I know there has to be a thread on this somewhere, but it's probably in the Thor or Guardians of the Galaxy forum. I just wanted to get thoughts on the gems in this universe.

So the Infinity Gauntlet is in Asgard and appears to have the gems in it, but I've heard others say that the Tesseract, the Aether and the Orb are Infinity Stones, so what gives? I haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy, so maybe it's explained in there, but what do we know so far?

If the Tesseract is a gem, it's obviously the space gem since it can open dimensional holes and transport beings throughout the universe (Red Skull, Loki, Loki's aliens). But why then is it being used to zap people into oblivion in The First Avenger and being used to arm weapons for Shield in the Avengers? That seems more like the power gem to me.

The Aether seems to have the ability to alter reality, so is it the reality gem? Malekith was using it to merge worlds (wasn't he?) in the Dark World. I guess this could also be the power gem, but they can't all be.

I have no idea what the orb does yet, but I'm guessing it has to do with time since the original Guardians were from the future. Again, I haven't seen the new movie, so I don't know how much they have managed to change/ruin the comics yet.

Sorry if I'm late to the party, and if there's a good thread on this, feel free to direct me to that to answer these questions. I just thought it would be fitting to discuss it here since the gems will play a role in countless movies.

I can't address most of the gem comments with anything but poorly-informed speculation. I'm not even sure how closely the "Stones" in the film will adhere to the similarly-themed gems from the comics. But I believe Feige has said in an interview that the Tesseract is indeed the Space Gem.

As for how the Tesseract can power things; well opening portals takes a lot of power. I personally like to think of it like a car engine. It's primary purpose is transportation, but that doesn't mean you can't use it to power headlights, AC, and a radio, even if you don't know how to drive. But that's just my theory.

I've also heard that there's some level of gem-related exposition in Guardians of the Galaxy, so I'll hold further comments until I've seen it (on Sunday).

I like that description and I can buy it if that's the route they do go. I just really don't want to see this gem thing get all screwed up (regarding the unique powers of each) due to poor planning. Marvel has been praised for having great vision, but I honestly haven't seen a ton of evidence of that. I mean, why would you end Thor with him having no way back to Earth and Jane only to instantly bring him back when he's needed in the Avengers? Obviously we knew he would get back, but I wanted to see them actually put in some work to bring him back - not simply because "Odin used some dark magic." Without proper planning, I fear the gems will become very generic. I'm guessing we'll tune in to Guardians and see this orb being used very generically to destroy whatever its user wishes.

there is really no excuse for not using the search function of this forum: http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?p=27125677#poststop

Also no excuse for being harsh on a newbie to the boards. You could've just posted the link.
of course I could, but over the last few months I noticed that people got very lazy with the search function (more than usual. people TRIED to find threads before starting new ones in the old days. nowadays they even admit that threads might exist but start new ones anyway it is a pattern I noticed and absolutely hate) and also, I didn't intend to sound harsh

To be fair, you often need to have a pretty good sense of exactly what you're looking for to use search, and unless you're very specific with search criteria, you often end up having to sort through dozens of false positives.

What gets me is that, as far I can tell, the "Marvel Films" forum index is only showing two pages-worth of the most-recent threads for some reason. That only goes back less than a month! I remember several conversations that are older than that, which might be interesting to revisit now, but which are no longer indexed in those two pages, and for which I don't specifically remember the names. Why can't it just display all the conversations and let me browse them!? :argh:

EDIT: Nevermind!!! Serious case of PEBKAC going on here. Somehow the drop-down at the bottom of this forum (which I don't recall ever noticing before now) had gotten set to only show threads from "Last Month". Just fixed it, and we're good to go!
:D

EDIT 2: Except that the setting keeps reverting back to "Last Month" when I refresh the page. Is there a way to get the setting to persist, or get a mod to change the forum default? Other forums on here (GotG, AoU, AntMan) have "From the Beginning" set by default. Seems like this forum should as well.

the Collector's collection got blown up
