The "I Bought and I Thought" thread for Nov.1st

1.) I can't spell.

2.) Owning noobs is a good thing. As in "52 is owning noobs in all kinds of ways." Like in Halo when you no scope the whole opposing time, and the whiney 11 year old is screaming because you have the sniper? That my friend is in essence the very nature of 52.

And the cover to this week's issue was the best yet.

To those who read the most recent issue of Uncanny or even Exiles; who is that member of the Imperial Guard who looks like a dark-blue/grey Colossus?

Good lord, Black Canary pwned in JLA. I ****ing love BC, glad to see Meltzer give her some love and pwning Hal Jordan in the same sequence. Gotta love it.

The new arc in Adjectiveless X-men being written by Carey deals with completely new villains that have so far not been connected to any established characters or past storylines and it has been quite good so far IMO. What is no one reading that?

it's also pretty much the only X title that recognizes that all the characters in the x-men books LIVE in the same MANSION. In Adjectiveless Cyclops, Emma, Beast, Wolvie, the New X-men kids, and O*N*E characters, all show up here and there and take part in the story. Unlike Astonishing which acts like the 6 main characters are THE only X-men there are.
My reasons:

1). Been away from core X-titles too long
2). Carey's stuff has been hit or miss for me.
3). Bachelo's art ranges from high suck to low suck for action comics for me
4). The team roster seems to be the result of a malfunction of the "Random Team Generator". Lady Mastermind, really? No one I care about enough to buy a book for at this point.

If I gave "picks of the week", they'd be for Agents of Atlas #4, Ant-Man #2 and Beyond! #5. All Marvel books, proving that no matter what happens to the A-Listers and how much one may not care for the EIC style, Marvel will always produce SOME great books. DETECTIVE was also good, just not as good as the above three (but proving that "fill-ins" are, gasp, as good or bad as the person you hire for 'em). 52 and BLUE BEETLE were "meh", only 52 has a better excuse. Warsong #3 is the easy "turd" of the week for me.

Crazy though, Bachalo's art looks pretty tight on X-Men, at least from what ive seen.

Then he must be in a rush to meet deadlines. Usually when his work is so rushed that it takes, literally, 2-8 inkers, his work is tighter because he simply falls backs on fundamentals and doesn't get fancy. If you want to see how fuddled "Bachelo left to his devices" looks, just look at the first issue or so of the last AOA mini.

I just can't stomach Bachelo's style on X-Men. The cover with sabretooth looking all hunch back was atrocious!:cmad:

Bachalo's art on X-Men is anything but tight. It's not as bad as the AoA mini, but it's still not that great. The only reason I can stomach it now is because I know how bad it can really get, like the aformention AoA revisit, and this time you can at least make out a majority of what's going on, but not by much. Like, don't even bother trying to figure out what's going on whenever Cannonball's using his powers. There's maybe one issue out of his stuff that I'd call decent, but the rest are just meh. And yes, he's using 6 inkers on this run, so yeah, it's rushed, which I'm sure I can thank for the lack of filler crap clogging up the panels.

I think it came out last week:huh: I remember buying a new DD ish really recently, anyway:huh:

Indeed this is an awesome arc but the art sucks :(

It's deffinatly a great arc.

Bachalo's art bothers me much less here than he normally does.

Paul O'Brien got in a good rant about adverts this week at his www.thexaxis.com site. I'll repost it here:

Paul O'Brien said:
Happy New Year! Yes, in the warped world of comic book indicia, it's now January 2007. And we all know what a new month means - a whole new set of adverts!

You can probably guess where this is heading, can't you?

In October 2005, Marvel shipped a month of comics containing a frankly outrageous quantity of adverts. In some books, the adverts actually outnumbered the story in terms of page count. Not surprisingly, there were complaints. Adverts are distracting, quite intentionally. They disrupt the flow of the story. A certain amount can be screened out, but when the adverts outnumber the story pages, you've got a real problem in terms of readability. The quality of the product is seriously compromised.

Marvel apologised, and cheerfully announced that it wouldn't be happening again the next month. Of course, on a close reading, that was partly because they just didn't have as many advertisers lined up for next month. But still, they acknowledged the problem. They apologised to readers. Joe Quesada ended up telling Newsarama that it wouldn't happen again.

Now, if recent history is anything to go by, Marvel will probably deny that they ever said any such thing. So, just for reference, here's the passages.

Joe Quesada, on 21 October 2005:-

"We're very aware of the problem, and we're going to rectify it. ... We've heard the fans and will make sure that their reading experience is the number one priority and not the ads. They will be seeing short and long-term resolutions in the next couple of weeks."

Joe Quesada, on 11 November 2005:-

"We've been looking to resolve this as quickly as we can, which is why I'm proud to say that come December, all our books go back to their normal page counts. And in the future, if we ever find ourselves in this sort of dilemma again, we will place the bulk of the ads towards the back of the books so as to interrupt the stories as little as possible."

I'll just repeat that last bit in case you didn't get it.

"In the future, if we ever find ourselves in this sort of dilemma again, we will place the bulk of the ads towards the back of the books so as to interrupt the stories as little as possible."

Well, once again we have a vast quantity of adverts this month, and it turns out Joe Quesada was not telling the truth. No effort whatsoever has been made to group the adverts at the back of the book. Not only that, but Marvel themselves have made the situation even worse. This comic contains 23 pages of adverts between the first and last page of a 22 page story. Of those adverts, one is a double-page house ad for Incredible Hulk, one is a full-page house ad for newuniversal, one is a half-page house ad for Iron Fist, and one is a half-page house ad for Bullet Points. The half pagers may just about be forgivable, because they're needed to fill out the page due to the dimensions of the paid advertisements. But three pages of house ads in the middle of a 22-page story already fit to burst with adverts? A full spread house ad in a story that already contains no less than three double-spread paid ads? Are they on crack?

Nobody could seriously argue that this story is unimpaired by the adverts. Take, for example, page 15 of the story. It's a big explosion that's meant to be a cool, dramatic moment. But it's stranded miles away from any sort of context - the preceding two pages are adverts, and so are the next three.

Here's the thing. Marvel acknowledged, just twelve months ago, that this was unacceptable. They accepted that it damaged the quality of their product. They claimed to have heard the complaints. They said that if they had this many adverts again, they'd group them at the back.

Well, so much for Marvel's word.

And do you know, it's the strangest thing. Because Marvel love quality. They tell us so, every time one of their flagship titles is running several months late. It's because something unexpected has come up, yet again, and Marvel is willing to stick with the creators, because they care so much about quality.

Heaven forfend anyone should suggest that Marvel has a chronic lateness problem because they indulge primadonnas who think their Jerry Bruckheimer story is Citizen Kane; artists who somehow find time to draw magazine covers when their regular title is six months late; and TV writers who put their TV work first and have no discernible intention of handing in their scripts on anything remotely resembling a deadline. Heaven forfend anyone suggest that Marvel's scheduling department appears to consist of six monkeys and a dartboard, and that the company persistently announces comics on schedules that it knows full well will never be achieved. Dear me, no. It's all because the unexpected continues to occur with clockwork regularity, and Marvel care so terribly much about quality.

Well, if Marvel truly care that much about quality, why are they shipping comics with 23 pages of adverts in 22 story pages, something that they've previously acknowledged is unacceptably damaging to the product? Why didn't they keep to their word and put the adverts at the back of the book? Why didn't they just turn some of the adverts down? Come on, you're always telling us how you're willing to sacrifice short term profit when it comes to indulging your big name primadonnas! Where's the same effort when it comes to the adverts? You people do realise that at the end of the day, paying customers are supposed to read these bloody things?

I'm not a happy customer. I'm a seriously angry customer.

Of course, it could be worse. You could be reading Ant-Man #2. That book contains a 22 page story interpolated with 25 pages of adverts - and since that apparently isn't bad enough, they've chucked in the letter column to make it 26. So the adverts outnumber the story pages by 18%.

Look me in the eye, Joe, and tell me this is acceptable.

Oh, yeah, and the rest is him feeling WARSONG #3 is rubbish too. ;)

52 Week Twenty-Six (DC Comics): We're halfway through the 52 maxiseries, and so far it's been great. This issue has at least picked up a little (not by much). It's pretty cool to see the "You Are Wrong" show from the Creeper miniseries and I'm loving this liberal Bill O'Reily interpretation of Jack Ryder. We got some humor with the scientists reaction to a woman coming on board and the Sivana family. And the scene between Osiris and the aligator thing was, dare I say, cute. 3/5

The All-New Atom #5 (DC Comics): I don't give a damn about what people are saying, I'm loving this title. And the art is so much better now that Byrne is gone (he just wasn't fit for this title). The way Dwarfstar killed Ricky Robot was f**king awesome. I hoping that DC will stick with this title and someday, allow Ray Palmer to show up. 4/5

The Incredible Hulk #100 (Marvel Comics): The Allegiance section of the Planet Hulk story line starts up. Planet Hulk has been great, this issue was great, but it feels like it's now setting up for World War Hulk (especially with the Planet Cho story, which I enjoyed a tad bit more than this issue's Planet Hulk story). When Hulk comes back, it appears that he's going to have people on his side (like Cho) when he comes back 4/5

Outsiders #42 (DC Comics): I like that the Outsiders have regained their competency and are bascially the new Justice League Elite (whatever happened to them anyways). I really hate Katana's new costume, but this title feels like it's laking something. What this title needs is for Nightwing to leave (and reform the Titans) and have Black Lightining and Dr. Light rejoin the team 3/5

Uncanny X-Men #480 (Marvel Comics): This Vulcan-centric issue was much better than the last one, though I'd rather see more of the X-Men in an issue of Uncanny X-Men. The art has improved too, over the last Vulcan issue. It was cool to see Vulcan kick some ass even though he ended up with the cliched scar across the eye. And I hope that Brubaker continues exploring on Vulcan's psychology 5/5

Pick of the Week
Justice League of America #3 (DC Comics): Despite this title lacking some rather necesesary Leaguers (the Martian Manhunter, the Flash, Zatanna, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Firestorm, and the Atom), Justice League of America is kicking ass. The "Rainbow Tornado Squad" was rather cool and I'm liking that the arc that is reestablishing the Justice League is focusing on the Red Tornado instead of characters that have their own monthlies (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern) or the ones that plain suck ass (Vixen). I don't think that any of us who have read this issue will forget the awesome ass shot of Black Canary! Though at this rate, the new Justice League will form with the members Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman want, by issue #14. 5/5

Superman Confidential #1

The best book I bought this week, though that introduction was a puzzling choice, to me. Does this kryptonite have a brain? Or was that some prose suggesting itself from the kryptonite's point of view. I don't know. Hopefully the kryptonite can't think. Because that would be lame. Otherwise, Cooke and Sale put that great little retro feel into this book, which is why everyone is buying this book anyway. Superman's beginning, when basked in the warm rays of the thematic past (cell phones aside), is far and away the most interesting period of the character, from a storytelling perspective. It's why people watch the movies and buy Man of Steel/Birthright trades, and it's why this book is selling also. Writing's good, art's gorgeous--the only thing Sale does better than drawing Superman saving Metropolis (or Kansas) daytime is letting his Batman stalk the shadows of Gotham. You guys should totally buy this. Really, drop either main Superman book if you have to, 'cause this is the best one.

Hmmm. Looks like I may have to pick this book up. I was a little unsure as to whether or not I should check out the Superman one. I'll give it a shot. I'm definitely getting Batman Confidential though.

This was an all right week of comics. I was a little disappointed in 52 this week. Did anybody else see that Zero Hour reference in there? The kids were messing with time travel and Waverider popped up. I thought that was interesting. I don't know if it was an homage to it or if it will play into the story later on.

Detective Comics was mediocre. It was a fill in team for Dini but wasn't a terrible story, it at least carried on the one-shot Batman tales. Dr. Phosphorus is back, well...back in Arkham now. Way to go Batman, foiled another villains plans.

Criminal # 2 was a really good read. This definitely showed me what this series is going to be about, for the most part. Nice twist by Brubaker. I'm really digging the character of Leo. I highly recommend this book to all, check it out, it's worth your time.

She-Hulk # 13 was a solid read and a nice little conclusion to the story arc. I don't know about the rest of the She-Hulk fans but I'm really enjoying the current artist on the title and I'm glad that he's around for the long haul. The most interesting part to me was Pug's ingestion of the potion and wishing that he didn't feel the way he did for Jen. Should be interesting in the pages of She-Hulk with those two.

Nightwing # 126 was another solid issue by the team of Wolfman and Jurgens. There is an assassin going around killing doctors and scientists involved with the heist of a super powered suit, and the guy is using a key chain laser pointer to kill them. And now, since Nightwing has involved himself, there is a two million dollar hit on his head.

Freshman II # 1 was pretty good. It was a lot better than I was expecting. Really fun issue and if you enjoyed the first series of Freshman I'd highly recommend checking out the second volume. Nice funny moments and a good movement of the ongoing plot with Wannabe trying his best to fit in, even though he's the only one without the powers.

What exactly are you saying? That Dinah and Hal are 'unneed'? 'Lose ends'? "FILLER' EVEN?!?!?!

You just made a dangerous enemy.....

No one disses Dinah like that and then demeans her by mentioning only her rear. :cmad:

I still said it before you. :oldrazz:

Sorry..just a little proud of that..:csad:

Wow....this was a fantastic week for comics....and, I still am not caught up yet.

Agents Of Atlas #4: Just a couple years ago, a miniseries like this would have been a complete waste of money. Little thought and time would have gone in it...but, lately, Marvel has been doing some really good stuff. This is one of them. I'm not a big fan of re-introducing the real old-time characters, like they tried with New Invaders; but, I'm hooked on every character in this book. It just seems like Marvel keeps surprising me with how much better they've gotten. 8/10

Ant-Man #2: This is definitely my Book Of The Week. The main character is just such a slime-ball...that to have Marvel give one of their long standing characters to such a jerk is simpy genius. Of course, the origin continues in this story, and by the last page, the readers mouth is practically open with such shock at Ant-Man's actions. In fact, when I went into a comic book store this weekend in Tacoma, the word was being spread that this is a book to get if you are a comic fan. 10/10

Avengers Next #1: Something about Amazing Spider-Girl #1 didn't have the same feel to me as the previous series...I'm hoping they are just trying to restart it for new fans and it will pick up; but, with Avengers Next, I felt like I was revisiting an old friend. I loved the first issue, I'm really glad they are expanding Spider-Girl's universe by bringing in another comic to coincide with it, and even more happy they aren't over-doing it with too many new books. If they let it grow, like the Ultimate line did by just starting slow with their two books, maybe it can start to catch on past it's rabid fans. This issue had what I expect from a Spider-Girl book: humor, drama, and action...all blended well together. 9/10

Beyond #5: Another great miniseries from Marvel....and, another great, unexpected ending to another issue. I guess if you aren't getting Beyond after everyone's constant praise, you're just not going to pick it up. (Or, you're waiting for the trade.) So many comics this week could have been the Book of the Week..this included. It's clear, all the Marvel naysayers on The Hype aren't reading what Marvel has been putting out lately. 10/10

Criminal #2: This is a good title...but, I guess I've been reading a few books like this; so, I'm not up to singing it's praises. If all the rest of the books this week hadn't been so good, I might have reviewed it better. In the end, it's solid, but that's all I can say. 8/10

Fantastic Four - The End #1: Wow! If the first issue can be any indication, this might end up being the best "The End" title to come out. (I know, many haven't been too thrilled with them, anyway. But, this one really had me from the first couple pages.) I loved the art, loved the story, and thought they really shoved quite a bit into this first issue. I can't wait for issue #2. My only complaint is that this issue had more ad pages than actual story. I think I remember counting 22 pages of comic to 25 pages of ads. It feels think, like it's double-sized...but, Marvel must really be raking in the ad money lately. 10/10

Red Prophet #1: Marvel's aquisition of Dabel Bros. has me so excited. This book is fantastic!!! Another contender for Book of the Week, I never would have bought it originally if Marvel didn't aquire these books. It's unlike anything you'll read from Marvel; and, this single issue that totally focuses on schooling the young Alvin in his powers just had me being thankful I had the chance to read it. This is not a book for everyone, and I think many would read issue #1 and pass on it. But, it's definitely a book for the intelligent comic reader. 10/10

Yeah, ANT-MAN, BEYOND! and AGENTS OF ATLAS all rock. Naturally no matter the bungles of the current EIC with some big decisions, there are always good Marvel books to be had if you look for them. I will say that this year has seen some A and B listers mishandled, warped, stretched thin, overreact and/or act entirely out of character, but Marvel has also gotten a handle with some lessor characters. MOON KNIGHT is moving up despite lateness, GHOST RIDER is back, and there are other good titles and relaunches to be had.

Agents of Atlas has totally surprised me. Such a great book.

Agents of Atlas,Batman Year 100 and American Way are my top trade wants for early next year.
