdeen and her fight to survive a brutal reality TV contest, will be released on March 23, 2012. Director Gary Ross recently revealed to EW that he aims to go into production of the first installment of Collins’ trilogy later this spring.

Yes! I was hoping we didn't have to wait until 2013.

Nice, first news we have heard about this in a bit.

i'm excited. can't wait until more news starts to come out

Lucas Till wouldnt make a bad Peeta, neither would the guy Project862006 posted, although I don't know who he is.

Stilll can't decide who I'd want for Katniss yet.

I want Kristen Chenowith for Effie Trinket though
