"The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached?

Oh yeah, I’m sure Matt Reeves would be distraught at the idea of having Joaquin Phoenix to call on should he want include The Joker in his movies going forward. :whatever:

There’s no way WB - even with their levels of stupidity - would allow two competing cinematic universes on screen at the same time. It’d utterly confuse the audience. Two high profile actors as The Joker at the same time just isn’t happening.

Every high profile announcement about seperate D.C. movie projects like this, puts another potential nail in the DCEU coffin.

No, but you are assuming as much. If they asked Reeves about it then sure. I always felt like he wouldn't use Leto's version anyway, but that does not mean he would use Phoenix, but again, all assumption.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up until they start filming. I've been burned too many times before.

Joaquin doing a franchise would be unexpected, which is why a one film type deal would make sense. We shall see.

Isn't this set in 80s Gotham? So ya'll would want your new Batman set there as well? Eh, I don't know about that.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get some other rogues in this movie.

I'd love to see Penguin and Riddler in this.

It's most likely a one and done movie. It's the reason why Phoenix turned down so many CBM roles because he doesn't like being in a Franchise.

You don’t get in deep negotiations unless you were open to it. I’d pin it down to creative differences more than the franchise deal at this point.

Ok, that would be pretty cool.

I like that with this rumor it's suddenly not an unnecessary project around the internet.

I certainly don’t think it’s an empty assumption to say that WB are not going to progress with two completely seperate narratives for their principle characters.

This news of a potential Phoenix led Joker film makes the already shaky DCEU foundation even shakier.

You’re right to say that I’m assuming a Phoenix Joker could appear in a Reeves Batman movie, but it could certainly be something that could happen. More likely than a Leto Joker, in my opinion.

I'm simply going by the words from Kroll, the same guy who just broke this news.

Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in “Suicide Squad” as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto’s character in future DC films.

Yes, well, WB haven’t exactly been honest or clear with a lot of their announcements, so...

Honestly, I don't think it's so much that Phoenix is against sequels outright. I think it's more that he doesn't like the idea of signing onto multiple films sight unseen. You sign on to a trilogy upfront, you're likely not going to have scripts for the second and third films available to help inform your decision. What happens if you sign on and the sequel scripts end up being trash? Yeah, you're stuck. I think that might be his issue. He'd be signing months of his life away on a gamble.

He might be more receptive to reappearing as the character in multiple films on a case-by-case basis (i.e. if the scripts are right).

I don't care if Spielberg is involved. The idea of having competing Jokers going around is ridiculous and damaging to the brand.

How are they competing, exactly?

They are competing for audience investment. The biggest problem with the DC film slate right now is that the audience is not invested in the series, there's no consistency across the films. Adding in a separate Joker that may end up being more popular that Leto is going to cause all sorts of problems from a marketing perspective, and the issue is going to be far worsened if Matt Reeves' Batman movie is set in the same universe. Suddenly he might be stuck with a version of the Joker that people don't like. An audience can't invest in a brand if there's no consistency. This is why it's a bad idea.

Except that a lot of people already don't seem to like Leto's Joker, so that seems like a moot point. If anything, a good take on The Joker's origins, an attempt to humanize him a bit could win them back to the brand.

Also, if the brand itself (The Joker) sort of relies on inconsistency (The Joker having multiple origins, takes, reinventions, and being generally unpredictable), couldn't they invest in that anyway?

Which brand is that then? The DCEU? Or the alt DC film brand that this movie is part of?

There’s your problem. There isn’t one brand. It’s confusing, stupid and won’t appeal to the audience at all.

DC need to sort their **** out, and gain a bit of focus. Otherwise this terrible run will continue.

**** it. Bring on the brand confusion.

Leto’s ‘performance’ in suicide squad was ridiculous and embarrassing enough to the brand, itself

At this point, I am so down for this. Scrap the cinematic universe for all I care. Just give me the best movies with the best talent possible. I’ve seen all the downsides of connecting everything.

That's exactly the problem. You can't build a brand and support if you releasing multiple versions of the same thing. It's the reason Apple computers nearly went under 25 years ago. It took Steven Jobs coming back, cleaning the slate and focusing on a few core products to turn the company around. It's the same reason why Marvel have become the behemoth they have, they've kept it simple and easy to follow. Consistency builds loyalty. Good will only gets you so far as shown by Justice League under-performing severally.
