Joseph Gilgun has been my go to actor to play The Joker ever since he was in Lockout.

I just remembered Todd Phillips did that GG Allin documentary. He's got a lot of cred in the punk community for that.

For some reason I totally support him for this movie. He shouldn't be judged by Hangover. He's way more than that. I think Todd Phillips and Scorsese is a brilliant pairing

I'd be lying if I said I weren't intrigued by how the film turns out, in visual style, tone, and who will be cast as a younger Joker!

I'm starting to picture Jonah Hill as Joker and it would be interested in seeing if he could pull it off, based on handling drama and comedy well.

Joker is getting old, recycled too much and there does NOT need to be a origin film for the character since they did it few times already such as Batman movie, Suicide Squad, some animated. Joker is great character but it's getting tiresome using it all the time.

All the time? You can literally count on your fingers the amount of times he's been used in live action on one hand. Batman Returns featured Catwoman and Penguin, Batman Forever had Riddler and Two-Face, Batman & Robin had Mr. Freeze, Bane and Poison Ivy and Batman Begins & The Dark Knight Rises had Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow, Bane and Talia al Ghul respectively.

It's not as if the Joker is the driving force of every single Batman movie, and he may not even be the main villain of the upcoming film. So I'm kind of failing to see how he's being recycled too much.

Maybe he doesn't need an origin movie, but the Joker definitely isn't over-saturated. At least not currently.

Well Joker is oversaturated in the comics right now but then so is Ra's al Ghul.

I didn't say every movie, I said a lot of them from live action to animated but NOT every one of them he has been used. If they can't make another villain it's so easy to say use joker as villain. He was used in:

Young Justice episodes
Brave and the Bold
Flashpoint Paradox as Martha Wayne
The Batman series
Lego movie
Arkham Origins video game series
Injustice 1 and 2 video game
Under the red hood movie
Batman series 1965
Dark Knights Returns pt 1 and 2
Batman 1989 movie
The Dark Knight
Suicide Squad
Gotham series using Jerome
The Killing Joke animated movie
Assault on Arkham movie
Batman Beyond Return of Joker
Justice League War
JLA New Fronter movie
Batman Bad Blood
Batman The movie 1966
Batman Adventures 1968-69
New Batman Adventures 1977
Scooby Doo 1972
Super powers team 1985-86
Mask of the Phantasm movie 1993
New Batman Adventures 1997-99
World's Finest movie
Justice League animated 2000-06
Static Shock
Batman vs Dracula movie
Son of Batman movie
Crisis on infinite Earth as Jester
Batman Unlimited movie
Gotham city breakout
Return of caped Crusaders

There's more too...

I remember 8-9 years ago that Brett Ratner expressed interest in doing a movie about the Joker.

Thank God he's not directing this!!

"One of the centerpieces of this new, decentralized strategy is an as-yet-unnamed side label of occasional movies that are completely separate from everything else, set entirely outside the cinematic universe. Total stand-alones based on good ideas from big-name filmmakers. Movies that are just movies, not components of a larger piece of clockwork. The first one they’re talking about is a solo outing about supervillain the Joker, set to be directed and co-written by The Hangover and War Dogs alumnus Todd Phillips. Johns says they’ll be announcing the name of of this side label “soon-ish.”

Nothing new, except those reports are true about the film and starting a new set of movies set outside the DCEU.

Johns confirming the side-label thing is pretty cool. I want these movies to just be movies.

Nice to get some confirmation on this. Love that bit about 'big-name directors. Take this seriously and aim for the stars, Warner Bros.

I also love that WB/DC will be making movies which will more of a standalone offerings (DCEU & the new label). I always wanted that. Glad to see WB/DC are thinking the same with their future endeavors.

Perfection :hoboj:

The interesting thing is the 3 on-screen Jokers were sort of cast against type or at least not obvious picks.

Nicholson, Ledger and Leto weren't obvious actors to play the Joker.

So I'm hesitant to go along with the fan choices for Joker who tend to be guys who just happen to look somewhat like the comic book Joker.

I'm actually quite excited about this project. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

The project must have been developing for 3-6 months if it it's moving this fast. Just the thought of 80's Gotham visually inspired by Scorsese has me excited!

I know people have said being a producer doesn't mean much, but if the origin movie really takes inspiration from his films, then Phillips could go to the man for guidance. Then again, he's said to be very early stages in the project. Hopefully, he signs on to produce.

Nicholson was a little old but beyond that he was a "duh" pick. His mannerisms, his crazy roles, his laugh, his eyebrows. He screamed Joker.

Also Leto was quite obvious with his personality. On the paper made more sense than Gosling.

Gonna stop ya right there, cause I'd say Jack's role in The Shining pretty much solidified his future casting as Joker. His personality is just straight up Joker.

Plus, Michael Uslan saw Nicholson as Joker when The Shining was released in 1980.

Yeah I knew my Jack comment was gonna be brought up.

If Batman '89 had come out a decade earlier or around his The Shinning era for sure but by the time he did play The Joker he was a portly 50 year old.

Physically he didn't embody comic Joker when he did get the role. They also played his age into the role by making him the killer of Bruce's parents.
